GameSpot Fifty Goes Live, Ranks All The Games

SITE NEWS: Industry's first daily leaderboard tracks most anticipated upcoming games.

by

GameSpot today launched GameSpot Fifty (G|FIFTY), a first-of-its-kind daily leaderboard that tracks consumer demand for upcoming games. Updated every 24 hours, the database lets you know what the most anticipated games are, from the moment they are announced until they finally are released.

G|FIFTY uses a proprietary algorithm that analyzes factors like page views and video streams across CBS Interactive's gaming portals, including GameSpot and Giant Bomb. Search data from the web is also tracked, and the algorithm is weighted to more accurately predict results.

Activision's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is currently the top game overall, followed by Battlefield Hardline, Far Cry 4, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Destiny. We're expecting a bevy of new game announcements next week at E3, so keep your eye on G|FIFTY for immediate analysis of what's trending.

GameSpot is going all-out this year at E3. We're planning more than 50 hours of live video programming, including full coverage of the major press conferences from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, as well as developer interviews, news coverage, and more. For more on GameSpot's E3 plans, be sure to check out our dedicated E3 hub.

This thing is broken or developed poorly. It doesn't list Rainbow Six Siege even though it was the best part of Ubisoft's conference. There's no possible way "Enemy Front" or "Amplitude" are more anticipated than R6.

lol... Now hype has it's own website.

GS could have put a nice sales tracker website, that would make more sense.

I wonder if I'm dyslexic or something; I keep seeing "FTFY".

Isn't this just a feedback loop for advertisers to gauge the speed of their pre-release hype trains?  Oh well.  They pay the bills.

The funniest thing about this list to all of you complaining and whining about CoD and BF is that chances are you helped get these games to the top of the list by t.rolling articles about them lol. Reap what you sow. I for one am not shocked both are at the top. And honestly, who cares that they are?

Edit: And are you kidding me GameSpot? The word t.rolling triggers a pending post?

so a fancy name for the top 10 that has been on this website for at least 10 years?

This seems really cool. I'd love to get a bit more info on how the order is calculated?

Typical boring list.

How in the hell is Call of Duty even still relevant enough to be on that list, let alone #1. There are far better games coming out.

I'm capable of formulating my own individual opinions  so I don't really care for these things

CoD and BF are in the top of the list...well...everyone has their own their own taste, just mine doesnt follow their preference

Interestingly, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was something they never talked about on The Lobby's E3 hype show. Good job ignoring the most anticipated game.

Or I'll just visit The Witcher 3 page 53 times a day.....
Oiii I'm so alone here.

I just realized that the majority of the world population has sh.it.ty tastes.

@meatz666 There are plenty of sales charts out there - this is specifically aimed at tracking interest in games up to the point of release.

@wallacom COD has made gaming become widely popular amongst "Bro culture". Jocks who beat me up in highscool for being a video game nerd are now the highest consumers of video games. Funny how that works eh?

@BrunoBRS Not really, this only tracks upcoming games - once a game is released it won't appear on the list.

@LikeAWass Thanks - while we're not releasing the exact algorithm i can say that it looks at all the different ways people engage with a game on the site (articles, videos etc) and weights them up or down based on how much intent/interest it shows in the game. For example searching for the title in the search box is weighted as a more important action than viewing a news article.

@Gum_Bercules Of course, this is not a "best games list", it's a "world hype list", nothing you can do against people's mediocrity.

@Gum_Bercules Are you living in a bubble? Call of Duty, like it or not, is one of the biggest franchises in the world. Probably right behind GTA.

@freedomzealot There is no way everyone can keep up with every game. Giving us a list of 50 most anticipated gives us a head start on many games.

@mondoben @LikeAWass Thanks for getting back to me. I'm super impressed; the fact you've put this much thought into it and not just made a "which page gets the most hits" is fantastic. I especially love that example you gave.

I'm going to be interested to see how certain events affect a game's interest such as a new trailer. Are there any plans to extend this such as making a timeline for each game's interest? Even something like a simple graph with their position in the fifty on the Y axis could be really cool.

Anyway congratulations to everyone who contributed and thanks a bunch - i'll be checking it regularly .

@Dannystaples14

Take out all the crap "indie" games its pretty easy actually.

@oflow I assume, at minimum, the number of followers for each game dictates the interest level.

EDIT: There is info about it several comments below.
