In recognition of the growing mobile games market, GameSpot has launched its new Mobile Games channel. The new section of the site has listings for over 10,000 mobile games on the five major mobile operating systems: iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm WebOS for the Pre, Google Android, and Windows Mobile.
Given its burgeoning catalog--21,178 "Game & Entertainment Titles" and counting--the iPhone OS will be a particular focus, receiving its own navigation tab on the site. Apple has sold nearly 22 million iPhones worldwide to date, including 5.2 million in the April-June quarter alone--a 626 percent increase from the same quarter in 2008. The iPhone OS is also used by the iPod Touch line of multimedia handhelds.
Besides offering information on mobile games, operating systems, US carriers, and handsets, the GameSpot Mobile and iPhone channels will feature primers for each OS to help new and prospective handset owners start playing games on each system. The channel will also offer news on developments in the mobile gaming world and editorial features, as well as reader reviews and community support.
Last but not least, the GameSpot Mobile and iPhone will be offering editorial reviews of a variety of high-profile titles, provided by official content partner Slidetoplay.com. These include the iPhone games Madden NFL 10, Wolfenstein RPG, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Modern Combat: Sandstorm, and Need for Speed: Undercover.
