GameStop: Wii U needs blockbuster to spark sales

CFO Rob Lloyd says Wii U not performing on pace with original Wii "for a variety of reasons," one being a lack of major first-party titles.

The Wii U has failed to match the sales pace of its original Wii predecessor for a "variety" of reasons, GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd said today, noting that a lack of major first-party titles is just one of the factors.

Speaking during the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference this afternoon, the executive said the Wii U launch went off as predicted, but interest in the new console has since fallen off.

"We were pleased with the allocation [of Wii U units] that we got through the launch. I think for us, it performed at expectation," Lloyd said. "I think what you're [now] seeing is the interest has not been to the overall level that [Nintendo] had hoped for. And it's not performing like the Wii did."

"There are a variety of theories as to why that might be," he added. "But among them is there hasn't been the blockbuster from Nintendo. So Nintendo I think understands the need to have that first-party software available to drive Wii U sales."

Nintendo has officially sold 3 million Wii U hardware units and 11 million software copies across the world since launch last year.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata last month apologized for a lack of Wii U software available. He explained that Nintendo understands the need for new titles surrounding the Wii U launch, but also acknowledged that achieving quality is of the utmost importance.

Significant first-party titles for the Wii U are on the way, including a brand-new Wii U Legend of Zelda game and a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker high-definition remake. Other Nintendo-produced Wii U titles revealed recently include new Yoshi, Mario, and Mario Kart offerings.

Sometimes (a lot of times) I wonder what Nintendo is trying to do to itself.

Everyone thinks this is a console problem but I think we may see jaws drop when the PS4 and Xbox 720 don't sell.  Tough economies around the world with people making lower and lower wages cuz companies are outsourcing jobs to people under rule by corrupt governments means less people having money and those people are choosing much of the time now to game on tablets which heck you can find many free versions of games and very cheap games too and the cost of a tablet is far less than a pc or gaming console.  I honestly think console gaming is in big trouble.

Nintendo games are good, but their consoles are way outdated at release. For example, the Wii U is only slighty better then PS3 & Xbox 360. Yet we can look at PS4 specs and see it is light years ahead of current consoles with a 8 core 64 bit cpu and 8 gig of GDDR5 ram. Why does Nintendo insist on being behind the times with their hardware in consoles?? If Nintendo Wii U had the same specs as PS4 then I wouldn't have to even buy the PS4. Then I would have more cash for Wii U accessories and games.. I have no problem dropping 600 - 800 bucks on a Nintendo console if the specs are high end and its cleary worth it. Plus Nintendo fails to see the need for Bluetooth which in todays time is a must have on any console.

So there is a chance that Bungie's next project (Destiny) may come to WiiU.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/02/turns_out_destiny_could_be_coming_to_the_wii_u_after_all

The WiiU is listed in the game's source code.

Also during the documentary video about the game they make a quote "My Body is Ready" Anyone who is a Nintendo fan knows this statement is associated with Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils Aime.

Also WiiU owners may see Watchdogs come to the system. As it was listed for preoorder on Gamestop's website.

I kinda want nintendo to drop out of the console market and make 3rd party games for other consoles. They should still stay in the handheld market but I think it would be better for everybody if they did that.

It's better for nintendo because they would probably earn more money from all the software sales on the ps360 or ps4 and 720.

It would be better for sony and micosoft because they get more third party support.

It would be better for sony and microsoft fans because they get nintendo games without having to own a nintendo conosle.

It's better for nintendo fans because they only care about games. Having nintendo games on other consoles let's them have good graphics, online, and game all in one.

A developer with brains and balls can really turn this around, making a profit and a big name for themselves. Too bad developers these days have their brains on safe mode and their balls in their publishers' purses...

28th November ? December in Japan. Avg... December... So I think, this year will be great for wii u, next year is the year of other consoles. Probably I'm gonna buy next xbox generation. I like both franchises. But on the other hand, next Xbox/ps generation will be more expensive so, these consoles probably will not do the same sells was the previous generation.

Sry for my English I'm from Argentina, but I hope you can understand me. I'm not a fanboy, but if new consoles have so much hardware, the cost will be high... Probably 600,in my country 2000 dollars (wii u costs 900 dollars) but I bought it in USA.

There is no market for the wii u outside of japan, where Mario is worshipped as a god.

Casual gamers have moved on to tablet and smart phone games. Hardcore gamers won't go near anything made by nintendo. Soccer moms refuse to dish out 500 bucks for casual gaming...not to mention keeping up with all the system and web maintenance/updates.

Casual gamers are too fickle to support something in the long term.

3 Million in not quite 3 months isn't that bad.  BUT!  WHERE IS METROID & CASTLEVANIA IN THE RELEASE SCHEDULE?

Not to mention, once a game goes gold they should be available for download the next day!

