GameStop applauds Xbox One used game policy reversal

Retailer says new policy "great news" for gamers and is a testament to Microsoft's understanding of importance of used game market.

Retailer GameStop, which makes a significant portion of its revenue from secondhand sales, has applauded Microsoft for reversing its controversial used game policy today.

"GameStop welcomes today's announcement from Microsoft about changes in functionality for its next-generation console, the Xbox One," the company said in a statement.

"This is great news for gamers and we applaud Microsoft for understanding consumers and the importance of the preowned market."

Under the terms of Microsoft's previous policy, Xbox One games could only be shared once, and only to someone a player has been friends with on Xbox Live for 30 days.

In addition, whether or not secondhand Xbox One games would be allowed at all was in the hands of individual publishers like Activision or Electronic Arts.

Microsoft did away with that policy today, saying gamers will be able to trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc-based games in the same way that they can today on Xbox 360.

"There will be no limitations to using and sharing games; it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360," Microsoft said today.

Anyone else notice how the newest post in a thread is usually someone being positive of MS, kind of as if MS lackeys wait for the thread to be over and then post something.  And usually it's positive but with a small criticism so it doesn't look fake (although the username usually is so generic that it looks fake).  Just something to think about.

Oh and for the record, nothing MS can do will erase "we have an alternative for those who can't connect, it's called the Xbox 360"(not an exact quote).  That is what MS really thinks of us.  Getting Titanfall for the PC, all other good games are multi so PS4, Wii U, or PC (which most games will be better on anyways).

PS, not an Sony fanboy, this gen: 360, PC, and Wii.  Just calling it like I see it.  MS you screwed up.  Let's hope Xbox TWO and Win9 are better.  Our collective wallets Dealtwithit

I dont get it... people say they are gamers and what microsoft were trying to do with the DRM was keep the money within the industry to invest in bigger and better games... you think these games are easy to make? cheap? I personally dont sell old games because i research them before i buy them via reviews, videos, asking friends... so i like all my games. The family sharing is an amazing idea! sharing the library with 10 people! and no, this was not going to be limited to 60 mins, they had enough restrictions on there which funnily enough made it exactly the same as sharing a disc, only one friend on one game at a time (like lending them the 1 disk you would have on your shelf now) or if it has split screen, you can play the game with the licence holder of that game in the library. why would microsoft make it so your family member could only demo the game and have to buy it after 60 mins when it would be on the same console?! it makes no sense and has been confirmed to be untrue and would be idiotic from a business point of view, and microsoft are one of the biggest companies in the world, they didnt get there through cheating people. They also said that games would be cheaper, not at launch but they would be cheaper than buying them in store.  as for the 24 hour login thing the xbox would do that automatically and not affect gaming in any way. And all the people complaining about it having to be on the internet... on the internet........ enough said there. I do agree however that if for any reason the internet was down or not available (military, people who live in rural towns, villages, TPs, Igloos... etc SHOULD NOT be neglected in the next generation so they should listen to both sides of the argument  and come up with a hybrid to please the masses. Keep all the benefits of library sharing for digital downloads and do with that what they planned so the adventurous and brave who are ready to go to the future can dive in head first lead by the major himself, the curious and shy can ease there way into it by seeing how others are getting on and the people who arent ready or want to stick to todays tech can. on the back of xbox one games, they could do the same as todays (this game requires internet, cloud, 24hr login... and this game has offline single, co op, multi player...) not all game developers will want to make games that always use cloud, imagine how much time and work it will take!?

they have to come to my house and personally apologize before I would even consider thinking about buying that piece of shit. NO apology?? NO WATER-COOLER!

Yes. Developers only have power if consumers don't care about their money.

M$ gambled on gamers to simply accept their policies; whether they liked it or not. However, they didn't expect such heavy resistance from the community. It has nothing to do with "we listed to our customers" or "M$ understands the important of used-games market" bullsh*t. Their strategy simply didn't succeed and we ought not to forget their initial intents. Thus, all hail Sony!

Whatever, it would be a testament if the didn't make that mistake in the first place. Don't applaud them for correcting a wrong, applaud them for not making the mistake at all. That is why I am going with the PS4.

Or you could just get a computer and never pay for games

Worth repeating...

If you have to force it MS, it's probably a turd.  No thanks.

