GameSpot GamePlay Episode 50: Pining for the Fjords

Kevin returns to hosting duties to discuss heroes and antiheroes with Carolyn, Tyler, and Tom.

GameSpot GamePlay Episode 50: Pining for the Fjords

Host Kevin VanOrd leads Carolyn Petit, Tyler Winegarner, and Tom Mc Shea on a wild goose chase aboard a Z-wing, stopping long enough to mix up Montreal game studios, explore Crateria (where Caro buys all her crates), and go Earthbound aboard the Mother ship. This week's topics: The losses at Square and Insomniac, the Ouya's game library, and Kevin's weird loyalty to unsuccessful Microsoft hardware.

As promised, a link to the excellent Errant Signal analysis of The Last of Us.

All this talk about antiheroes made me think of Hotline Miami. It's this crazy point of view of playing as an avatar in a game who is acting as an avatar himself and indulging in bloody fantasies for the greater good (as he thinks anyway).

They didn't know what gun a M4 is and they review video games for a living??  I completely understand if your not into shooters but that's still pretty hard knowledge to avoid.  I would bet everyone in that room played at least two of the Uncharted games and two of the Modern Warfare games...

I really loved everything about the sound design and soundtrack of Beyond Good & Evil.

I only played Earthbound once, a couple months ago. Still haven't finished it, but I recognized the song to the game lol

21:54 I knew straight away that was Beyond Good & Evil. I loved that game so much, and it had a very memorable soundtrack.

Wow, the game about guessing the game from a person describing the box art was awesome.  That's one game that needs to become a mainstay on the show.

''HE'S PINING FOR THE FJORDS??? What kind of talk is that? Look, why did he fall flat on his back the moment I got 'im home?''

''The Norwegian Blue prefers keepin' on it's back! Remarkable bird, id'nit, squire? Lovely plumage!''

''Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there!''

''Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I hadn't nailed that bird down, it would have nuzzled up to those bars, bent 'em apart with its beak, and VOOM! Feeweeweewee!''

''VOOM?!? Mate, this bird wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it! 'E's bleedin' demised!''

''No no! 'E's pining!''

''E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!''

If Tyler didn't care for Troy Baker's performance in BioShock Infinite, he should probably blame the director.

@wolf503 I think the show was named Gameplay because they play quiz games on the show...that's my guess, it's a good name for the show though.

@TomMcShea @max-hit

Yeah, Tom, you keep things really focused and on-topic while Kevin allows for more meandering talk.  Both can be good, but the latter is usually better unless it's taken to an extreme -- personally, when the Giant Bombcast is four hours long and is just the site's personalities chatting about nothing in particular I tend to lose interest.  There's a happy medium there somewhere, and Kevin usually does a pretty bang-up job of it.

In other words, ease up on the dictatorial reigns when you're hosting these things, McShea! :-P

I'll be honest Kevin I did not listen to the podcast yet, but up to now Tom has dumped all over the new system. I believe we both can admit to that. I understand the new system has some issues, but when Microsoft has done nothing, but reverse policies to apply more to gamers I think it is time to see some positives on the new system. Thanks for the reply and I be listening to your podcast today.

@Snakepond1 @TomMcShea Oh yeah, I was just thinking this year. Quantum Break could be rad (I loved Alan Wake), and I'm really looking forward to Below. Also, I've been excited for Crimson Dragon for a few years now.

Snakepond1
Snakepond1

@TomMcShea @Snakepond1 Microsoft transition from 360 to X1 from what I seen and read looks more fluid and interconnected then anything Nintendo has done and Sony has yet to discuss anything. For one, X1 and 360 players can still communicate with each other. This is pretty innovative and I have not seen anybody else do this.

As for switching apps the possibility of playing one game or movie while waiting for your multiplayer or coop game to start excites me.

C'mon, no exclusive game interests you other then Project Spark . What about Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Titanfall, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Below, Crimson Dragon, etc...? I know you have your tastes, but this is a decent list. At least I think so.

The controller interests me because I like driving games and trigger feedback while your ABS brakes kick in through your fingers just sounds great.

I have never been a fan of kinect, but now that it comes with the system developers might implement some cool features. I have no fear of the camera, since I walk around with an iPhone that tracks me all day.

As for the online 360 was far more stable as compared to Nintendo and Sony. Going forward I believe it will only get better. Also, Microsoft allowing developers to use their worldwide network of databases to use as direct servers will improve online play as opposed to host servers that we see right now. No more game drops or host switching.

In the end I like to see the positives in all systems and I believe each system including Xbox brings something new and interesting to the table. Maybe what I wrote will not affect your opinion of the system and I cannot blame you Microsoft has done a terrible job at marketing it, but your never know maybe the system will appeal to you someday.

@Snakepond1 I would expect to transfer my funds, gamers score, and membership to the new system. That would be crazy if they didn't allow that.

The ability to switch out of apps and games doesn't interest me on the surface (I only care about one app/game at a time), but maybe I'd use it?

None of the exclusive games have interested me thus far.

Haven't tried to the controller so I don't know how the triggers feel. I generally dislike rumble, though. I even use a Sixaxis at home so my controller doesn't shake.

I haven't seen anything interesting from Kinect yet. They've shown tech demos but nothing that shows how it would be used in a game. Voice commands could be done with a cheap microphone so I'm curious why the feel the need to include an expensive camera. MS has to prove its worth.

I already own a Blu Ray player though larger storage capacity for games is always a good thing.

The online infrastructure is already fine on the X360, PS3, and PC (through Steam).

So, yeah, nothing has impressed me so far, and I'm annoyed that I have to buy (and keep connected) a camera that I don't want. Plus, no plans for any backward compatibility is a pretty big issue.

I really just want some games I'm interested in, though. The coolest thing they've show is Project Spark and I can get that elsewhere. Everything else looks "meh" so far.

@TomMcShea @Snakepond1 Hello Tom, do you truly feel Microsoft has done nothing worth praising in its next gen announcement? What about the ability to transfer your funds, gamers score and xboxlive membership over at no additional fee. The ability to switch in and out of apps and games. The exclusive games and content coming to the system. The impulse triggers, the upgraded kinect, bluray drive, online infrastructure, flexible achievement system, etc... Also, the fact that even before the system is released this mega corporation is turning and changing to accommodate its customer base and be competitive. Before we set the Xbox One to sea let us wait for the thing to come out.

TomMcShea
TomMcShea

@Snakepond1 I fully admit that I've had little positive to say about the One. Just waiting for Microsoft to do something worth praising. The best things they've done so far is play catch up by scratching outdated policies. Yay?

@wolf503 Sorry for the confusion, GameSpot GamePlay is the name of our somewhat long-running, loosely quiz-show-formatted podcast. (This is the 50th episode!)
