"This is not me being racist" No, it's not. You didn't even have to preface what you were saying with that, Tom.

On top of this, I find that Tom saying that he can't speak about the sexual aspects of Bayonetta because of cultural differences. Well, Japan is not inhabited by space aliens. Is it really that impossible to talk about someone's game with them?

I think Carolyn deftly avoided the question of "Is Bayonetta sexist?" Backflipped right over it.

I don't watch television.  I have not watched it for the last 18 years.  I am not interested in watching it in the future.  I am not interested in the slightest in kinect.  I have tried it out extensively with many various games, and pretty much all of the games that it touched have turned out to be terrible - mostly due to the kinect interface.

As for smartglass, I do not own any devices that could use it, nor would I be interested in using it if I did.  Why would I ever want to have to drop my controller -mid game- and then pick up some random other device to do something, then pick my controller back up again?  Also, I am not interested in any of the random online options either.  I don't use facebook, or twitch, or skype, or any of those other random things - why would I want to pick up a device that charges me more to do things like that?

This point of view comes from a person who owns 3 xbox 360's.  It is not loyalty to a specific console or console maker.  This comes from taking a hard look at the consoles, and picking the one that is more focused on what I want - that being a machine that is about playing games.  So i'll probably be getting a PS4 this generation for sure.

Alright guys, this is strike three.

I'm tired of this podcast telling me what games should and shouldn't be able to exist.

That guy harassing that women is wrong, and it's a problem.  I get that.

But then when the hosts say things like, "Well, maybe people in the game industry wouldn't be like that if games like Bayonetta weren't the way they are!", as though I'm unable to separate fiction from reality, and it just frustrates the hell out of me.

I'm just fed up with being told that games shouldn't be the way I, or their creators want them to be if you guys don't agree with their content.

It's the third time this has come up in the last two months and I just feel like I'm wasting my time listening anymore.  Unsubscribed.

I felt Nintendo did bad.  Everything they showed was coming out in three to four months.  Other things got delayed.  They did show some new things but this console has been out for awhile and we have had nothing but promises and it was annoying. I love Nintendo to death but I have this console but almost no reason to play it.

Caro seems to bring her experience into discussing specific characters into places they don't really belong. the Persona article she wrote was pretty off base and coloured by her own experiences over the game itself, not because it comes from a japanese perspective.

Last of Us got ruined for me by the people commenting on Tom's review on GS. For me, the game's I play are a direct reflection of my personality and the way I see this world. That's why I loved Mass Effect and Halo Reach. And I frankly can not bear to be associated with a bunch of raving lunatics that make up the fanbase of The Last of Us. That comment section was Medal of Honor: Warfighter all over again.

I really don't think Microsoft was listening to peoples concerns,  I mean when they came right out and said "Well you can just buy a xbox360 if you don't want to deal with online"... that's a pretty outrageous response from a company trying to sell their products.

It's simply the numbers that they've been paying attention to, everyone who passed on ordering a Xbox One or went ahead and ordered a PS4, those are the people who really made the difference I think.  They've seen that hardly anyone is pre-ordering the new Xbox and, FINALLY, they get a bit of sense that their DRM techniques won't work.

I'd still be concerned about another flip-flop 2 years down the road when everyone has become comfortable with their Xbox One.

OMG, WTF Mcshea? When you talk about artisic over tech, X over Assassin' Creed IV and Watch Dog can hardly make the case, since X looks so genric to anyone who watches anime while the two blockbuster have more unique design.

Great podcast. The free wheeling approach works a lot better in my opinion.  Much more engaging that way.

On the topic of sexism. I fully agree on most points, but I don't think there's anything wrong with having a bit of sex appeal for sex appeal's sake. Doesn't matter whether it's men or women either. Why do you think guys like Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham or Hugh Jackman lose their shirts in just about every single movie they're in? For story related-reason? No, they do it because they're handsome chaps and people like looking at them. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Great podcast as always!  It was fun to see Caro and Tom get talking about sexism in the industry, even if it was a subject that bordered on taking the podcast too off course.  It's definitely a timely subject.  It's great to hear what games were appealing to everyone (e.g. everything not par for the course), and just hear the general back and forth on the Xbox One debate.  The quizzes are fun, but with so much news this week, this was a meaty podcast without them.  Look forward to next!

@darkspineslayer You seem perplexed that an editor would editorialize, and that a critic would critique. The very nature of an editorial essay is to apply personal experience to a work of art. From my perspective, the Persona 4 article was rather on point.

Kevin-V
Kevin-V moderator staff

@MasterTazo What?

Not sure what you are referring to, but if you are talking about Project Spark, the PC version will require Windows 8. The hardware and OS being used to show off most games at E3 has nothing to do with the final product. Microsoft has repeated several times that games like Project Spark and Halo: Spartan Assault will require Windows 8 (or Windows Phone 8, in Halo's case). If you've ever seen any E3 coverage, then you know that games are often shown running on PCs--even games that eventually do not come to the PC.

@PLH2034 There's nothing particularly wrong with the person, beyond an annoying voice, but they could certainly get rid of all the sexual drama and political correctness they all love to dwell on.  It seriously make me want to go out and pre-order games like Killer is Dead even though I wouldn't normally be interested.

RealFabioSooner
RealFabioSooner

@PLH2034 Just so you know, I wrote a big post about this and it was deleted.

