From Spore to Space: Shape Your Galaxy

First customize your spaceship, then customize entire worlds.

Spore-crazed North Americans still have a few days before they can finally create their carnivorous cell hell-bent on galactic domination, so we thought we'd delve even deeper into the strategy game from the mind of Will Wright before its release date. After having detailed each customization tool in depth, we wanted to break down the final customization tools in Spore: terraforming.

Mmmm, chocolate.

Terraforming is the science of shaping a barren planet so that it can support life. In Spore, there are many facets of terraforming; some are simply for fun, but most are crucial to providing a safe habitat in which your colonies can flourish. Each planet has a terraforming rating called a TScore. A TScore of 0 is inhospitable, and colonies there will need a dome to support life. Its population and production are also severely limited. A T1 planet can support very basic life forms, a T2 planet supports even larger life forms, and a T3 planet flourishes with a vibrant ecosystem.

As you explore the planets in Spore, you'll notice a globe that shows off the planet's TScore. The TScore is determined by atmosphere and temperature, with a T3 planet being the most balanced. If you wish to colonize a T0 planet with a very dense atmosphere and freezing temperatures, you'll need to utilize tools, such as a meteor shower to increase the temperature, as well as a drought creator to reduce atmosphere levels. Conversely, a hot planet with light atmosphere will need an ice storm to cool off the temperature and an atmosphere generator that will increase cloud cover.

Once you utilize these tools, you'll see the planet slowly change in appearance. But these tools only produce temporary changes, and a T0 planet that improves to T1 will eventually return to T0 unless you stabilize the atmosphere. To do so, you'll need to import plants and animals from T1 planets using your handy abduction beam. You repeat this process over time to create a flourishing T3 world that can support two of your colonies and produce the galaxy's most valuable resource: delicious spice.

Making planets habitable is only one facet of terraforming, however. In Spore, you can truly play god and make planets in your own image. You use a number of planet sculpting and painting tools that you will discover throughout the galaxy. Basic terra tools allow you to create mountains and craters or flatten the contours of a planet. There are plenty of fun tools as well that let you create tentacle-shaped mountains, seas of pure crystal, and, oh yes, rivers of swirling chocolate.

Fire in the Sky? Alien abduction is so cute in Spore.

Finally, you can interact with primitive cultures still in creature and tribal stages so they will worship you as gods. You can drop monoliths or carve crop circles on their underdeveloped planets and create instant allies, although it remains to be seen if they can help you with your booming spice trade. Be sure to check out Spore when it is released on September 7.

Wow. Spore is going to be one of the most revolutionary, and different, games know to man!

I like the game, but I found playing Easy mode to be a real time saver. Hard mode didn't seem very hard, just more tedious...

It is great how you will see creatures you may have made in previous sessions show up in your current game. Or, if you have someone on your bubby list, their creatures more then likely will show up somewhere in your travels. I even made friends with one of those creatures in the space age and now they fly along with me in my fleet....kinda like a pet.

They shouldnt have made each stage a completely differente game, we should have been able to go back on land with our evolved creatures to make the lesser individuals our pets or just kill them with lasers, hunt them for food, etc. etc. I love the 4 diff stages, but sadly they are not interactive, you get 4 diff simple games, with an amazing "creature creator". Worth buying though.

Nailex you can choose military as theres always loads of methods of completely oblitterating a galaxy, at one stage when you can destroy planets i really wanna know if its possible to destroy the core of the galaxy :D

The hype around this game was so much that i believe it had probably affected me somehow. I must admit. I have a lot of fun with Spore so far. But somehow... I don't feel it will keep me playing it for long. If you have played the stages once, the only other thing you may do is do the same thing with some different looking creatures. For gamers like me which actually play the game for the action and don't have much fun customizing things(the only thing i look when i chose an item is the bonuses it gives) around the simple gameplay Spore offers will soon get boring. The Sims fans will probably like it though.

CrudmanIV you do realise you can beam down off the ship at the space stage right? there is an unbelievable amount of stuff to unlock and complete in that stage too. you can fill the progression bar up and only have completed about 1/8 of the rest of the content ie unlock weapons terraform styles etc

crudman- once u go through the game once you can restart another planet at any stage you want... this game is highly addictive

Unfortunately @SPINY I would have to agree with you. This terraform`ing sounds nice and all but if your staying in your spaceship the whole time and you don't actually relive the civ stage on the planets then there's hardly any point to it. Sorry but I'm gonna wait till this is cheaper. Maybe then I'll realise this game is good. But until then I CAN WAIT for it. Maybe this game could be better if the stages of life weren't in such a set order.@AIOKONX100 I really wouldn't classify spore as sandbox

8.0 is indeed a mercy rating. So much work, so much hype. The game is just not that good. 6.5 tops.

Very much so. Xfire tells me I have already invested 20 hours in two days. The last game to make me do that was Galactic Civ 2

Well, considering I typed that first comment up in about 30 seconds right after hoping off a 16 hour Spore binge, I'm surprised the whole comment isn't one long string of gibberish. Oh, wswedin, I would be careful about making rash generalizations like that because you fit half of your own description :p And guys, don't blame me when you are working in the EA spice mines to earn the 500 dollars required to play the third installment of Mass Effect 6. If EA made it, there is ALWAYS a reason to pirate it.

Yea, Hyperion_1400. I know I love to listen to things SCREEN in terror. Go back to school.

Well Hyperion_1400... you can keep calling us losers if you wish. But frankly, losers are the people that have no purpose in life and just float around insulting others... they also tend to break the law. These descriptions, match you very closely. There is no reason at all to pirate a game unless you once owned it, or already own it but don't have the disks. Make a difference in life, please.

Hyperion_1400
Hyperion_1400

Well, screw you Europe, and twice over for already having Clear Sky and not sharing it with us :p Oh and aiia, if you knew the level of absurd DRM that is accompanying Spore, you would be pirating it too.

Hyperion_1400 you are a pirate, we are not losers because we don't have the game, come on

Hyperion_1400
Hyperion_1400

Pfft you losers are reading a preview and I'm already playing it. It is one of the greatest games of all time. It's like Will rolled Civ & Galactic Civ all into one, and just as addicting. Nothing like dropping an Anti-matter bomb on a city and listening to the inhabitants screen in terror as it SLOWLY decends on them.

I have a feeling this is a new GTAesque Revolutionary Game. This will "spork" (Pun very much intended) a whole new genre of games. It would be awesome if they came out with expansions of each stage as well to deepen the game. I can't wait!

This game looks so awesome. However, it's kind of sad that GameSpot gave it only an 8.0. Hopefully I'll get really angry at GameSpot for giving it such a low score.