Only 3 million Wii U consoles? No wonder Ubisoft wanted to move a previously Wii U exclusive 2D platformer like Rayman Legends to multi-platform. I understand their business reason, even if it sucks with the delay for the Wii U version that was done.

I'm just bored of seeing the same old games we always see try to make me buy a Nintendo console, I'd rather wait for the other two

chuckratm1

Nothing can save the WiiU because a majority of the people who bought a Wii and made it successful aren't gamers and could care less about a new console that will be outclassed in about 9 months when PS4 and Xbox 720 arrive.

I have to agree with the article, the WiiU just isnt showing its worth yet at if at all.

The launch games were terribly weak with most of them being ports of older games, some of which run worse than their older counterparts (Batman-framerate)

Don't get me wrong I love Nintendo and in recent years have invested alot of time and money into the Wii, one game in particular Xenoblade chronicles has swallowed hundreds of hours of my time.

All im seeing is Mario/Yoshi/Zelda sequals and remakes, i'm tired of these, they do not win new fans they just keep existing fans happy.

Nintendo really needs to come up with some more adult related franchises.

Until then I will be keeping the WIIU at arms length and wait until the other 2 decide to release their consoles, maybe then Nintendo will show their quality. if they dont then my money will be going to one of the others.

I thought Blockbuster went out of business years ago.  Strange that Nintendo would be relying on them.  Talk about a bad business decision...

Why are all gaming sites so biased against Nintendo?

Oh wait yes, blackbuster now are mostly FPS,  something Nintendo doesn't make

Not but seriosuly, 4 months and everyone is just declaring this dead, while the Vita sells less than the PSP, and the PS3 did not produce black numbers until 2 years ago or so.

I'm buying this for Monster Hunter next month and Pikmin 3, those are my mayor blockbuster titles, not to mention we have Smash Bros coming.

martindosantos

We have to wait. The console arrived on December... and everybody says the console is bad. Patience... Every new console needs time. When PS3 launched, there wasnt good games and there were 3 games...

I think vita needs good games NOW!

I'm definitely not sold on the console yet, and the 30th Zelda title in the series or another weak Mario clone are probably not going to convince me.

What it needs is POKeMON U  a full pokemon game on the wii U. Full 3D RPG like the handhelds with 1080P and use the pad to manage items, flick out pokeballs, use the mic to give voice commands to your pokemon, and full online coop. Team up with friends to go through the story together and help each other. That will boost sales for shure.

Oh don't worry GameStop! Wait just a little more and you'll see those blockbusters you want at E3!

Ironic how this "so called blockbuster" that supposedly would help Wii U used, USED to be Mario, Zelda etc.

I'd like to see some new stuff- not re-hashed work on really old franchises.

Not interested in another Zelda or Smash Bros etc - new stuff please.

If Nintendo can't come up with something new and inspiring, then they are going to be in a world of hurt.

You know Gamestop if I were you I'd be more worry about that rumored tech that's going to make the next Playstation and Xbox block playing used games which will essentially kill your business model.  If that happens given you barely sell PC games, your store is going to consist of WiiU and 3DS games (as well as old last gen games).

ChunkyDrawers
ChunkyDrawers

How about firing the entire team and ask real gamers around the world through surveys or something on what they want to see in a console and games. Make an actual console that will compete with the other big two.

Remember Microsoft teams actually going to gamers homes to hear them out and observe before the first Xbox? That's what Nintendo needs to do.

xgalacticax

If I had a nickel for every time someone doubted Nintendo.... I found it funny the other day when I was teaching a class on game design; and just before the class these youngsters were talking about how they were all going to get a Wii U once the big games came out - people seemed particularly interested in Monster Hunter, Lego City and the expected 3D Mario game. We'll see how it performs then.

I think this is the first time Nintendo fully develop HD games. Let's see how well will they push up this challenge.

Consoles is supposedly selling a hardware not a software,,

specifically for the PS3, PS4, and Wii U, people much more interested with their games, but not the platform, that's the big huge warning sign.. if those are my Company, I'll be crazy right now.

I'm sure when I speak for all Nintendo fans that we need an Open world Pokemon game to REALLY get more interest in the WiiU. Smash Brothers alone would garner the most interest. Time to start pumping out your staples Nintendo or even your fanboys (Including me) will be moving on to bigger and brighter things.

The games that need to come out to 'spark' people to buy a Nintendo Wii U are:

The Legend of Zelda,

Mario Kart,

Smash Bros.

Donkey Kong

Kirby

Hopefully not far away!

To be fair, the Wii made a major (MAJOR) change to the gaming industry with motion control. Wii U is better in the sense that it's better looking and has more stuff to play around with, but it's not doing anything brand new. Not selling as much as the Wii did outright is understandable, and I don't understand why he's making a big deal out of nothing.

gamestop needs a block buster to keep those stores open.
