GameSpot Asia Beat Episode 7: 16-Bit Blast Processing Sega Madness

We head back to the '90s, talking shop about the Sega Megadrive (Genesis to you North Americans) and a fraction of its influential library.

This week's episode is pretty special. With the anniversary of the North American release of the Sega Megadrive/Genesis closing in next week, we figured it's time we pay tribute to the 16-bit console that shaped our tastes in gaming. Or at the very least, entertain our yet-to-be-matured minds.

Join me, GameSpot Asia's Randolph Ramsay, and SGCafe's Sim Cheng Kai as we wax on about nostalgia and a time when a blue hedgehog coexisted with 7-Up mascots, marsupials with rocket packs, and Batman. Also, we cram in some present-day talk about Time Travelers, Persona 4 Arena, and Phantasy Star Online 2.

Download the podcast here. What's your favorite Sega Megadrive/Genesis game? How did you get your console in the first place? Do you think Sonic 3 is overrated? Discuss and share your thoughts on the comments box below.

Thanks for listening; I feel like putting on Streets of Rage 2 again just because Yuzo Koshiro's music is the megabomb.

Intro Song: "Penpal"by Anamanaguchi

Intermission Songs: "Keepin' The Groove" by Yuzo Koshiro, "Ring Rink" by Tomoko Sasaki, and "Fighting Back" by Toshiharu Yamanishi.

'fraction of its influential history' There's an understatement. When ARE they going to start ports of the non-English goods?

Favorite titles back then was Last Battle(Fist of the North Star), Revenge of Shinobi, Thunder Force II / III, Alex Kid, ESWAT, Golden Axe, Sonic. Think those were from the early years.  Played lots of SEGA titles afterwards too.

I had all the SEGA consoles from the Master System to the Dreamcast. My first RPG was the original Phantasy Star on the Master System. When I used to play my SEGA Genisis and my cousin from Ohio would come down, we would play Golden Axe, Fogotten World and the original EA NHL game.

Favorite game was Phantasy Star II, expensive as it was. I got the console December of 1989 after salivating over it since it was announced. I still have a lot of the  advertisements for the console (your world will never be the same) and a lot of the magazines where they first covered the then upcoming console and it's flagship title; the incredible Ghouls'n Ghosts. Of course i still have the original version of the console and the original box. I had more fun with the Genesis than any console before or since. For me the golden age of gaming. The last console I purchased was Dreamcast, when SEGA bowed out of console gaming so did I.

Favorite Genesis game?  I'd probably have to go with Streets of Rage, but pretty much anything with Yuzo Koshiro music was good.  And then, of course, Sonic 1 and 2, Road Rash 1-3, Madden 92-93, Flashback, Mutant League Football, Phantasy Star 4, and Shining Force 1 and 2.

How did I get my Genesis?  I actually sold my Suzuki DS 80 dirt bike.  I know that sounds stupid, and in hindsight, it was, but I was 12 years old, and after playing a demo of Sonic the Hedgehog at the mall, I would have sold my right leg to get a Genesis.  At that time, the Sega Genesis was the coolest thing in the whole world.

Was Sonic 3 overrated?  Yes.  Sonic 2 blew my mind by being even better than the first.  Sonic 3 was just... meh.

Sega:  BRING BACK STREETS OF RAGE!!!

You can play Streets of Rage on Steam, as well as Phantasy Star II-IV, Golden Axe I-III and some others. Each game only costs $3.
