Front Mission Evolve-ing spring 2010

Double Helix's third-person-shooter take on Square Enix's turn-based strategy franchise deploying early this year on 360, PS3, PC.

Square Enix's long-running Front Mission franchise has been known for its turn-based tactical strategy since the first installment debuted in 1995. However, the publisher tapped Irvine, California-based Double Helix Games to transition the mech-combat series into the third-person shooter genre with Front Mission Evolved. Today, Square Enix revealed when the fruit of Double Helix's efforts will be seen, announcing a spring 2010 launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game.

Front Mission Evolved still serves up giant mechs du jour.

Front Mission Evolved once again sees humanity gripped by war, with the face of that conflict being the wanzer battle mechs. Players will be able to take direct control of the lethal war machines in a single-player campaign that involves a terrorist attack on the government's orbital elevator. Assuming the role of engineer Dylan Ramsey, players pursue the terrorist organization, uncovering a nefarious plot involving a deteriorating global alliance along the way.

Emphasizing fast-paced third-person action, the game also features an array of customization options for the wanzers. Customization extends the game's multiplayer component, where players can go online for single- or team-based battles against other players.

Just so some of the idiots know, FM wasn't always a strategy game. FM was a sidescroller(Gun Hazard.) an action rpg(Alternative) and a TPS(Online). So really, you accept those FM games even if they aren't strategy, yet you don't accept this. In fact, you should be happy this is the first non srpg FM game released in America, all the others were Japan only.

Game look good and all but I rather it be the normal SRPG front mission. There hadn't been any great SRPG this generation yet

So when's FM6 coming out? I mean...a REAL Front Mission where I get to deploy 8 Wanzers and spec them like I want to? Guys, this is a joke right? Right? O.O

You know we couldn't get front mission 5 here because they said there wouldn't be enough interest. I would have paid $100 for a NA release version. I even signed the pettittions that were on line. To add insult to industry they bring it back in a form that's never been a big seller either. When was the last time you heard a public outcry for another Armored Core. NEVER!!!!

When a title like FM turn into a shooter it really should not be called "evolved". What made FM great was that there a interesting storyline, wanzer tactical strategy, and customizations. I am not saying a shooter is a bad direction, but for a series based on strategic tactical RPG, shooter seems more like "devolved" approach. However, only time will tell whether this will be a fun game or not. Since just because it takes the direction of a shooter doesn't mean a game can't be fun, it simply just in a different genre now.

No doubt their choice to go third person action over SRPG is being hottly debated. Only time will tell whether this will be a hit or one hell of a miss. I sincerely doubt that this'll be quite like armoured core, with jump jets up the whazoo, prancing and flying about like an episode of Tekka man. Probably a little slower paced than that. When the Wanzers slide along the ground like that it kind of reminds me of that old Snes game Metal Warriors, the Havoc Mech did something similar. This could be good, or it could flop, i'm not making any premature judgements based on what little we all know about it.

If it's like Armored Core with acrobatic fast mechs, I'll pass. If it's a more traditional Earthsiege type of gameplay, I could still be interested but frankly it was a mistake to change the gameplay from turn based strategy, I think.

Looks exactly like the gundam games and those god awful dynasty warrior gundam games. The best parts of the classic FM series was its deep elevated story, strategic elements in turn based combat and customisation. This just looks like a simple layed out plot and a generic shooter with mechs...

this looks really good the current gen consoles have been sadly lacking a great mech game and hopefully this could turn it around

Well honestly I am always kinda used to the Front mission series being so tactical and I've beaten FM4 but I dont think none of them were as good a FM3 to me that was a solid hit more than any other. But I look forward to this title and if money looks right it is a 1st day buy for me. Why? Well I was always a fan of Front Mission and on top of that during the PC i always played Mech Warrior and Mech Commander and on the Xbox Mech Assult and a few years back they were planning Front Mission Online but it was underwraps and I believe this is it and will be it. I am also turned on to interest about the Wanzers fully optional I just hope the online play is very good (like Killzone 2 and MW2) and you can have team deathmatch or free-for-all but in the long run I will play for story also and I will be looking for to this game. After looking down reading about FM4 failing and US not getting FM5 is kind of true and a shame becuase I remember FM4 coming out around the time SO:Till the end of time did and my local Gamestop was selling it for 9.99(used) and that was crazy but I bought it lol. But At least the game did not fail like Steal Battilion did. ( Iwanted that but spending all that money on a game with a controller together for 200.00 I think was not worth it)

Won't be as good as Front Mission 3. Great game.

