G4 cancelling X-Play, Attack of the Show

[UPDATE] Source says network killing off all gaming related programming; tweets from employees signal changes are afoot; statement from company confirms both shows will end after 2012.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, G4 issued an official statement on the rumor. The company confirmed that X-Play and Attack of the Show will be canceled after 2012. Both shows will air original episodes through the end of the year, and will also feature memorable moments from their history.

The final X-Play and Attack of the Show episodes will feature guest hosts including John Barrowman, Michael Ian Black, Josh Myers, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, and Horatio Sanz joining regular hosts Candace Bailey, Sara Underwood, Morgan Webb, and Blair Herter.

The original story follows below

Television network G4 is cancelling all gaming-related programming, including X-Play and Attack of the Show, a source reportedly close to the situation told Kotaku. It is not clear if the shows will be canceled right away or last through the end of the year.

Tweets from G4 employees, including Attack of the Show host Candace Bailey and X-Play personality Blair Herter, suggest changes are afoot at the network.

"All great changes are preceded by chaos," Herter wrote. This was followed by comments from Bailey, stating, "Today is gonna be an interesting day" and "I'm so fortunate to work with the people I work with everyday [sic]."

This news follows a report from September that suggested G4 was changing directions. It is believed the network is moving away from gaming-related content and heading in a direction more reminiscent of men's magazine GQ.

Several high-profile G4 employees have left the network recently, including former Attack of the Show host and field reporter Kevin Pereira, as well as X-Play's outspoken talking head, Adam Sessler.

saw this coming about 5 years ago when X-play went from being a good review show doing on average 4 reviews an episode to barely doing any reviews and trying to be serious.

I don't foresee missing any of those things, G4 stopped offering anything of interest about 10 years ago.

It probably was the right descision.  Just doesn't seem like this whole "video game" thing is taking off.

oh wow. So it's a "Cops" channel now.

G4 has never been a good network. It has no true direction. They constantly repeat Cops, That Ninja show, and Cheaters. At least it was when I was last watching. X-Play and Attack of the Show were at one time great shows. But as Kevin and Adam became more and more full of themselves the shows suffered. Adam Sesslers rants about everything. And everybody who disagrees with him is stupid. The same goes for Kevin Pereira's I'm so cool and you're are all a bunch of pathetic losers act.

So I gave up on those shows a long time ago. I started coming to Gamestop for some of my gaming news. I also found The Electric Playground to be far superior than X-Play and AOTS. I found that on You Tube you could find several reliable game reviewers. like IGN. So I'm not going to miss either show. As for G4... well after being ZDTV, TechTV what's another name change going to do if they don't really invest in original programming.

Why are they canceling their most view shows? The only reason I would tune into their channel would be to watch game reviews and stay updated on technology. This is depressing that they are getting rid of the shows that I have been watching for years. I hope they make something to remember the good old hosts and the skits. If it was my opinion I would say they should get rid of cops and ninja warriors and replace that :D

I think you made the wrong decision G4.  Instead of cutting your ties with what made you unique in the first place, rehash it and go back to your roots.  Go back to the way it was before.

There was a time where I might have been sad about G4 going away, but at this point it really needs to die. That channel hasn't been about gaming or geek culture for the last 5 or 6 years. X-Play used to be hilarious with some of their skits, and AOTS was at least entertaining at times. Now, X-Play doesn't even try with their reviews anymore, and AOTS became an unwatchable bore. Munn, Sessler, and Pereira all left for their own good.

G4 is going to become Spike TV part 2 with endless Cops reruns and edited films. Hopefully someone has the money to make a real Tech/Geek network and not bastardize it over time. At least that douchebag Blair Herter will be out of a job.

Well, there goes the ONLY reasons that I even tune into that channel. Bye, bye G4. You won't be on the air much longer.

someone should just cancel G4 tv all together, they really did just shoot themselves in the foot now, only a matter of time before the station disappears all together

Yeah, I first read about this bit of news a few days ago on another Gaming WebSite.

I'm guessing that perhaps Adam Sessler & Kevin Pereira both left G4 earlier in 2012, because they saw the new direction the network was going to take, and they didn't like it. Or, maybe there were other factors involved in their decisions to leave: I don't really know.

Besides, it's the older classic G4TV/G4 TechTV Shows, which began from the early to mid 2000s, that were the really good ones. You know: CinemaTech, Blister, Filter, GPhoria, Icons, Game Makers, Ninja Warrior, Arena, X-Play, Cheat!, Pulse, G4TV.Com, Players, the Screen Savers, and even goofy Portal.

I know that the Internet is the primary source for someone to get any and all Video Game-related news and multi-media, but I'm gonna miss G4 covering shows like E3 and ComicCon Live on their network. It was just convenient to turn on your TV and just watch their E3/ComicCon coverage, without having to worry about problems like your bandwidth size, your internet connection, or any other online connectivity issues like freezes, bugs, glitches or crashes.

