Game Hero Poll Concerns

Community News - Update about poll concerns.

by

Hi everyone,

We just wanted to give you an update after a day of discussions with our tech team around the voting.

Vote rigging falls into two rough buckets. The first is rallying tons of users to a cause, in favor of – or against – a character. We allow and support this. All of our users are encouraged to do this, whether they want to express their true opinion or just do something silly. The best way to combat this is to fight fire with fire, and if your character is in a tough matchup, get out the vote! The forces of evil are limited in number!

The other type of vote rigging, automated voting, is something we are actively monitoring and still have no reason to believe is happening on a scale large enough to impact the outcomes of contests to date.

With all this in mind, it's clear that groups of users have banded together to influence the outcome of contests, particularly Master Chief vs. Bub & Bob. We can't and won't stop a large number of users from using their votes just because they want to do something other than pick their actual favorites. On the other hand, we're monitoring the chatter around automated voting, and so far we don't see anything that we think works. We, unfortunately, have to remain quiet on the types of fraud we see and how we combat it, because the less information the fraudsters have, the better. I know that last part is frustrating. Believe me, we'd love to prove that we know what's up instead of saying, "Just trust us."
If we do notice widespread fraud, we'll admit to it, and we'll do something about. So, get out there and continue to pioneer for the remaining favorites!

Thanks for the update, hopefully the kiddies can shut up now and just deal with it.

@ dentedhalo, Dude, which government agency do you think is responsible for the cover up on this one? NSA? CIA? NAACP? I bet aliens landed in Mesopotamia thousands of years ago, built the pyramids (Egypt, Mexico, and Cambodia, thank you), and left secret triggers to be activated this week so gamespot would record fraudulent votes in this contest. Or the gamespot administrators could all be sleeper cylons. OR, it could just be totally lame that enough kids thought it would be funny to vote against the Chief and cause chaos in the brackets of all reasonable people. You might want to take a walk and cool down on this one a little bit. I agree that it's weak that the voting has taken a ridiculous turn, but I don't think its because gamespot is actively encouraging fascist tactics. Campaigning for votes is allowed. They do it every day. In America.

I think the b&b fans who have commented here are MISSING THE POINT!!!! no1 is saying that there arent genuine votes for them but its ridiculous to say that they are more popular than characters who are still selling games today..... fame goes hand in hand with that because characters are usually more famous because they are popular. If you guys want to believe that b&b are actually better than MC and sonic then thats fine but at least try to balance that with facts rather than just saying you like them so everyone else does..... sales figures for either sonic or MC dwarf b&b so its difficult to believe that they would win without some sort of dodgy dealings..... with the number of votes they got in rounds 1 & 2 they could easily take out metroid...... i HATE b&b at this point (despite loving their game when i was younger) but id love to see them take out metroid and see how the nintendo fans feel about that!

Thank you for the update on the current situation... I hope this competition will be as fair as possible.

I have voted for round 2, but when I press on the My bracket, it does not give the correct points that i should obtain. cheers

picked B&B btw people stop voting for something if the ONLY reason you're voting for it is because it's more FAMOUS and not on the actual quality or details of the character just makes the rich richer and the poor poorer votes wise that's the kind of crap that leads to massive fanboy/girlism I can also pretty much agree and figure that vote spam exists on both sides enough to balance out and that B&B has enough reasons to legitly win too bad the majority of people are going to say d00d mario is all famous and stuff no1 heard of other guy that CLEARLY must mean hes a better character /sarcasm the only mario i've actually liked that has personality is the RPG versions of him (ironically, the 2 dimensional paper mario) other than that, i think many characters deserve better

LOL AT FANBOY RAGE. But seriously, I am pretty sure both sides on the sonic vs bub and bob thing have been vote spammed.

I wish that I had a large supply of bub and bob plush toys or stuffed animals, so I could vent my frustration at their characters by setting fire to them or tossing them into traffic or feeding them to angry cats. That isn't a threat or a dis or anything, I just think it would make me feel better.

Bub and Bob put out several fantastic games back in the day, and I still throw several quarters into Puzzle Bobble when I see a machine. Sonic, while he had some fantastic games in the 90s, has consistently failed to deliver a comparable gaming experience since, and has declined as a franchise in a way no other gaming mascot has. It's sad, but at least Bub and Bob retired when they were through, instead of pumping out shovelware for year after year. And Halo... I don't think I even need to say anything.

I picked Bub and Bob because they are a proper old skool character and Bust A Move is one of the best puzzle games out there, they deserved their wins of the overrated Master Chief and a Sonic that hasn't produced a good game in years. If Gamespot reviews the result because of a few Master Chief and Sonic fans whining away because they lost to a better character then it's just ridiculous and bowing to the vocal minority whose character lost!

Thank you for the excellent update, Jody. I, for one, did pick Bub and Bob for many reasons, which none need to be expressed here, but there are most definitely fans of B&B out there. I feel, at least for Round 1, B&B won legitimately and many MC fanboys need to realize that there are people who actually do enjoy B&B over MC and stop whining because they thought B&B were just there for a couple giggles. MC fans (and many other fans) should also look at the fact that if their character won by legitimate votes, than maybe there is something to B&B after all and that they aren't just joke characters, but very much loved characters.

