GamersFirst gets MMOG Fallen Earth

Free-to-play label behind APB: Reloaded scoops up postapocalyptic massively multiplayer online game and plans to launch it by Q4 with new business model.

Last November, free-to-play label GamersFirst picked up All Points Bulletin after its developer Realtime Worlds collapsed. The label then rebranded it APB: Reloaded and made it free to play.

Fallen Earth is rising as a free-to-play game by the end of the year.

Now, the outfit has acquired the postapocalyptic action-oriented massively multiplayer online game Fallen Earth. All 12 Fallen Earth employees will join GamersFirst's Reloaded Productions and continue to work on the game's forthcoming Alpha County expansion.

Over the next five months, Fallen Earth will transition into a free-to-play game, joining the likes of EverQuest II and Lord of the Rings Online. When the game does go free to play, gamers will be able to access every zone and instance in the title for free, but they can choose to pay for items or other conveniences from the Fallen Earth store.

Further, players who continue to pay their subscription through the five-month transition period will earn "Veteran Rewards" when the game relaunches. These include the ability to purchase a lifetime membership for the price of an existing subscription, as well as unnamed veteran-only in-game items. Fallen Earth is expected to be up and running as a free-to-play game by the fourth quarter of this year.

For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review of Fallen Earth.

[CORRECTION] This article originally stated that GamersFirst had acquired Fallen Earth LLC in addition to the Fallen Earth game and incorrectly named the Reloaded Productions team. We regret the errors.

@gbrading Lol save it? Gamerfist will pump money into the games and try get players to play them but are failing BIG TIME when we are talking anti-cheat/hack, they just dont know how to keep the games as clean as possible which is more like letting a game suffer and die slowly

Is your Massively Multiplayer game dying? GamesFirst will take care of it, and try to stop it from fading away entirely.

@Ovirew You know...it probably does mainly just due the amount of people on the screen and the rendering distance so then again maybe...hmmm. When I played it it ran smooth but it seriously looked like I was playing on a ps2 haha.

@Arghyeeho I never did play it the first time around, no. I don't play games with monthly fees since firstly, I can't really afford it, and secondly, I never feel like I get my money's worth. I really wanted to play though... it seemed like the perfect MMO concept. Which, judging by how hardcore it failed the first time, and how... it's not doing so hot the second time... I guess it's just a good idea on paper. Chances are, I'll leave the game installed, and play after 6 months or so, after they've had time to iron out the kinks. If they ever do, that is...

One more thing by seeing the things happening in Knights Online, APB and 9Dragons... Their entire staff is incompetant and their GM's suck cat balls ... LOL... Balls to this company....

Gamersfirst is the crappiest company and this game will have no future with these publishers... Fail....

@frosty192 Someone I talked to online had the game and told me it had high system requirements. Idk if it does or not, but I was under the impression it did because of that.

Fallen Earth is a good mmo, I just cant stick to mmos, they get boring after a month or 2. I hope they don't wipe the accounts after the transition I would like to give this game a try again with my old character.

GamersFirst is such a big company now, they should really thank Knight Online and all the babashoppers who spent thousands of dollars on it.

Well I feel sorry for whoever plays that game. Gamersfirst really messes up games. Like APB leased weapons and have to pay 60 bucks for a gun you keep forever. No thanks.

I think this is an opportunity for fallen earth. It does have a well thought out back story that is actually pretty compelling. I only played it for 2 months and found there wasn't enough cooperative play. Maybe this transition will give the game a second lease on life. As Landsharkk points out DDO (which I play a lot) thrived after going F2P.

@chaosbrigade How is the F2P model inferior? It allows everybody to try the game without the risk of wasting $50 on a subscription, and there's less pressure on the devs to compete with AAA titles and make their own game.

