Galaga swoops onto VC

NES port of arcade space shooter leads trio of titles now available for download on Wii; Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Bravoman also out now.

by

The Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console is three titles stronger today, with offerings from the Nintendo Entertainment System, TurboGrafx-16, and Genesis. The most popular of the three hearkens back to the days of the coin-op arcade, as the NES version of Galaga is now available for 500 Wii Points ($5). Galaga sees spaceships blasting away insectoid enemies and features the risk/reward option of having a fighter captured in hopes of doubling the players' firepower.

The 1990 TurboGrafx-16 edition of Bravoman also makes its way to the VC today. For 600 Wii Points ($6), gamers can suit up as the justice-dealing Bravoman. A combination of beat-'em-up and platforming gameplay, Bravoman sees the titular hero defending the village of Nitta against Dr. Bomb. The game's 22 levels are split between above-ground action and underwater shooting.

Before there was Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega was betting on a mascot named Alex Kidd to move titles. One of the last games to feature the brown-haired boy was Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle for the Sega Genesis, which makes its way to the VC for 800 Wii Points ($8). Gamers play as Kidd, who will attempt to rescue his father on Planet Paperock by jumping and fighting through 11 levels.

Alex Kidd is great. But Galaga??? WOW...I LOVED that game for as long as I remember playing it.

I used to love Alex Kidd. I had one built into my Sega Master System (Miracle World). I may have to purchase that one. :)

I can't BELIEVE people still have strengh to argue which Rare games will show up on VC and which won't. DKC games obviously will, Rare may have done those, but DK intectual property belongs to Nintendo. PD probably won't, since it's RARE's brand. I stray away from any comments regarding the Battletoads brand. I mean, that series is buried for such a long time that I have no idea to whom it belongs to (there was that Tradewest or something involved as well, but I have no idea of what was the involvement nor what has become of that). On the news at hand: Alex Kidd sucked even when I was a kid. Never heard of Bravoman. Galaga is awesome, but there are thousands of cheaper ways to play it these days. Lame.

Some one needs to talk to the guy in charge of choosing the games becoming downloadable and set things straight, we want certain games not all the other crap that also came out at the time, sure someone will want it, but most of it are garbage, we would rather have the good ones to come out like EB, and PM, as well as SMBRPG. i always wanted to play the goonies 2 again that was back on the nes.

Why are SNES and N64 games so few and far between? And where is my Zelda II, Castlevania, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Super Metroid & Super Mario RPG?

Galaga is already available in lots of compilations. And both it and Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (as well as a host of other Alex Kidd games) are avaliable on GameTap.

Wow what a sucky week for the Wii VC. I am glad at least super paper mario is out this week. They should have released mario 2 or 3 this week would have been great timing with Super paper mario out.

It was said before that when big Wii titles would be released, low end VC titles would follow in the same couple weeks. Nothing new there. Galaga though, wouldn't of charged more than 100pts for it though. Its on almost every compilation out there.

Makes sense that the games coming out this week wouldnt be the best(to most people) they have a very strong Wii game coming out and releasing good VC games would only limit the purchases of both.

"Boo! Really though this should have been THE week to release Paper Mario...duh. A nice move missed by Nintendo there" for some reason...i don't think releasing paper mario the same day that super paper mario comes out would be a good idea for nintendo.

"5 bucks to play Galaga ?!?!?!? Nintendo is a bunch of thieves. They should be giving games that are 25 years old, out for free. Nintendo is almost as greedy as micro$oft." lol, whatever. but that does remind me...didn't nintendo say something about doing promotional things with offering free game downloads if you buy a wii game or something like that. i hope they actually do that.

It's an okay week. Not good or bad, just okay. And the abundance of shmups on the Wii is awesome. I hope we eventually see the SNES version of Space Invaders. Galaga and Space Invaders set the stage for what shooters would become. (I'd recommend getting one of the Namco Museum compilations on the Gamecube though, since they both have an arcade-perfect port of the game)

Galaga was alright. It was fun for a while but got old pretty quickly. It was only good for long road trips.

Alex Kidd is the best of a weak lot. I liked Alex Kidd's Genny game and beat it several times in 1990. Bravoman is another of those games that shouldn't have seen the light of day and Galaga for the NES is no substitute for the Galaga on any compilation disc or XBLA.

"jonzilla_basic BORIIIINNNGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" It can't be that boring if you took the time to post that awfully long and deep post... Anyhoo, I'm not sure about these ones, never actually played them, except Alex Kidd which I didn't particularly enjoy... scary fat child playing paper rock scissors is quite scary to my mind :|

Why do I still see people asking for 007 and Perfect dark? THEY AREN'T COMING!!! MS, if you remember, launched with a little game called Perfect Dark Zero. Thats because MS has the license for this game. Goldeneye 007 is an even stickier situation and will never see the light of day (different companies hold different licenses that all apply to this title). And if you have a 360 and were hoping for some classic rare games, you're still out of luck. The 360 cannot legally emulate a console like N64, SNES, or NES. That's why they 1) get arcade ports of titles and 2) had to remake Symphony of the Night from the ground up. So rare games that get digitally distributed will be... well rare. DKC is an example but thats because Nintendo owns DK and probably payed off Rare's small portion cuz they knew it was going to make them some bank on the VC market.

guess we'll have to settle for playing Super Paper Mario for now. Really LivingDeadNinja: Nintendo is not going to release good VC games on a day when a high profile title hits, especially one whose audience is the same as Super Paper Mario. Nintendo is doing what they should, save the big guns to fill in the gaps where there isn't much going on. Expect big things in Summer, probably paper Mario will come then, when they've given people ample time to play this one.

I wish Nintendo would start releasing arcade ports rather than just console ports. It has the power it should start using it.