I might be wrong but isnt massing your supporters to wipe out the opposition the same thing that dictators do (i know its hardly the same level of importance and im not trying to equate this poll to a dictatorship.... just before im jumoed on) In the end gamespots stated opinion supports tactics used by the worst and vilest motivations of people.... i find it reprehensible that gamespot would condone this kind of behaviour in any form.... it promotes puerility, childishness and vindictiveness!

Personally, I think any form of vote rigging is lame and destroys any legitimacy a contest has. That includes what gamespot calls "rallying tons of users to a cause."

To be honest, I chose MC in my bracket, but voted for B&B. I haven't played Halo, but have played Bubble Bobble, so it makes sense. I also wouldn't stoop so low as to saying it is fraud. Those who say so are obviously just not seeing the big picture. However, I still find it baffling that B&B defeated Sonic. Oh well, c'est la vie. Bub and Bob are awesome anyway. And such a clever name (BUBble BOBble).

Bug & Bob deserved the win. Master Chief is cool and everything, but he doesn't do anything in the games. In my opinion someone who just stands there and the other characters advance the plot in a story doesn't deserve to win. Anyways good article.

Thanks, once again, for creating this post, Jody. It seems there are still naysayers here, but I still believe you guys and don't believe there has been any serious degree of fraudulent activity. I, for one, have been a long-standing GS member, and despite picking MC in my bracket, I voted for Bub & Bob. I've stated my many reasons before, so I won't get into it again, but it's disconcerting that there are several people that call themselves gamers yet don't understand that there would be people that would prefer Bub & Bob over "MS icon" Master Chief. If there is any fanboyism going on, it's from the MS camp... whining.

I completely agree with neoman on the whole issue. I've played Halo 1 and 2, and like Master chief, but still voted for Bub & Bob remembering the countless hours and quarters I spent blowing bubbles with them :D . I'm sure there are many more like me. So why does it have to be cheating when they win instead of master chief ?

@deesnutts25 I am not a big Halo fan myself, but Master Chief is certainly a more iconic character than Bub and Bob. I got my gaming start on the Space Invaders, Pac-Man and the Atari 2600 and remember that era of games quite well. I have no idea who those two are. The people on either side with nothing better to do than bash the other system need to get lives. I don't have or want a PS3 at the moment, but that has as much to do with not wanting invest in blu-rays when the future of the format is still very much in doubt as it does with Sony or MS. For me the 360 is a better package. I'd rather get 6 games for my 360 right now than invest in the hardware for the limited number of Sony exclusives that appeal to me. If Sony starts delivering the games, I will certainly consider picking up a PS3. I am also intrigued by their motion sensing controller. Both systems have strengths and weaknesses. The fighting about them is just silly in my opinion.

People are taking this too seriously. This whole Game Hero voting is just for fun. I agree with GameSpot's stance on this "issue."

@starbead if you pay attention to forum posts and such you will notice a lot more hate for Sony than M$ on this site. Chief lost due to the face people thought halo sucked, end story. I for one am one of those people that owned all 3 halo games, yet could only stand to play them for 15 minutes before getting bored of running around killing the same thing over and over again. Don't even get me started on Halo MP if I had a choice of hearing 13 yr old kid cry or selling the game, I'd sell the game and XBL hack proof, yeah right there are so many hacks for the halo games its not funny.

Come on, Master Chief loses to the two little dragons of a game that came out back in the mid 80's? This is a joke gone bad.

Bub and Bob beat Master Chief, and last time I checked Cloud was losing to Mac. This bracket has FAILED. There is no reason to vote anymore except to screw over characters that you hate.

There's no getting my vote out or trying to persuade others to vote as I would. I haven't played a good portion of the games that are home to the characters in this tourney so I didn't vote. I'm still curious to see who'll win though,

Jody & Ricardo I know you all have been hard at this, and it's a shame such a cool idea gets ruined (in a small way) by a few. But it's still a great feature, and fun to see what happens.

Read ANY article about the XBOX 360 or 360 exclusive games and you will have your answer as to why Master Chief lost. There are a lot of people who have nothing better to do than sit around attacking anything and everything MS. Personally, I made my bracket and voted based solely on which character I felt had the most impact/influence. It is just more fun that way for me. But there are a lot of PS3 fanboys on this site who live for the cheap thrill of bashing MS. Personally, I prefer to give the attention they deserve- NONE!!! But if you are feeling angry about it, email all your friends and boot every Sony exclusive (or once exclusive) character from the contest. We all know that it is likely to come down to Mario v Link anyway, so have fun with the early rounds.

i dont see whats the thing about master chief losing. i love master chief and own the trilogy, but when i remember myself playing bubble bobble on the arcades, and playing puzzle bubble and bustamove all my life until now i just think its unfair if id choose master chief as favorite. probably more people thought the same way. i dont see why it has to be cheating of some sort

I myself picked Master Chief in my bracket simply because I thought he would clean house up to a point, but I find it quite hilarious how he lost against Bub & Bob :P

i'm one of the few that believe there is no auto rigging going on. people are just sore losers because the fan favorite lost, master chief.

Those guys would love an official acknowledgement that their plan to ruin the contest is a success. It's important that they do not get that until there's a way to deal with it.
