GameSpot GamePlay Episode 4: Pulling a Brad

Giant Bomb's Brad Shoemaker escapes digital death just long enough to answer tough questions about Borderlands weaponry and the infinite cosmos. Meanwhile, Justin Calvert name-drops his close pal Dan Brown, Tom Mc Shea calls out the industry's worst exaggerations, and Chris Watters gets into a rhythm…game. Kevin VanOrd hosts.

This week's quiz featured a screenshot question. For those playing at home, here are the screens in question!

Also, one more thing, those were fun little collaborative games.

Oops, I meant everything, not everyone.

I know we, or I have to be realistic since you guys are working and can't do everyone people want and suggest, but I'd love to see a full on Giantbomb/GameSpot podcast. You know, the main guys that often come and do them.

Brad should be on at least once a month!

Did I miss something on the site, finding this page took TONS of effort.  I had to go to the twitter feed and find the link.  I MUST be missing something obvious...like a link to recent podcasts....I pray that I am just overlooking something...

That's probably the most Brad has spoken on any podcast ever.

Also, Brad's first death in NSMB Wii was his doing, Ryan did not touch him at all.

I would really prefer to listen to you guys just talk about games and going into some discussion about current video game related topics than this whole 'gameshow'... I'm sorry but I just don't find it that interesting. Sure - some trivia is ok, but this is just to much and it gets boring after a while. Please go back to the old HotSpot format, it was much better.

Great show as usual, guys. My one wish for the podcast is that you haul Sinclair's ass on here once and a while.

And the crossover begins! I knew this day would come when GB and CV were bought by CBSi and I've got to say that I really enjoyed it. More please.

I'll just copy and paste my comment about Yves Guillemot's statement:

"This is a one-sided approach but it's true to a certain extent.  Devs aren't willing to take the chance on new IP in the waning years of a console cycle.   This is not to say that all new IP at the end of a console cycle is doomed, rather historically the market has proven to be less receptive to new IP at this particular stage.  So while new IP can and should be developed at all times during the cycle, devs wish to play it safe and stick with reboots, remakes, and sequels in order to guarantee profits.  It's a business decision, and it's an unfortunate one for the gamers who are strictly console-based.

As for me, I have a high end PC gaming rig and I've seen a huge growth in development for the platform due to this extended cycle for the current generation of consoles.  I prefer to game on the PC as well, so I'm not particularly bothered by the fact that this cycle has taken so long.  However, if I were a console-only gamer, I'd want the next generation of consoles to be released as soon as possible, because sequels and trilogies and reboots etc. are getting rather old." - Me

P.S. I hope this show sticks around because I love it!  Also, please keep bringing guests/new people because it adds an interesting element to the game.  I like the guys from Giant Bomb because they're all good writers and they know their game stuff.  Lastly, this was a great show and I enjoyed it very much.

I'm not feeling the gameshow aspect at all. Too much "uhh-ing" and guessing taking away from what could be meaningful discussion. Perhaps trivia could be part of a regular podcast, but a podcast of trivia isn't appealing to me. I guess if I am in the minority then continue as planned.

Is the name really going to stay as "Gameplay"? There have to be more creative minds than that in the Gamespot offices.

I don't think the Ubisoft is taking such a risk on the Wii U. Most of the games their games that are gonna be released on that platform are from stabilished franchises or focus on the main public from the Wii. Their real bet is ZombiU, which targets a public that was kinda forgotten on the Wii and is a new IP.

@slymcbeans Yeah, I am frustrated too. Eventually we will get our own page! But for every podcast that posts, I will post links to all past podcasts. (Such as on this page.) Links to subscribe via iTunes and RSS are below as well.

@slymcbeans I'm afraid I don't think you're missing anything. I said the same thing in the comments of one of the earlier GamePlays, I don't think there's anything in the site header that would lead to you this page or the old HotSpot. I got here looking through the recent news posts on the front page, but eventually that's not gonna work anymore.

The show is on iTunes now, so that makes it easier to find for me, but especially for comments, it's a bummer.

I wholly agree with this. There is a serious lack of insightful discussion or analysis in the show. This, I think, has to do with the format of GAMEPLAY. There just isn't any avenue during the episode to instigate intelligent conversations. It's a shame the panelists are constrained like this. Maybe a TOPIC OF THE WEEK would inject some much needed energy into the show.   @Simon86PL

@saiyajinsc He got grabbed at the last minute for something else, but Brad was gracious enough to fill in!

@robfield The balance is sure to change over time as the podcast grows. I hope you stick with us!

@FreakAche pretty much, but now the entire show is in the form of a gameshow.

@El_DeathDealer Generally, we want more discussion, and past episodes hit that mark better. We're still learning as we go, and as we do, I hope you'll tune in!
