GameStop holding public Expo in August

Retailer's inaugural gamer convention hitting San Antonio August 29 with unreleased titles from Microsoft, Sony, Activision; tickets start at $35.

GameStop will hold a one-day, open-to-the-public convention called GameStop Expo this August in San Antonio, Texas, the company announced today. Upcoming titles from Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Activision, and Electronic Arts will be on hand, and general admission tickets start at $35.

GameStop's Expo is open for five hours. Hopefully the lines are short!

GameStop Expo will be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 29, and unlike the firm's company-wide manager conference, this show will be open to PowerUp Rewards members.

A GameStop representative told GameSpot this afternoon that the GameStop Expo is open only to PowerUp Rewards members. That service is free to join.

Those looking for a premium experience can purchase a $100 VIP pass, which grants gamers access to four sessions with "some of the biggest names in gaming," as well as entry to the gaming lounge and special lines for signings.

Those interested in attending GameStop Expo can head to the event's website to register.

I think I'll pass. They will promote any game if they think it's going to sell well. I love their little videos they play in the store where their "game advisers" talk about upcoming games and how awesome they are. Sorry I've talked to some of the people that work there and really can't take any of their opinions seriously.

Make all the jokes you want, for those of us forced to live nearby, this is a dream come true. No offense to the people that live here (in this case), but if you aren't living directly on the East (i miss you...) or West (I liked you) coasts, the pickings are pretty slim when it comes to gaming events. Austin gets a few things every now and then (upcoming SF tourney), as well as Dallas and Houston, but that's about it.

The company can celebrate how it will be going the way of the CD shop and video store someday.

More and more that I know of are downloading digitally.  Why buy from a middle man?  Buy direct from the source I say.

Will I be able to preorder Battletoads there?

This is ridiculous. As a longtime employee of GameStop, I am disgusted by the way they are trying to turn a buck off of the yearly manager's conference. Glad I can leave the company soon and not planning to continue doing business with them anymore after I am no longer eligible for the discount.

This gaming convention just showcases a bunch of bad practices: only open to GameStop reward members, VIP passes that get you stuff that the regular ticket price should include, it's only one day, and OH YEAH... it's being put on by GameStop.  Pass.

Meh.  I have been to PAX Prime and East.  Besides, three days is three times better than one.

"Tickets start at $35" So uh...can't help but wonder if a scalper will sell me a slightly used ticket for $9 outside.

Wow, I wonder if this will be successful? Kinda neat, although I dislike the company. (long story told in other articles long ago)

I think the truth part is a bit wrong. The blogger needs to get his facts strait and not use rumors from managers who don't seem to know the facts.

On behalf of countless gamers, you suck. I'm just saying it because we no longer have the ability to thumbs down comments to express that. That is all.

There will always be retail boxes for something. The hardware still has to get sold too you know. I don't see complete DD for at least another 10-15yrs. If everything goes DD, gamers will expect a much cheaper price for the software since there won't be any retailer or distributor. Games should be close to 1/2 the price they are now. Those DD games that are full price on PSN and XBL are seriously overpriced. Sony and Microsoft push on Demand because they know they will make more money through DD.Why do you think XBL and PSN make such good profits for Microsoft and Sony.

$35 is ridiculous. Used to get into E3 free when I worked in the gaming industry. This seems like Gamespot way of making additional money. I'm sure they will be selling everything at this Expo. Bring your FAT wallets.
