Matrix Games and 2by3 Games have today announced that they are working on an epic turn-based World War II strategy game for the PC. Gary Grigsby's World at War, which is scheduled for release later this year, will challenge players to alter the course of history while commanding the forces of Germany, Japan, China, the Soviet Union, or the Western Allies.

"Everyone knows how World War II turned out, but most wargames don't allow you to truly explore it as a global conflict," said David Heath, director of operations at Matrix Games. "Gary Grigsby's World at War removes those limits and gives wargamers an intelligent, historical system that pulls no punches."

Gary Grigsby's World at War will feature four full-length scenarios spanning the years between spring 1940 and summer 1943 and will be played on a world map divided into around 350 areas. In addition to solo play, Gary Grigsby's World at War will feature support for up to five players via e-mail. Each of the five playable forces in the game will have approximately 15 different combat units as well as infrastructure and supply units, each with up to 14 attributes that can be improved through research and development.

"We've wanted to do a full World War II game for some time," said Joel Billings of 2by3 Games. "We've designed Gary Grigsby's World at War to provide our trademark historical depth and accuracy as well as the fun and playability that comes with the grand strategy scale."

We'll bring you more information on Gary Grigsby's World at War as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, you might be interested to take a look at the game's official Web site.