I did not offend anyone, I just said that it won't do to ask to "get rid of Petit" because it will only make she act more like a victim, because that's the modus operandi self-victimized people take these days. Also said that the only way to deal with it is to do the same as it happened with Microsoft's draconian policies: by not downloading and listening to podcasts with her in it.

Of course it was deleted, as this one probably will also be, proving my point: people with that mentality can't handle dissenting opinions - they can only accuse others of all kinds of horrible things to appeal not to reason but emotion. It's social bullying to impose a point of view in the world. You either agree with all she (and Kevin, and McShea) say about "sexism" or you're an horrible person that hates everyone. It's intellectual dishonesty at its finest. It's the same mentality that tries to sell everyone that if you don't agree with Obama you "must be a racist".

Shame on you, guys. Shame on you. I know you won't care about losing a listener, specially one you automatically deem "hateful" just because one doesn't agree with you, but I'll still speak up in the hopes you get to think a little bit at night, look at the mirror and think you'll really be able to tell yourselves you practice what you preach about "respecting differences".

RealFabioSooner
RealFabioSooner

@PLH2034 Don't ask for that, you'll only give more grounds for her to act even more as a victim and keep bitching about "sexism" and "oppression" at every. single. opportunity, no matter if there's merit to the claim or not.

You have to understand the mindset of people indoctrinated into the current trend of self-victimization in all of Western culture. They set things up in a way where you just can't contest them in any level without making yourself look like a cold-blooded person who "doesn't care" about others. It's not about rationality and equality, it's about making a scene. It's the political version of "attention-whoring" that later escalates as a form of social bullying.

The only way to deal with it is to ignore it. As some famous figure I can't recall said, the best way to make a [liberal/communist/socialist] look bad is to let him or her speak freely. Given time, the shallow nature of their speech gets through even to the most sheepish average Joe. You can only manipulate people with emotion for so long, at some point they'll use their rational minds at least a little bit.

A very educational video about this (just try to phase out the Republican talk and pay attention to how the social bullies operate):
http://vimeo.com/64213620#at=0

I refused to comment on every podcast derailed by constant "sexism" bitching because of this, even when I had to endure stuff said that were downright dishonest and childish (to say the least). I'm only bothering to post this in here because I believe there are a lot of listeners that feel the same way but feel too bullied to speak out.

The only reason I still put up with it in this podcast is because of Kevin, who may share all or most of the same positions as Petit but at least is level-headed enough to avoid pushing them incessantly
(or at least is smart enough to let her bear the burden of doing this, it doesn't matter in the end). There's a CHASM between being intolerant of dissenting opinions and having to endure constant bitching. I can handle the former, but the latter is achieving a breaking point in GameSpot gameplay - and that became very evident when we had a couple of Petit-free casts recently and they were funnier, smarter and more informative overall (even the one with the Gamespot UK guys, some of which I don't really agree with/like as journalists but were amusing all the same).

So if you're one that feels the same way, just do what I intend to do from now on: refuse to download and listen to any cast that has Petit in it. And if Kevin doesn't mention the participants in an episode's description, refuse to download and listen to it just to prevent giving more clicks/downloads inadvertently to any episode she may be in. The only effective way to deal with it is to demonstrate direct displeasure. We did it with Microsoft's draconian policies, and all of the Gamespot's podcast crew found it beautiful and valid. Let's see if they keep the same mentality when it reaches themselves.

@X-Robert I disagree--I think X looks terrific, though I think the other two games look great as well. I wouldn't call ACIV nor Watch Dogs unique in their art design, however. In fact, they are clearly artistically similar to Ubisoft's previous games: Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and so forth. These games are all cut from the same visual cloth to some degree, which I admire. As for Assassin's Creed IV having a unique visual design, well, it looks beautiful, but even as the biggest Assassin's Creed fan in the world, I could not possibly argue its uniqueness.

Well, does not seem like a moderator is going to get around to approving my first reply. Anyways...

Critiques should be backed up by examples within the source. Kanji being a confused teenager is a lot more open to interpretation, but her discription of Naoto as transgendered is just plain wrong. Her posing as a man was just a way to break the glass ceiling to her, it's stated as much almost immediately after that boss battle. Progressing her social link just makes it more clear she does not desire to be a man, just taken seriously.

She is in the bottom left of this picture from the end of the game. Does that strike you as someone uncomfortable with being a woman?

darkspineslayer
darkspineslayer

@Kevin-V @darkspineslayer Not sure what happened to the first time i replied to this...

Critiques should be based off examples within the source. Her depiction of Naoto as transgendered isn't really the case, and that description becomes even less true as you progress her social link. It was simply a way for her to break the glass celling of her profession.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m5tsxavlxa1qi2dmoo1_r1_500.jpg

She's the bottom left in this screencap from the end of the game, does that look like someone uncomfortable with being a woman?

I'll concede that Kanji is left up to the imagination a lot more, but I would think the confused teenager explanation would be more fitting than applying the "gay" label full stop.

darkspineslayer
darkspineslayer

@Kevin-V @darkspineslayer Critiques usually come from points that can be backed up with context. Her description of Naoto as transgendered for example, she isn't, and that description only becomes less true as you progress her social link. It was mearly a way to break the glass celling of her profession.

@RealFabioSooner   What IS this?!  Do you think your above everyone else or what?  Your totally just drawing conclusions that aren't there...

I'll give you that Petit is overly preachy about the plight of women and over-sexualization and such, but those are real issues that concern her, clearly.  But all this other nonsense your spouting is just that... nonsense.
