Funcom announces further Conan delay

The barbarian's Hyborian Adventures is set back once more to add the final "polish"; PC edition due out May 20.

First announced on April 20, 2005, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures was originally slated to be released in the first half of 2006.

Obviously that didn't happen, and the highly anticipated massively multiplayer role-playing game has been delayed again and again since. First it was coming mid-2007, then late October 2007, then--in what looked like Funcom's final answer--March 2008.

In a further twist to the tale, an announcement made today has stated that the PC edition of the game has been delayed once again, and is now due on May 20.

The extra eight weeks are needed to "stress game systems and polish the game further," according to the statement. Beta testing will be continuing up until the official release. Game director Gaute Godager commented, "Even though we regret delaying the launch, I am certain we made the right choice."

I don't mind delays for perfecting the game. I've been playing tabula rasa for several months now and have been VERY frustrated with how buggy and unpolished the game is. When AoC comes out, I'm cancelling my tabula rasa account.

I already play LotR Online..and wasn't going to sign up for Tabula Rasa cause of this game. And now another delay. My money is going to Tabula. Delays suck!

When it comes to Funcom, thats a company I trust, simply because I played Anarchy Online for a while and I can't really say anything bad about the game and I know that only delaying AoC will make it that much better, I know alot of fellow WoW players are also eagerly waiting for AoC, so hopefully Funcom can captalise on Blizzards mistakes and reap the rewards.

Finally... an MMO worth playing... ...I said that in 2007... when the game was going to be released in October 2007 ...and yet again delayed

Ok, I was wrong. The game is based off the book and not the movie. But who really cares? Does this mean the game will be good? Doubtful...Very few games based off comic books, books, and/or movies even reach the status of being "average". Most are poor. So, I was owned...I said it was based off the movie and not the book. I guess that means the game will be excellent now...

@Vampire_Turtle... Um, how about getting YOUR facts straight? It's not based on the comics and the books, it's just based on the books. Frankly FUNCOM blows. There's no excuse to repeatedly miss deadline after deadline for over two years now. The game must be an utter piece of crap and they are just hoping that stretching this out further and further will make it just a bit less so.

@ AvidGamer444 It's based on the comics and books not the film. Get your facts straight before you post comments.

Game director Gaute Godager commented, "Even though we regret delaying the launch, I am certain we made the right choice." Delaying a game for further testing is always better than releasing a buggy PoS. Look at Hellgate: London as an example. Most people prefer to have their games 'right', rather than 'right now'.

legomann...I wasn't trying to make my comment look cool. Would it be ridiculous of me to imply that most videogames based off of movies or movie character (loosely based or not) suck? No. So, what makes you think for a second that Conan will buck that trend? There are exceptions, but face it...most videogames based on movies and/or movie characters are generally terrible. But I guess I'm way out of line...

Diernes: I concur - I want them to take the steps necessary to get this game just right. I am tired of vanilla-flavored mmorpg's and I too have very high hopes for this game.

Considering that the beta leaves alot to be desired, I didn't find this anouncement very surprising.

This is only good news. The more time they take the better the end product will be. Be patient. I have high hopes for this game.

Maybe it's so they can remove the giant 18+ age restriction on the box so kids can get their parents to buy the game and pay the monthly fee.

The release for Xbox360 was Sept. 1, but I'm sure that's different now. I guess we'll have to wait and see if they even release it this year for PC, then hopefully the 360 date will not be far away..

is been proven many times again and again, the best games are the ones that developers take their time with.and this game is not the exception, some people just don't have any patience, if they need more time,so be it.EA Mythic did the same thing with WAR which I'm really looking forward to.the best games are the ones that require that extra time,I don't mind waiting.

Why am I not surprised? Though, it is understandable from the vantage point that the developers aren't going to, with intent, release a product that everyone has to patch with some mega-fix. I anxiously await May 20th or whenever. . .

I think back to the launch of Anarchy Online, and then I think how I want to write them and beg them to take a lot more time than they think they even need.

I am a big fan of both the books and the movies and I say that I would rather them delay and do it right than put out something that is a total disappointment.

it's better if they make a good game with Conan THAN if they make a game that sucks with Conan in it looking like a pig with cloths on

This is another example of license abuse. If you have seen the Conan movies, and played the demo you will be appaled at the articulation of the protagonist. They shouldn't be calling this game conan. It doesn't even seem like it's the same person.

Edit: from what I read in all the posts I'm not sure if this is the game I was thinking of.

The game is Not Ready To Be Released, not even close. Calm down, chill out, and give this game eight more weeks. Unless you want another Hellgate/Vanguard/Whatever.

They can polish and polish and polish and polish this game until they are blue in the face...it will still probably suck.

@saturnsrise: Almost all games that have been released in the last five years have been delayed. That's why so many developers are so vague about release dates. Half Life 2 and Ninja Gaiden are not the only good delayed games... This will be the next MMO I play. Can't wait for it to come to 360, hopefully not too long after the PC. These repeated delays only further my faith in the strength of this title, the dedication of its developement team, and the commitment its publisher has in its quality and ultimate success. This game will be grand.

Well, more polish is a good thing. We don't want another Hellgate.

That's gonna hurt their release if they go at the same time or after Warhammer Online. Although Warhammer doesnt look that close to being complete... I think they need the time too.

Who cares about some barbarian game anyway. Come on Funcom make with some more Longest Journey goodness already. April and zoe arent getting any younger.

dslyderink

The engine in this is so old now due to the ridiculous development period that graphics-wise it will be similar to STALKER (which also took 5 years to develop) - ok, but not great or cutting edge. Hope the gameplay doesn't suck.

runstalker

> hey EA: if you're now drooling over the chance to launch Warhammer before Conan and you are about to issue the order to EA Mythic to speed up development... please don't. The moronic Halloween launch of Hellgate should have taught EA a lesson about serving half-baked MMO goods at launch. Let Mythic finish Warhammer.

troness

This is disappointing no doubt, but from what i've heard the game needs polish so this is a good thing. Funcom doesn't ever want to repeat the horrible launch that was Anarchy Online.
