GameStop: 'high degree' of confidence that PS4 will play used games

CEO Paul Raines says he's nearly certain new platform will play secondhand titles; retailer says Wii U has been disappointing.

During a post-earnings financial call today, GameStop CEO Paul Raines explained that he has met with various Sony executives and has a "high degree of confidence" that the PlayStation 4 will play used games.

Sony said in February at the PS4 announcement that the platform is capable of playing secondhand titles but that the decision to block or permit used games will ultimately be at the discretion of individual publishers.

Also during the call, GameStop executives spoke about the Wii U launch. The retailer said that though the launch in November "exceeded our expectations," sales have been "disappointing" since the beginning of the year. According to the company, there are two reasons the Wii U has fallen short.

First, GameStop claimed Wii U marketing has "not broken through the way that it needs to" thus far, noting that consumers are having a tough time understanding the system's features, namely the GamePad. "We still have an education process we need to go through," the company said.

The second reason the Wii U has come up short thus far is due to a lack of blockbuster, system-moving titles, GameStop said. Raines said New Super Mario Bros. U was a compelling first-party launch title, but a dearth of intriguing titles has kept system adoption low since.

"We're seeing the ramifications of that today," GameStop said.

Wii U sales will "take off" when blockbuster titles arrive, the company said. Nintendo is currently developing a new 3D Mario, a new Mario Kart title, two Zelda games, and a new Super Smash Bros. title.

Sony themselves has said blocking used titles will be up to publishers.  So go ahead and buy the PS4, but don't be surprised when you cannot buy major PS4 titles preowned.  The trend is to stop preowned titles around the industry.  Publishers are demanding it, and Microsoft and Sony are complying in their own ways.

Microsoft has come up with a way to handle preowned titles that publishers can live with.

Sony is leaving it up to publishers, who may just block preowned titles on PS4 with no way around it.

We know VERY little about the future of preowned games in this generation, but my guess is they may soon be a thing of the past for both consoles.

The Wii U hate is funny, considering that any game on that'll be worthwhile on the NextBox or the PS4 will also be on the PC and play better, leaving Nintendo with being the only console with exclusives worth a crap.

Blocking resale is an insult to players. They can make us pay for an online pass, I totally understand that, like some games already do, but removing the right to buy / sell games is the worst idea ever. I might just buy a PC instead if they do this.

Next gen consoles blocking used games would suck balls.

But at least it would put Gamestop out of business.  I would LOVE to see that.

When the majority of your business plan is based on re-selling used games would he say any different even if he knew the opposite were true?

Highly doubtful.

I would disagree that more "new" Mario centered games and more "new" Zelda titles will move systems. Nintendo needs to explore outside of Link and Mario. I know I'm not interested in a new Zelda or Mario game any where near enough to want to seriously consider purchasing a Wii U right now. Even if I was, I still don't care about using that silly tablet style controller. I am much more satisfied with a normal controller, and I don't believe I'm one of few that would agree with this.

Great! I'll buy a PS4 once used games for it will start appearing at my local Gamestop. No new Metroid? Nothing particularly new? Will Miyamoto-san go work for Sony? Zelda and Samus need to meet Cole McGrath.

????  No shit Gamestop. Sony stated that a while ago. Why you are unsure is a statement of ignorance that is astonishing. How does this company stay in business?

Want to sell the WiiU, Nintendo? Pump out another five Mario games, two Zelda games...and port Bayonetta 2 to all platforms if you don't want to be the joke of "next-gen."

Interesting that they would put that decision down to publishers discretion, now we get to see who the really greedy evil bastards are. My money is on EA being in that list.

nintendo: drop the price of the wii u by 100 bucks and bundle it with copies of MH3U.  people will buy your crappy console lol

I would be quite upset if used games were banned. Specifically because then my brother couldn't even use my games on his console then, and vice versa.

Instead of allowing or banning used games full stop... why not make it a timed ban... like a new game can't be re-sold within a 3 month period of registering it. That way support goes to the devs as they make their sales, while shops and customers can get the benefits of trading used games.

Banning all together will ruin dedicated retailers and that is not fair for them.

iono why people are complaining about used games being block. to me its a great idea for multiple reasons. maybe by doing that maybe games would be 10 dollars cheaper then the game that are right now.  these game publishers are losing money due to people being cheap and buying used games, lets be honest here new realeased games 69.99 and used new realease games 64.99 or maybe 59.99 cmon 10 dollar difference, if you cant afford another buck or two maybe you guys shouldnt be spening money on games and for the games that are under 20 dollar bins at gamestop lol cmon now u can get those games new for 9.99-24.99 at walmart or something. if you cant afford maybe you might want a career change. for trading in games shi*, they rip u off at gamestop

They are hoping they will but its more likely that they will at least need a online pass especially mp type games

sounds like a crock to me. sony is saying that so you still buy the ps4 blame it on the publishers then it's not sonys fault, since all the publishers will probably block used games if allowed.

I just got Wing Commander 4 (Now with DVD quality Cutscenes) , Dreamfall and World  in Conflict from GOG last night . You can't do that on next gen consoles because they are not backward compatible and as for used games , we'll have to wait and see .

"PS4 is capable of playing secondhand titles" .......... you should have said PS4 is cabable of blocking second hand titles not the other way around... and if you are giving the publishers the choice... well for 99% of all games will be blocked... it seems i will go with PC and Wii U next gen.

