GameStop managers get PS4, Xbox One

[UPDATE] Retailer confirms all store managers will receive next-generation consoles and games for free at launch this holiday season.

[UPDATE] Neowin has confirmed with a GameStop representative that all store managers will also receive an Xbox One at launch. No mention was made of any free games.

The original story is below.

All GameStop managers will receive a PlayStation 4 unit and seven games at launch, the retailer confirmed with Joystiq, after an original announcement at the GameStop Expo today in Las Vegas.

Games gifted to GameStop managers are Killzone: Shadow Fall, NBA 2K14, Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, Need for Speed: Rivals, Battlefield 4, and PlayStation 3 game Beyond: Two Souls.

A GameStop spokesperson told Joystiq, "Beyond is for PS3, all others are for PS4. Some are physical and some are digital vouchers."

To prepare its employees for the impending arrival of the Xbox One and PS4, GameStop president Tony Bartel said last week that the company's 4,400 store managers in the United States will receive hands-on training with both platforms.

"We will continue to be the most knowledgeable source for buying a new console and related games and accessories," Bartel said.

The Xbox One and PS4 will launch in November. It is not clear if GameStop managers will also receive an Xbox One and games.

The one single perk that every GS store manager has been holding out for! That ought to make up for how shitty the rest of their job likely is.

Its like a giant orgy of all things I hate with gaming industry.

The managers don't really do anything besides hire and fire. When I worked there our manager didn't show up unless there was a extremely crazy customer.

Managers? why not every sales person? WTF?

This is to reward them for talking your head off and shoving all that crap down your throat that you don't want when you want to just zip in and out of the store to buy Call of Booty 27.

What about the employees who also sell the consoles? No training for them?

Customer: ''Excuse me, what can you tell me of this console?''

GS employee: ''Hang on, let me get my manager''

Customer 2: ''Excuse me, what can you tell me of this console?''

GS employee: ''Hang on, let me get my manager''

Customer 3: ''Excuse me, what can you tell me of this console''

GS employee: ''Hang on, let me get my manager''

Another example of how unfair life can be. Not on the jealous side, but on the pissed off side.

DAM! I shouldve stayed at the gamestop i work. I probably wouldve been GM before the next gen consoles hit. FUCK IT !O WELL!

Love my friends at Gamestop, but most managers could afford a console. At least those that don't have kids and family and live alone. Only manager I know that had kids had to leave for somewhere else with better pay. I agree this would be better for charity. Again, they did not need this perk last gen.

KliCks83

New thought. They should be required to prove they own the console a year later. If they turn around and sell it how can they be training on it, as is the stated purpose of giving them the consoles. I know many manager friends at GameStop who are obnoxiously PC only fanboys. A training class for all employees and a free lunch seems better for training purposes.

Yeah but if those consoles didn't sell well they will return there and bashed those consoles to their heads

Unless Gamespot is paying the unnecessary service fees for XBL and PSN, they're actually going to be costing their employees money by doing this.

Why do people keep assuming that Sony and Microsoft are giving away these consoles and that it's GameStop itself that is doing this?

So, only the store managers? That's messed up. You know how the teacher always said if you didn't bring enough for the whole class......

One of the few GOOD perks to being in GameStop. Problem is if you aren't a manager you get crap. I left the company as an SGA and have been much happier since. Still, good for the managers, I hope they enjoy it :).

Lost-to-Apathy
Lost-to-Apathy

Most of their managers aren't even gamers. They just work there. They'll probably just sell those stupid consoles, and good for them. There will probably be a shortage of consoles, and I'm sure plenty of idiots out there are willing to pay twice the amount for a PS4 or XONE.

YukoAsho
YukoAsho

@megakick To be fair, that's a LOT of Xbones and PS4s that would have to be given away.

YukoAsho
YukoAsho

@VolcanoMan001 You need to find another GameStop.  The multiple ones I go to ask me ONCE if I'd like to pre-order or buy the protection plan.  The one lady who did go aggressive apologized when I pointed out that she was being overbearing, and that was some time ago in a dying mall.

stryfeforlife
stryfeforlife

@skunkpants Actually, I would say the Store Manager would then to their job, relaying their experience to those whom they MANAGE. As a retail store manager, I can tell you many companies do incentive gifting like this to further invoke and promote desire for product knowledge, and a good store manager will take what they have learned and train their staff, or just have casual conversations about it, whatever the situation may call for

tightwad34

@KliCks83 Just out of curiosity, how much do the managers make? I can't see them making bank, I mean you're only managing a video game store after all.

@KliCks83 I work at Gamestop and know for a fact its a big nono for us to sell ANYTHING that the company gives us for free. A manager at my store got fired a couple years back for that very reason.

@NaturallyEvil They get Live and PSN memberships given to them by MS and Sony at the Expo. They really do get a lot of stuff, mostly just swag like shirts and cool little knickknacks but a few download codes for games and MS points etc.

@stryfeforlife We were all friends at the GS I worked at, my boss would come back from the Expo and we'd get together at her place and game it up and drink booze and learn about the new stuff she'd brought back. Good times all around.

KliCks83
KliCks83

@Isuma I know I'm sure. Just wondering how they will keep tabs on 8,000 consoles plus games. Seems like a lot of trouble. Like I said send all employees to a training and give 'em  lunch. I see bitterness in the non-manager positions in the future.
