The nominees for the fifth annual Game Critics Awards have been announced. The Game Critics Awards highlight the best software and hardware displayed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. This year, 40 judges from a variety of game magazines, online sites, and mainstream media have nominated 65 games and hardware items. The top five games, each of which received three nominations, are Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II, and Star Wars Galaxies. The winners from each category will be announced on June 18, 2001.

"This year's list of nominees reflects an industry that is pushing the boundaries of what we expect from interactive gaming," said Aaron John Loeb, chairman of the Game Critics Award Committee. "With software and peripherals for the PC, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Xbox, and PlayStation 2, the nominees show that game makers are producing brilliant entertainment on every platform."

Microsoft led the list of publishers, gathering 12 total nominations, while Electronic Arts and Nintendo are tied for second place with 11 nominations. LucasArts received seven, Activision received six, and Sony Computer Entertainment received five nominations.