,,also in world of tanks super overopwered shells for real monety only, 1-2 hits from tier 7 tank, you are dead through 250mm armor, also very unbalanced. all soviet tanks is like you playing Easy mode, american tanks Medium, german tanks Hard, here is advice for noobs, you dont need even cheats play soviet tanks IS beat everything :D

APB is huge bug with overpowered sniper class, after some patch cant enter game anymore, crash all the time. anyway dnt like it, too bugged and unbalanced.. fallen earrt as f2p shoul be friendly for f2p players , if they implement some super stuff for real cash then not much people play.. Allods online story, those who play are sick donors, cash shop OP items ruin game, World of tanks different story, you just cant play game for real if you not donor ,tier 8 last weapon and up tank shells price is very huge, you need to play week to collect money then you can spend money for shells 1 day, failed f2p games

Fallen Earth is awesome and this is good news. It's not as actiony as APB, but if you like advancement and crafting happening while you're not playing, this is the game for you. Tons to do, tons of ways to build your character, and gameplay is fun and addicting.

@jedediahpelland I don't know but I've always hated the FTP model and would much rather pay a monthly fee and just earn my items. I'm a very cheap person when it comes to money so I'm surprised I don't like FTP more. Well network quality is usually better on monthly paid for games to.

Fallen Earth always sounded original to me, but I heard it has fairly high system requirements.

@Reyveign Did you not play APB under Real Time Worlds? The beta in that was even worse, and the matchmaking was terrible. The matchmaking now isn't anything to write home about, but it's still lightyears more fun than it was before, IMO. Although, technically the game really can't be considered in beta if they're already selling cash items.. And the game is just so poorly coded to begin with, it's rather sickening.

i feel a little angry that fallen earth only had 12 employees working on it, considering i spent years prior to its release frequently checking the site to see any updates on it. imagine my disappointment wen it turned out to be a not-bad-but-not-so-great MMO. even more disappointing now because i wish i knew there was only 12 employees working on it before i started to follow this game religiously

Might have to pay a visit to my old account. I got bored because my real life mates play WoW, and didnt wanna give up that...plus i never put in enough hours because i work and go outside lol Good game though, enjoyed it a lot.

This looks pretty interesting, might give it a go. I really dont mind these FTP games, or the ingame store. You really dont have to use the store in a lot of these games. I just absoulutley refuse to pay for a game then pay a monthly subscription. No game in my book warrents a monthly subscription. I would much rather just pay for some extra content by my own choice then pretty much dedicate myself to a game by paying monthly for it. I think all MMOs should follow the FTP model.

Not liking the direction GamersFirst is taking with APB... not to mention it's the buggiest, and most unstable beta I've ever played. Patches don't seem to be doing much, either. And what about these $60 perm duration guns? If that's how they're handling their new titles, I plan on steering clear from now on....

chaosbrigade
chaosbrigade

@Landsharkk You can't deny the painful truth: Only MMOG that are failing in P2P model will go for F2P. LOTR turned to F2P after its subscriptions fell off the cliff, DDO was the same, APB went under as a title in the P2P model and it is now F2P. Fallen Earth is the same. Only AAA high quality MMOG can compete in an P2P model, those who can't had to resort to the inferior, and yes, different business model that is F2P.

Man any MMO where you can buy items really defeats half the point of playing. MMOs are about the conquest for progression.

Landsharkk
Landsharkk

APB Reloaded is awesome fun. I might check out Fallen Earth if it's F2P. Btw, a majority of the MMO's that go free to play actually end up making more money with the item/cash shops then they do with monthly subscriptions. DDO is a great example of this. So, no, dying MMO's don't go F2P, it's just a different business model.

When the game originally came out I wast interested, but would never had payed for it. I'll be sure to give this one a try. Meanwhile I suggest you guys download the GamersFirst Client. I wouldn't suggest many of their games but APB: Reloaded is amazing. They're doing a great job taking care of Realtime World's baby with updates and the like. I've never come across any hackers. It's extremley balanced. ATM, there's like nothing in the cash shop. The customization is unparalleled. And it's very unique. Go check it out. I play on the Joker (US EAST) server. My character is Nickprovs to any interested