Even if they hadn't changed the policies I would still have gotten X1 over PS4. I have invested nearly eight wonderful years with my 360, and even though I got the RROD not once, not twice, but five times, I will always stick by Microsoft. I enjoy my PS3 and PS2 as well, but I have to say that Microsoft consoles are where I feel at home. But if the PS4 is for you, that's perfectly ok also.

Not sure this is really news, Gamestop is a leech on the industry. We don't need them anymore. Eventually we will only have digital downloads and the developers will actually get the money they deserve. Gamestop and other retailers are just getting money for hassling the hell out of you when you go into the store. How many questions do you get asked before they even give you the damn game? Its obnoxious. Then you have people that know next to nothing about games and try to convince you to preorder everything under the sun and get insurance on used games....Its all just too much for no real value.

GONtheSKYLORD
GONtheSKYLORD

I see people keep talking about gamestop ripping people off but this way is still better because now people actually have a choice. If takes 5 minutes to list a game on ebay and make up to 50 bucks back depending on how recently the game was released. I've been doing it for for almost a decade.

If people Choose to trade in at gamestop, it's on them or they just don't care. Similar to the people that preordered xbone before their policy change.

Gamestop and EA games (same company) are easily the worst  company about being fair to the customer. Better to buy new off ozgameshop.com they undercut EB and gamestop by around 50% or more.

Of course they are happy since it was their obvious ripping off of consumers that the used game policy was trying to twhart, but apparently everyone is cool with what they do.

Gamestop has a horrible used game policy for gamers.  They give the lowest possible price for trade-ins and then turn around and sell it for 3 to 5 times what they paid you for it.  Gamers would do much better trading with each other through places like Glyde, Ebay, Amazon, etc..., than going through the Gamestop ripoff middleman.  I wish gamers would wise up and put Gamestop out of business with their abusive trade-in/buy back policies.

I am not going to forgive microsoft for what they intended to do, but then backed off because of money. This is coming from an xbox owner who has never owned a playstation console. I'm buying PS4 this time around.

This should make all of you guys happy now with the Xbox One being that you can play used games on it. I was one of the very few people whom this didn't bother because I buy like 99% of all my games new and sealed. Atleast now I don't have to all read and listen to these complaints about that anymore.

@Black__Puma And you honestly think that Sony didn't try to implement such a system just because they care about their customers? The only difference between Sony and MS is that Sony took the backlash to the rumours about the xbox one more seriously. They would love to implement such a system if they thought they could get away with it, simply because it's in their interest, as would Nintendo for that matter.

Sorry, but people seem to have this Sony is our friend mentality, when they are just as money orientated as MS. They just went about things more intelligently this time around.

penpusher

@zoomzack indeed, but then it's been like that for a while now. At least things aren't getting any worse.

And btw if you're paying that much for games then more fool you. Wait a little bit for the price to go down, or get it second hand (yay) instead.

@DJWicky_wicky_ and WE get to keep retail game stores on the high street. If you think that there business model would've survived without the revenue earned by the used game market you are greatly mistaken. This is good news for the consumer.

You really don't know what this rage was all about. WE put our protests forward because we are the CONSUMERS we won't stand for this snake in the grass crap from Microsoft and they better hear it LOUD and CLEAR. They better get it. They want a boycott.

They need to be restructuring their game console pr wing yesterday, because they are headed for failure!

@tekas0 What Gamestop did you go to? The one I went to, the people there seem to know plenty about games and don't bother me at all about preorders. You could just buy used games on Amazon and avoid all that obnoxious stuff.

@whitefalkon MS wanted to have no sell back so that they could get people to just download games at home and make all of the money. Don't be fooled MS isn't doing anything for us and neither is Gamestop.

@ghstbstr Agreed. It was neither here nor there with me with it. There will be a time when it will come back though. digital will be the way. I won't be surprised 8-10 years from now, we see consoles (if there will be another gen) with no disc drive.

slipknotmaggot1
slipknotmaggot1

@balerball_basic @whitefalkon you wouldn't get any less or more from selling them at best buy or any other store. and no one goes to ebay to buy games.. selling them yourself is the only way to make as much as gamestop does, and even at that, you can still find them cheaper at gamestop, even if you did sell it yourself. its a lose lose situation.

ShimmeringSword
ShimmeringSword

@stlguelk You should pay the little extra to get them new if you can, you're not supporting the developers when you buy a used game from gamestop. Buying used from individuals I'm fine with, as at least money isn't going to a greedy middleman.
