Gamers have spent 1 billion hours playing Minecraft Xbox 360

Microsoft reveals players have racked up equivalent of over 114,000 years of gameplay in 4J Studios' sandbox game.

Gamers have spent more than 1 billion hours playing Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition since the game launched in May, Microsoft announced today through its PlayXBLA blog.

One billion hours is equivalent to over 114,00 years.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition recently crossed 6 million units sold. At $20 per down, the game has now generated $120 million since launch.

Sales and play time are likely to increase further, as a disc-based Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is coming to United States retailers on April 30. This will be followed by launches in Australia, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan in early June.

To anyone who contributed to that number at a rate of more than 5 hours a week

Go get a life, you people make me sick. I am tired of being tagged as a "gamer" when it means being lumped in with you sad pathetic bastards.

Excluding the fact that I personally find minecraft boring as hell, the sheer fact that an individual will spend 15 straight hours digging a virtual hole blows my mind and brings me sadness over the state of the human race.

"Microsoft reveals players have racked up equivalent of over 114,000 years of gameplay in 4J Studios' sandbox game."

I can't help myself but this isn't 4J Studios' sandbox game. It was made by Mojang. 4J Studios only helped to port it and make it work on the Xbox 360 with some gameplay tweaks here and there but it isn't their sandbox game.  Just wanted to get it off my chest.

M$ made a best exclusive deal with Mojang :P

I used to play this game with a buddy of mine, split screen. Now I bought it for myself about a week ago, this game is gold, it gives me the same feeling I had when I started gaming 15 years ago.

Seriously I don't see any game play in this, why are most mmo games nowadays have this same problem? I'm going back to age of wushu, at least that game has depth.

I do not agree with people here saying "time could have spent on something better". With that logic, then playing ANY video game would be a waste of time. Video games are made to be for relaxing AFTER you have worked hard during the day, so spending time on games like this is not bad. Minecraft is a deep experience and requires a lot of time. I spent a lot of time on the Xbox 360 version and it is definitely fun, especially if you have a great creative mind. Saying "you should do better things with your time" is nonsense. I have been productive outside this game as well. I have worked on my digital art, comics, animations, and other personal tasks while playing this game. Like I said, playing games like these is just for "enjoyment" and relaxing after working hard on everything else. I disagree with it being a waste of time, because the creativity of it CAN lead to something productive in the real world.

Here is what I have made in Minecraft. This took months to make.

Better to play Minecraft than to play with Daddy's gun collection...

(Daddy give those guns away)

Hey, at least those one billion hours were used creatively.

Those one billion hours could've have been wasted on Call of Duty or Vampire Rain.

I don't know what's so fun of hard working constructing games :p

These kinds of aggregated numbers are so meaningless. It's like saying "Humans spend 48 billion hours sleeping every day!"

Woop dee doo. I'd rather hear how many hours each player plays on average each day. Or the average total play time of all the players.

Damn if so many people liked the blatantly inferior version I only wish I could let them play the real version on the PC and see how much fun they have. Still good to see so many people finding fun in something that's at least unique

And I spent more than 2 billion hours playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles on Sega Genesis, take that!

Now imagine if they were on the PC instead. Those mods add weeks of playtime.

EDIT: This isn't meant to be a LOLXBOX post. More people enjoying a game is never a bad thing.

Imagine if we put this kind of time into something meaningful to humanity, we'd all be living on Mars by now..

No, what's sad is that many people sat on their ass for that long digging virtual holes.

@dominoodle Uh, it's not meaningless, it's called MARKETING.

Kinda like how certain mattress manufacturers say stuff like, "More people choose our mattress to sleep on than any other!"

You see? Marketing.

@dominoodle Well if it is the 2nd most game played on 360 month after month you should know it gets played a lot. I play at least 1 hour every other day.

@B-boy I thought I spent A LOT of time playing Battlefield 3, but when I looked at the time thingy, it said 26h :O So basically, I lost only one day to that game! It was a good time, though.

@wildamnesia You must have a shitty life. It's always good to have both sides of reality and fantasy. Psych 101

@wildamnesia This is Minecraft we're talking about here, not Second Life. Minecraft is about building and digging, it's not a virtual life simulator.

@wildamnesia And I am happy to say I have a life too, but still enjoy creating kingdoms in a fantasy one as well.

@bielzabob No we wouldn't. 1 billion hours sounds like a lot, but that is spread over MANY people, who were playing in their down time. Unless you are suggesting that after people are done with work and school, they go an do more work so that we can achieve something as a species, this would not happen. These hours would have been spent relaxing anyway, they just happened to be spent on Minecraft during those hours.

Syrlink

@bielzabob Yeah but it would be a really boring life on Mars...although I don't really see the fun in Minecraft honestly

Syrlink
Syrlink

@johnny_pay @Syrlink @bielzabob Not sure which movie u watched but other than the 3 boobed lady looked pretty desolate and full of angry mutants (original total recall not Colin Farell crapfest)

And actually I just meant that if we dedicated all our time into something "productive", our lives would be pretty boring in general.
