GameSpot GamePlay Episode 29: Eat My Dead Skin

Destructoid reviews editor Jim Sterling stops by for a nice long talk about Killzone, Kinect, and how much he hates being called "nugget."

GameSpot GamePlay Episode 29: Eat My Dead Skin

This one's a doozy. Destructoid's Jim Sterling stops by again to get his nuggets and meatballs in order and join the GameSpot team on its first bug hunt. Tom Mc Shea takes little notice, however, given his preoccupation with the great anti-breast crusade of 2013. Meanwhile, Carolyn Petit makes 38 drops, simulated; Chris Watters makes spores in the creepy science lab; and host Kevin VanOrd considers the problems of scale between a mouse and a donkey.

Also, we talk about games. Be warned: mature language within.

@Kevin-V Is there going to be like outtakes of the worsest dialogue of this game on video? It would be funny anyway. After all, controversy is rare in videogames and I could use a laugh. Thanks. Well on Aliens: Colonial Marines anyway.

Even though it may or may not happen, I do like a spoilercast like Resident Evil 6 on Aliens Colonial Marines. After all, that topic is worth checking out with hopefully Brad Shoemaker again and perhaps other web gane reviewers, or just the Gamespot staff. Don't know what's worth laughing at but it's cool to dissect how bad that game is. Especially tripping over corpses which is my favourite part.

Great show as always. You can never have too much Jim Sterling. Any chance you could get Tom Chick on the show as well? That would be fantaastic.

Finally someone that takes a stab at Assassin's Creed for being sub-par. Definitely a snoozefest.

Also, thanks to Tom for the proper pronunciation for "niche."

MW4  wow that took me awhile.  It played while you were waiting to connect to a match.

I like to hear Jim on the show again.  He is a good addition to the show.  I wouldn't be mad if he happen to get put on another episode.

Has anyone noticed that Kevin says ''and so on and so forth'' a lot?

Can you please smooth out the audio? It is very harsh on the ears and also I hate it when the volume goes up or down depending on how loud you talk because if there is a random scream then it makes me jump. I'm not sure how to describe that as obviously you can talk at different volumes, however I don't want it transferring to my end as I want to be able to control the max volume lol. Like when you're watching TV they make an effort to keep the volume all the same, however on the podcast you have quiet times and then loud times and it's annoying having to keep adjusting to it.

This was a very good podcast and dare I say it, better than some of the others. I think it had something to do with Tom being funnier than ever :)

They were talking about a sequel that could come out, and yes, Killzone 4 may be it, and that'd be awesome, but I was thinking of InFamous 3. I just bought the second one, or, I bought the InFamous Collection just about 30 minutes ago. Yay.

Actually, donkey poop is kind of small--about the size of an egg--and is kind of hard, so it wouldn't mix well with a dead mouse if it landed on it. (ref. 1hr.03min.43sec)

Great show Kevin, as usual :)

Killzone 2/3's Warzone mode is sheer genius. I'm usually not a fan of overly derivative games, but I think every online shooter would benefit from blatantly copying it.

Why don't you guys use the word 'polished' in reviews anymore?

Kevin VanOrd, you're locked in a room with RE6, Operation Raccoon City, and Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Which do you play first?

Great episode guys! Had to go back and rewatch the Alien demo to see just how badly they lied to the public as detailed in Jim's rant.

Big ups for Cryostasis!  That game was cool as heck, those Eastern Europeans really know how to make desperate feeling environments.  Playing that game alone in the dark during these cold Canadian winters was a very immersive experience, they nailed the environment.  Interesting story too, and open for interpretation.

Killzone has the best weapons of any game. Every gun fires like a monster and hits like it should, especially the shotgun. My only problem with the games is that there aren't enough people playing.

Ha, Achron!  Wasn't that made by like 1 or 2 guys?  It's rough around the edges, but major props to that game for actually innovating the rts genre.

"everything itagaki touches"  Really tom, ninja gaiden for the original XB wasn't a great game? It was critically acclaimed? hmm.

Kevin-V

@NTM23 "Polished" has become an overused and meaningless word, because it doesn't actually communicate anything substantial. It's a lazy man's fallback: "The graphics are polished." When you think about it, what does that even mean? We try (and sometimes even succeed!) to use more specific and evocative descriptions.

Kevin-V
Kevin-V moderator staff

@megadeth1117 It depends. Do I also get a noose? That at least gives me a fourth option.

In all seriousness, I don't know how I could choose. Probably Colonial Marines because it's not blatantly frustrating.

@jobo030 His rant about all the things not in Colonial Marines was hilarious.

@Falzonn Totally. That games was sort of busted. But it was also one of the most innovative games I have ever played.

Kevin-V
Kevin-V moderator staff

@FreedomPrime Unless my memory is off, he never said that what Itagaki makes can't be great--he says that all his games are (I will paraphrase here) boobalicious. He definitely says about DoA that he knows it's a good game, but he can't get past the sexualization of the characters.

@Kevin-V @omarpasos66104 I also say excellent a lot when listening to the podcast, I try to do it like Mr. Burns but you guys always keep me laughing, keep up the great work guys.

@Kevin-V Huh. OK. I didn't see anything wrong with it, I was just curious. I've never used the word myself when describing something in games. Thanks for the info.

Falzonn

@Kevin-V @Falzonn Late but, I wonder ... have you folks ever done a "Most innovating games you've never played" article?

FreedomPrime
FreedomPrime

@Kevin-V @FreedomPrime He just seemed a too judgmental. Saying " I think that series is disgusting" 'everything itagaki touches, that guy is a sleaze (not sure of the spelling)" ouch. that's a little harsh. "appealing to the lowest common denominator"  I played sigma and there was a scene where someone was dying (I can't remember the character) but I remember ayane was holding them as they were dying, it was suppose to be a touching moment, but I kept shaking the controller making her boobs smack the dying character in the face. That is sooo funny to me. Now if he doesn't think that's funny then he is a stick in the mud. he is entitled to his opinion tho so whatever. Just wanted to state mine.

TomMcShea

@FreedomPrime @Kevin-V Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to work on stating my opinion without seeming to force it on others, but there's no guarantee I'll be able to pull off that feet.