Well, R.I.P Classic Retro G4. I will miss that older channel's content more than the more recent G4, which mostly re-ran "Cops," "Cheaters," and "Campus PD" to a such ridiculous degree, you had to wonder why shows like those ever made it onto a network that was supposed to originally be about "Video Games."

Maybe now we can have the Tech TV channel, and also the 2nd season of Code Monkeys on DVD?

Maybe I was outside the targeted age demographic for these shows, but I found them too light on gaming news and too heavy on personality.  That's probably not a good way to compete with a flood of gamig news sites that offer up-to-the minute reports in addition to huge libraries of video.

For me, the shows were trying too hard to be zany, and I didn't want "zany" mixed in with my gaming news.  Even the name "Attack of the Show" sounds like some Internet meme without giving me any clear indication that this might be something interesting for gamers.  It didn't help that I wasn't drawn to any of the personalities that were featured on these shows.  It was like watching David Letterman talk about games.

While I'm ranting, I might as well mention that I think GameSpot has headed down this same road.  I'm not crazy about the current look and feel of the site (I prefered the old one) but I really dislike the trend toward video and the attempt to turn the editors into "personalities."  I don't typically care who writes what reviews or articles as long as they've been gaming long enough to know what they're talking about.  I certainly don't care to see a bunch of pasty nerds cracking jokes for 15 minutes before they start talking about games.  And with silly names like "Escape from Mount Stupid" (am I seriously supposed to click on that?) it seems like they're trying to make the same zany appeal that missed me on G4.

Anyways, I wish the affected well, but there are so many good sources for gaming information these days that I don't worry that we'll be left in the cold wanting for information and news.

X-Play and Attack of the Show are getting was sh*tty to watch.

I liked ATOS best when Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn were hosts.

I also love Candace Bailey and Sara Underwood, if they weren't on that show now, i wouldnt watch it. I wish them all the best and hope to see them back on TV on something else.

I hope they have another gaming/gadget show coming out sometime seems stupid to have none at all.

I wonder if Electric Playground and Reviews on the Run are going to stay on in Canada. Our Canadian Content laws require 40% of programming to be Canadian produced and I'm fairly certain those are the only two Canadian shows on G4. With my luck they'll make another boring-as-hell Campus PD show about Canadian college cops

The shows were crap before they were cancelled. However, G4 just shot themselves in the foot for cancelling their 2 most popular shows.

Well, I'll sit back and watch as G4 slowly dies even more with NEW crappy shows and MORE Cops reruns

This has been happening for a while. I remember when g4 had video game competition shows and cinematech. In the last year G4 had only two shows a day that were completely dedicated to videogames. One was a new episode of xplay and the other was a rerun of xplay. Thats like calling a channel a sports channel, when it only has 1 hour a sports related content a day. I will greatly miss xplay, and hopefully I will see Sessler on another video game show in the near future.

Someone needs to start up a TV videogame channel. Like the guy mentioned below Tina Wood and Laura Foy would be a good start, They could even get Adam Sessler back.

Maybe they coud just like have 6 to 8 hours of shows a day and run repeats of said shows through the rest of the tme.

I just don't beleive that a truly dedicated videogame channel couldn't be successful

xplay was junk, but aots was more of an 18-34 males (obviously a worthless demo for advertising money) entertainment news show than a video game show and was finally getting good at e3 and other expos.

A network of cops reruns, spike tv crossovers and old movies from now on.  A way to make the network stand out...

I love how the Gamespot folks keep referring to Adam Sessler as an "outspoken talking head."  That's about right.

For me AOTS went down hill when Olivia Munn left... once I heard that I stopped watching it and unsubscribed on youtube lol! It was good show but xplay I didnt give a damn about much.. their reviews to me... imo were kinda bias but thats what I think but you can get better game reviews else where. Looks like G4 is slowly turning into mtv which will only be showing crappy reality shows but no games. sad

@VarietyMage I would love a DVD compilation of X-Play's comedy sketches too - that show used to be awesome until Blair Butler left their writing team...

@theKSMM I agree with you to a point - the, as you say, "zany" and "personality" point is a bit much, but I do like it to a degree. For me it's a balance thing; too much either way and it just kills it. I never actually watched Attack of the Show, and X-Play (which i stopped watching years ago) was very , very hit and miss as far as entertainment/humor factor (their skits) go. I thought "mount stupid was some stage in a game (thought i was confused to see Assassin's Creed connected to it, as it seamed out of place but ignored it) - had no idea it was a show. What a dumb name for a show. I have yet to watch anything outside of video reviews and trailers on the site so i don't quite know how bad or good the "personalities" are here, but a lot of times it does seam to be very hit-n-miss in this arena.

@maximo The problem with that is a Youtube channel (like Machinima or IGN's START) is far more viable than a television show. I think it's much more likely that one of those companies would buy X-Play and start running it as a web series.... Or hey Gamespot.... need something to compete with START? You've already got a few great shows like Escape from Mount Stupid and The What If Machine- X-Play would be a nice complement to the on site video reviews
