Galaga shoots onto Euro VC

Three more titles now available for download, including the classic arcade space shooter.

European Wii owners have another three titles to download from the Virtual Console. In the first, Galaga, players control a spaceship moving left and right at the bottom of the screen, and shoot at the oncoming hordes of aliens. Different colours of aliens are worth varying amounts of points, and gamers can advance to the next level when all of them have been defeated.

The one- or two-player classic space-themed shooter was originally released in 1981, and has been available on a variety of different platforms over the years--and it can now be downloaded for 500 Wii points.

Also now available is Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, originally launched on the Super Nintendo in 1992, the platform game is the sequel to titles Ghosts 'N Goblins, and Ghouls 'N Ghosts. Players control the Knight Arthur, who is battling to save his girlfriend, Princess Prin-Prin. Super Ghouls and Ghosts costs 800 Wii points.

Finally, TurboGrafx title Double Dungeons, originally released in 1990, is also up for grabs. One or two players explore 22 dungeons, killing enemies and earning gold and experience points in classic RPG style. Double Dungeons weighs in at 600 Wii points.

Better yet, Halo05, just download MAME for your computer system, and get the ROMs for free. They're no longer protected by copyright, since they lack anything marketable, and you get the ORIGINAL arcade experience, On the other hand, it's a way to "inspire" people to micropayments without doing any REAL work.......

Wow, how many ports of Galaga do I already own? Off the top of my head I'd say three. I can't believe Nintendo wants five dollars for this. I could get the PSX Namco Museum Collection volume 3 (the one with Galaga and Ms. Pacman) for about that much, what a bargain Nintendo! Keep it up, maybe you can help collapse the videogame industry that you revitalized over twenty years ago.

I had the NES Galaga cart when I was younger. This was the only game that I owned that was almost EXACTLY like the arcade. It really doesn't matter what version they use for this. I do wish that they used the arcade version of Xevious though. The NES version was AWFUL but the arcade version was pretty good.

Shut up ReggieNametaker! Nobody making you play these games. For us classic gamer, it's on hell of a thrill to be able to play the old games we regret getting rid of!

Galaga and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts sound like great games, but as always, I wonder if the Virtual Console versions (i.e. 8/16-bit console ports) are as good as the original arcade versions they were based on.

Galaga? One of the worst ever?? Get back to your gaming roots, son, its a classic. Ghouls n' Ghosts is at a difficulty level that I wish existed in more games nowadays. The fact that it was brutally hard AND people kept going back for more is what made it superb. Too many games are waaaaay too easy for the cost now.

Galaga? Could they have picked a worse game? Easily one of the worst ever. Super G&G I remember as being unplayable because it was just too hard, not to mention you had to beat it twice to get a "true" ending. Princess Prin-Prin? I thought it was Guinevere? Double Dungeons? All I remeber about that is it was a really obscure RPG on the under-rated Turbo sysytem.

I'm confused... is it a port from the actual arcade game, or from one of the VC-friendly past consoles?
