Funcom locks down Conan MMORPG license

Norwegian developer now holds exclusive rights to make PC, next-gen console massively multiplayer games based on classic fantasy fiction character.

Earlier this month, GameSpot editors named Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures the best massively multiplayer game of E3 2006. Today, its developer, Funcom, announced that it has struck a deal to make sure the game will be the only massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the legendary fantasy figure Conan. The Norwegian studio has struck a deal with the estate of Robert E. Howard, the late author of the Conan stories, to make it the sole developer of Conan MMORPGs until 2018. The deal applies to both PCs and next-generation consoles, further fueling rumors--and hopes--that the title will be coming to either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Funcom also has the rights to extend the deal by five years, if it so chooses, to 2023.

Im keeping the faith that this will be better than wow. Someone commented if AOC is challenging like old school MMO's, then it will rock. I played wow for 3 months, then i canceled and deleted. I felt like a hamster just spinning the wheel. Man, i got bored. This is going to be good, nevertheless im buying it.

What i will like about this game is that its NOT WoW. I think wow is fun, but boring because its a happy land.. Conan got a mora dark feeling too it, and i will definately buy it.. Even if it sucked i would have bought it just because its from norway

hmm..lets see WoW is fr a completely different system and its a different type of game. There is no doubt that the conan game but you cant go around saying wow sucks just because a new mmo is coming out. It seems to me that most people on gamespot are just really anal nerds who like to feel cool to themselves online. Get a life lol. And to those whoa rent anal, those who dont fall into that category, continue on. ^_^

Age of Conan looks quite impressive, though it will face the same uphill battle as all MMOs in the current market. WoW proved there is a huge market for online worlds, but the question is how many ex-WoWers are going to look for the next MMO, or assume that WoW is the only one they would ever be interested in. The fact that Conan is more "adult" will be a draw for some, but hopefully the content and gameplay will make people want to stick with it.

Honestly folks, is there enough lore for an MMO. Funcom did a decent job with Anarchy Online. Though I don`t doubt their competence, I doubt there will be enough people to support such an MMO. They should of just made this a single Action/RPG. Still, all the best of luck to them... :)

i do hope that this is going to be as fun as i hope it is. as much as i did like how easy WoW is to approach and dip in and out of, it hardly appeals with regards longevity - i mean, how many times can you go here, there and back again? sheesh...

Age of Conan looks really interesting to me. And this is coming from someone who has never seen the Conan movies, doesn't know anything about the universe or author besides general "guy with huge sword that kills stuff in mystical swords n' sorcery setting" info, and has never played a MMO before in my life (I'm a console gamer, not PC. And I don't game online yet) . . . even so, this game competes with a few other MMO's (FFXI, City of Heroes/Villains, The Sims Online, WoW and like one other I can't think of) as one that I most definitely would love to try out. I think it's a totally interesting setting and premise, and it looks like it's going to be great gameplay-wise as well. Let's hope it lives up to it's potential.

Awesome, I hope it comes to one of the 2 systems mentioned above, I'd rather play it on my 360 than my PC to be honest - I don't even know if my PC will run it.

How can anyone compare Age of Conan, a truly next-gen MMO with a real combat system , to WoW, a childish auto-combat game that's based on 6-7 year old technology.

Thank God, because the inevitable "battle of the Conan MMRPGs" was just around the corner...

WoW is cool,..but is old and tired. Most of the new MMO's shown at the E3 look far more interesting,..including this one.Burning Crusade is a rather weak expansion that will still sell well though,...but not because it is good.

Sounds like a good deal. Like seeing Arnold don fake hair in two movies! Can't wait for this game/ A PS3 version would rock.

WoW is crap. If Conan is no better, then what's the point?

I've been a Conan fan since I was a little kid. I wonder if this will do it justice.

I'm looking forward to it, and I feel that it may potentially be as good as WoW. Oh, and people who keep it real don't brag about being first...
