GameStop CEO Has Brain Tumor Removed, Expected to Make Full Recovery

Prognosis for a full and complete recovery is "very good," doctors say, after small, cancerous tumor removed from Paul Raines' brain.

GameStop CEO Paul Raines underwent unexpected surgery last week to have a small, cancerous tumor removed from his brain. The retailer announced the news today in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. According to GameStop, the surgery, which involved doctors removing the tumor from an "easily accessible" part of his brain, was successful. Raines, 50, is expected to make a full recovery.

"Because it was found very early, his doctors have advised him that his prognosis for a full and complete recovery is very good," GameStop said in a statement (via GamesIndustry International). "The next step is for Paul to undergo preventive chemotherapy. Recovery from this process is expected to take about six weeks. This regimen will restrict his travel during that period, but will not interfere with his continued leadership of the company."

GameStop executive chairman Daniel DeMatteo said, "Speaking for the Board, we have every confidence in Paul's continued leadership and wish him a speedy recovery. While he recovers, our highly-tenured executive team will ensure that our business continues without interruption."

"We thank you for your support during this time."

GameStop will report earnings for the latest quarter this Thursday, August 21. Based on this information, we don't expect Raines will attend the event. Just this week, GameStop introduced a new program that aims to simplify the trade-in process.

News about Raines' health has not spooked investors, as GameStop shares have remained largely flat today.

On a personal level, I hope you get well soon!

On a business level..... never mind.

Glad he's doing well.  I mean, of course he's doing well, he's just shy of having all the money.  My g'pa beat out prostate cancer and an aneurysm in his 70's, because he's got a ton of money and can afford real health care.

Eddie, you know you're trying to bait the empathy lacking population into viewing your POS article just so they can post something about how they wish him ill due to their prior experiences at GameStop.  You should be ashamed of yourself.  I know you're not, but you should be, kettle stirring POS.

I wonder if, when he went in, they asked him if he'd like to pre-order any other surgery.

But seriously though, glad it went went. That's a scary thing.

I would wish him well but then remembered how many customers these guys ripped (and still does) off.

He's a millionaire, so of course he'll survive...

While i'm glad he's going to make a full recovery... Why is this even news on gamespot?

Glad the guy is okay.  I hope he has a new outlook on life after the whole ordeal and will stop trying to screw over customers with:

1. Trade-in values

2. Resale pricing

3. PowerUp membership harassment

4. Gamestop Credit Card signup harassment

5. Preordering additional games harassment

One can dream.

This might explain the new game-trade-in scam they have running...

Good on yeah. Glad to hear they got there early. All the best.

Good news!  Although I wonder if instead of stitching up the wound afterwards the surgeons just stuck a big clear circular sticker on it.  Because, you know, GameStop assures me that that makes something new again after it's been opened.

You know, the fact that he had a brain tumour goes a LONG way towards explaining a lot of recent actions and statements coming from gamestop.

Don't like Gamestop, but am certainly glad he is making a nice recovery. Tumors in general can be no joke, so him recovering is very good. Here's to getting better *slams a shot for him*

My dad had a big tumor in his chest.  He went to the surgery and removed his tumor in the chest. I'm glad that my dad gonna be okay and the God saved his live these days.

Kidding, kidding. As much as I hate the company I'm glad the guy will be ok.

Good news but he should have traded in his brain years ago.

Wonder how well he would have pulled through this if like 50 million of my countrymen he lacked or had inadequate insurance(cheap insurance doesn't cover cancer and the like). I dont wish death on anyone, but a story about some millionaire getting treatment is not something that warms the heart either.

@Tuckpoint  I'm also glad he's doing well, don't wish that kind of stuff even on the worst people. Your post was pretty full of win though. =)

@rawkstar007

I wish people wouldn't be so damn dumb.

1) Trade in values can't be much more than they are now. You see Gamestop buying a game for $35 and selling it for $55 and get pissy. What you don't see is the overhead they have to pay for and the number of unsold copies of games they paid more for than they can now sell them for.

2) Resale pricing is the same deal. You can find things cheaper on Amazon or eBay. Buy it there. Those things should be cheaper since they have very low overhead, if any at all. Some resale prices could use some work, but that's the disadvantage of a specialty shop.

3) I am not sure you understand what harassment is. If having to answer a yes or no question constitutes harassment in your book, shop somewhere else.

4) They haven't even begun to offer that yet.

5) You'll have to deal with this one, too. Other specialty shops can afford to charge above MSRP for their wares, or at least exactly MSRP while other big box retailers  offer below MSRP discounts. Gamestop can't do this, so they rely on these programs.