O Jesus this does not bode well for Front Mission. Have you seen the other games Double Helix has made, pretty much the only one that sounds stomachable is Indiana Jones and well thats Indy. How does Squenix hand over this franchise to a company like this, well then again one asks why the bother buying edios, or why they release some ff games 4 or 5 times as well.

Well im glad im not the only guy who is dissapoint that this wont be another FM SRPG. A mech SRPG is something this next gen consoles need. Not another shooter. Be nice if FM5 came out in the states. THat game looks good for a PS2 game. Easily best in the series. Shame FM4 sucked, b/c thats why US didnt get FM5. If this sucks FM series might just die with it. Anyone know a place to contact the devs and pressure them to make a SRPG?

Nobody played chromehounds i see... Oh well too late anyway sega closed the server this month ... Btw this is not gonna be as bad as it seems. chromehounds was like front mission exept in a third person shooter aspect. And to tell you frankly, it was awesome ! Dont get me wrong i love front mission series even that one on snes ! Too bad it aint going to be turn based as it always been but ppl ! Dont judge this too quick. =)

I loved the Front Mission games for the SRPG elements. This i don't have much interest in....

Not only is the fact that another great strategy IP is jumping on the shooter band wagon, but Double Helix? looking at their less then stellar track record, I weep for this games chances at being good. Farewell my beloved Front Mission.

Bummer, its not a SRPG? Well, leave it to SE to screw up another of my favorite games. What is up with all the good old game companies destroying what they used to do well. Sega hasn't made a really good Shining Force game since Shining Force 2, and SE and Final Fantasy just aren't up to snuff anymore. Especially, with other game companies (Bioware, EA, THQ) doing the better job and competing for my dollar.

they should have kept it a tactical strategy game...I mean at best they will make a better armored core.

This is what happens when mediocre FPS games sell lots of games.... Established strategy series get converted over to TPS games to try and catch the gravy train.

Hoski0999

Why cant we just have the good old RPG turned based Front Mission game? You know the ones we KNOW are good? This just looks like another company trying to do a better armored core... which actually isnt to hard of a task.

"Wanzer, pronounced "Van-ser," portmanteau of "Wanderung Panzer." Yeah its a japanese made-up german word. Anyway, who cares about this? Give us Front Mission 5 already!" Front mission 5 came out 5 years ago, dont count on ever seeing it.

Since everyone is mentioning Armored Core, when discussing this game. From Software, the guys who made game of the year Demon Souls, just announced Armored Core 5. They have a website up for it.

screw that. the combination of story and strategy are what made front mission appealing to me. if i want a 3rd person mech shooter, i'll just get a copy of one of the several crappy armored core and gundam games.

Hope it turns out well. It's a huge leap from the turn based strategy most of it's fans know and love but double helix hasn't shipped out any critically declared "flops."

seems like its gonig to become alot like the Armored Core series, not exactly a bad thing, but im going to miss the strategy.

Wow...FM4 was one of my favorite Mech games for the PS2, I hope for success with this title. It had a really great tactics scheme.

Id take FM5 over this any day......but i will wait and see, maybe JUST MAYBE it will be the perfect blend of Front Mission and Old School Armored Core that its trying to be. Maybe.

To everyone whining about them making FM into a shooter...the second game in the series (NOT FM2, but FM: Gun Hazard) was a shooter, and one of the best of the 16-bit era.