BushidoEffect3

@UponADarkThorne WRONG. Idiot doesn't know Sony exclusives very well.  Get a PS3 next time or at least look up their exclusives. GoW, Heavy Rain, Killzone, Uncharted, MGS4, Infamous, Gran Turismo.  PS4 exclusives will do the same. And they are worthwhile.

Yeah those are all on PC too!

@Feedbackula

The only issue with nowadays Nintendo is the lack of 3rd party support, which granted is a very serious issue.   That being said, most of the good third party games on the other systems are better on PC, which makes the upcoming  X-Box an the Playstation 4 very uninteresting to me.

YukoAsho

@Feedbackula Mario and Zelda games are a mixed bag.

On the one hand, they've pretty much reached who they're going to reach and will change exactly zero minds about Nintendo, especially with how conservative they are with those franchises.

On the other hand, new entries in beloved series will likely get fans to finally get off their duff and buy the console.  Now whether third parties provide games for the system or continue to discredit the Wii U is a mystery.  Nintendo needs to bring new content to the system to dispel the "mascot machine" label it has, but it needs those mascots in the short term to get some hardware out the door.

@iempire68 Look at EA and Bad Company (and many other games, this is just an example). The console doesn't stop you from playing used games, but if you buy it used then not only do you have to buy the game, but you have to spend another $10 on a new code so that you can play it online. This is why they say that the PS4 will play used games, but that doesn't mean that publishers won't find a way to stop it. If you buy a new release that's used for $50, you're going to spend another $10 to play online and may as well buy the game brand new since you're going to end up paying $60 anyway.

@stev69 For sure. EA will be the first. You know that's right. Probably followed closely by Activision. If they don't beat EA to the punch...

Man that hurts. When they kill your willingness to share and that helps to become more egoistic with your games, you figure out how bad it really sounds.

@CommonSense702

because used games are 100% profit.  gamestop makes like 1-2 bucks off of every game they sell and about 7-10 bucks off every console. they buy back COD BO2 from you for 30 bucks...sell it for 55-57 dollars....and make a major profit.  gamestop will just boycott ps4 when it comes out if it doesnt play used games.  they have over 60% market share....sony knows that.

Don't you miss the old retail system, when disk were part of your collection instead of discarding them because your CD key has been activated on, for examle, steam? We are not in better position thanks to drm, at all.

@Tripwolf I agree with graphics, but better controls and gameplay? What's the difference? Gameplay isn't changed, only the controller.

PC gamers, jeez. You'd think the entire world was about graphics.

@Tripwolf  RE6 has PC version and it's quick time event is the most stupid idea ever!In xbox360 version you press X and A at the same time to evade from death and what about PC version ? SPACE BAR AND R button in same TIME!

Why did they put them at that? because X is reload and A is for splinting in Controller layout! And sometime and in some game like Armored Core,They would love to let control stay with controller because it's better(because it's HARDER!).

@botroo3 The option was always there. This is not a change from current gen. What is the difference between a online pass or if they wanted too already just block the singleplayer all together like they do with on-disc dlc. Also, it's kinda odd whining about it and then say that you'll go PC for the next gen when blocking secondhand titles is 100% ihnerent for almost every game on PC.

Explodatron
Explodatron

@BushidoEffect3 It was easier for them to just say "exclusive" than it was for them to port to PC. Since it's going to be VERY easy to make the game for PC and PS4 they'd have to be retarded to not rake in all that extra money.

i agree what your saying but if i were the game developer i would rather make more money in my pocket by banning used games and the way things are now a lot retail stores are slowly closing down due to online shopping.  i won't be surprised if gamestop would be closing down too, dont get me wrong i enjoy going to gamestop but honestly we all gotta see things the way they are, all these new game consoles are coming out cheap for example ouya for 99 and buy games online and streaming it who knows maybe downloading games would be cheaper then buying the actual games in stores if they were it'll be a repeat of what netflix and redbox did to hollywood video, blockbuster, and those little mom and pops video stores all went bye bye. im not a big fan of downloading games i rather have the actual game in hand but to most people saving ten or 20 bucks off new release games by downloading them dont be surprise if majority of consumers would go down that route.

@pedroabperneta @botroo3 Steam=100% block on used games but it's one of the most popular platforms in gaming.

Even if Sony blocks used games if they give us good prices we will see it continue to see it as a viable and popular platform.

@weetbix23 @CommonSense702 @udmatador This is EXACTLY the issue.  Let's say you bought Aliens: Colonial Marines and couldn't get rid of it.  Would you be willing to take risks again?  I highly doubt it.

weetbix23

@CommonSense702 @udmatador

Why do people care so much about the developers? rest assured, if they are making good games then they are making their money. In Australia EB games (Gamestop) only recently started pricing new releases at 80, at one point they were as high as 110 (AUD). If pre-owned games never existed then I would not take risks and buy games i think may be okay. If it means that much to you then you go ahead and buy games new, I know that I will not be buying a next gen console if pre-owned games are off the table, and i know a lot of people who wont be either. The way I see it; the rich are getting richer and the poor, poorer. On another note i really like what xbox is doing with their 3-15 dollar sales on old games, ive bought like 15, keep that up!
