GameSpot GamePlay Episode 3: Biological Warehouse

Kevin VanOrd applies patch 1.03 to John Davison, Tom Mc Shea, Carolyn Petit, and Chris Watters.

GameSpot GamePlay Episode 3: Biological Warehouse

Kevin VanOrd hosts another fine episode of GameSpot's news and gaming quiz show. This week, Tom Mc Shea, John Davison, Carolyn Petit, and Chris Watters join him, only to discover disappointment over The Old Republic's future, Catwoman's true identity, and game review cliches that drive them batty.

Hey guys,

as a French guy myself, I will say, I rarely hear english speakers make jokes about the French (people and language) with so much actual respect for the language itself. It was witty and made me laugh. Quite frankly, there was nothing wrong with your jokes, I certainly enjoy the occasional jab ;)

At least, you guys don't immediately go to the "all French people are arrogant" routine that I hear on other less informed podcasts... Tested, I am looking at you.

I liked your discussion about the state of SWTOR at the beginning, and when you mentioned a hybrid free to play / monthly fee system is exactly what I was hoping would happen for SWTOR, it could save the game I love to get that extra revenue from "Whales" , and let's face it, there are some serious Star Wars fanboys out there who will Whale the heck out of the game just because of the license.

Dungeons and Dragons Online (and I'd imagine LOTRO but I haven't played it) uses a hybrid system where you can pay 10 Bucks a month and have a VIP account with access to everything and a small stipend to spend in the in-game store; or you can play free-to-play, with limited access to specific dungeons and instances, with the ability to purchase cheap tickets for 1-time entry, or slightly more expensive permanent passes. Players (through repetition of free content) can also choose to pay nothing but most will want to at least try some of the more advanced content and will pay one way or the other to get it.

Yippee! It's on iTunes. Now to get caught up and see if I like it as much as i did the Hotspot. Carolyn, Tom, and Kevin being on the show is a big plus. You all are entertaining to listen to. Chris Watters was always a decent guest. I haven't heard of John Davison.

Considering we're in a dry spell period of game releases can anyone bring back My Esteemed Colleagues? I loved seeing you guys showing off your rhetoric prowess.

Great show. Love the banter. This should be a video podcast though. I do miss the hotspot days with Tom Magrino.

Ok, so I've been an avid user of this site for years and years, and I've been onboard with pretty much every show you've blessed us with, but I have to make a comment here. Making teams and quizzes in an audio-only show just doesn't work. I wanna hear news, insight and interesting gaming-related conversations, that's it. Keeping track of who's who and what team is saying what is just a hassle. Keep it simple. No gimmicks. We like you just the way you are.

PC is in nearly the same boat as the consoles right now.  Many (like me) are waiting for Windows 8 to upgrade their hardware that can barely, if even, run new FPS games now.

The timing of BF4 would suggest it will be for the next gen of both.

I'm surprised how the formula of mixing news, commentary and quiz show is really getting better and better. It seemed the kind of thing that could not wear out when used with any regularity, something more appropriate to special episodes, but I guess Kevin and the crew is proving me wrong. Keep it going guys, you're the best journos in the gaming press and we need a podcast with you.

As much as Tom McShea is great, I do wish he weren't on everything show related. We need time to want him after all.

Great show and special thanks to Kevin for hosting it amazingly well. Just wanted to ask if you could bring back the email section from the hotspot where the listeners could send questions, suggestions and whatnot to the reviewers? I really liked that part from the hotspot and it would be nice to see it happening again.

Keep up the good work guys and thanks.

@evilweav We miss Tom too :(

There were a number of reasons for calling the show something different, one of which was to be respectful of the great host we lost. I hope you grow to enjoy GamePlay too.

@Lord_Python1049 That is a plan. Now, if only I can add about 12 hours to the day, I can make it happen!

@FreezeryderAs much as we love the format you describe, it did very poor traffic and listenership. (Is that a word? Well, it should be.) As you can see on the comments below, a lot of folks really do like this format, proving--if anything--that there is no pleasing everyone, all of the time. I am sorry you had trouble keeping track of what was going on. It's the first feedback we've had to that effect, and I will keep it in mind.

And for what it's worth, I think there was plenty of news, insight, and gaming-related conversation in the show. Ultimately, that's the purpose: provide a springboard for fun conversation. The show will be tweaked as it continues, of course, but we'll never be able to be everything to everyone. I hope the show comes to have value for you!

@Freezeryder I gotta agree.  I'd really like just a show that discusses the daily news topics and what they mean for the industry.

@Freezeryder Cnet dumped most of their daily podcasts, it would be great if GS picked up the slack with a short 30 min or so daily gaming audio show now that they also seem to have dumped U.S. video features.

Kevin-V

@BigDogZoo It comes from an online music library to which we subscribe. It's called "Wind Farm."

Kevin-V

@Jacanuk This podcast, like the majority of podcasts, is audio only. When our old podcast went to a video format, that change was not met with wide appreciation. We have a hugs amount of video programming, but this podcast has been designed as an audio program. Sorry to disappoint :(

@saiyajinsc you and me both. I have no idea what they talked about on that show...they could have said all kinds of things that I would have to yell at them about, but I don't want to spoil the game for myself - so for now it very well could be a little oasis of misbehavior.

@Lord_Python1049 Tom McShea is great? Laugh Out Loud.  Great at what? whining about everything and putting great games down?

TomMcShea

@mehrdad19872010 That's a good idea. We do have stronger user feedback in another show, Quoted for Truth, which is discussion built around user comments.

@Mercadeo If we gamers dismiss games as nothing to take seriously, then the world at large won't take them seriously either. The nature of what we do--the art we love, the entertainment we value--means that we should take games seriously. That's what brings us together: our passion for games, and what they bring to our lives.

@Greyfeld Quoted for Truth, which covers news, still exists, and if I heard correctly, there will be an episode up today. It's not daily, but it's still a very good show.

@NoX5  @Lord_Python1049 He's great at expressing his views eloquently on a variety of topics. His job isn't to like what you like, nor does he whine, and his value as a critic and as a person does not require your approval.

Lord_Python1049

@Kevin-V Yes, but there is such thing as over-exposure to a good thing. It's just my two cents though.
