Free-to-play Xbox Live game Ascend out tomorrow

Microsoft-published Ascend: Hand of Kul releasing tomorrow as free download on Xbox Live.

by

Xbox Live's portfolio of free-to-play offerings will expand tomorrow with the release of Ascend: Hand of Kul, formerly known as Ascend: New Gods, it has been announced.

The Xbox 360 game was announced during Microsoft's 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo briefing under its former name and was previously in closed beta.

Ascend: Hand of Kul was developed by Signal Studios, the Seattle-area developer behind Toy Soldiers. The third-person action role-playing game features single- and multiplayer and is described as "truly free-to-play."

Gamers can play Ascend: Hand of Kul from beginning to end without paying a dime and there is no premium currency in the game.

Xbox Live's first free-to-play game was October 2012's Happy Wars.

Thanks. i have seen third party drives. I just thought that microsoft would ban me for using them. But then i thought that gives me more space to download more of their games. So i doubt they care. I have downloaded it but i haven't played it yet too. But it looks promising

This game is listed as a "games with gold" game and I could download it iwithout having xbox live gold. Will I just not be able to play it? The other games with gold games out right now like rainbow six vegas to, only prompt me with the $19.99 button when I go to download it which implies I can't get it free because I don't have gold. So not sure what that means, but people without gold might be able to play this.

If only I have LIVE I would get this

Most of the comments I see are people complaining about paying for a gold account.  If complaining about paying for a service that costs $2.50-5.00 a month is your biggest gripe then you might need to find a better paying job or ask mommy or daddy to increase your allowance.

Free to play is more of a get what you pay for set up. I wont play free to play ever I prefer to own on a physical media that I pay a set amount to get a complete game not some half asses game that requires you to pay far more then retail to get a full experience.

I've been in the beta the last week and a half - this game is absolutely fantastic. The stats are going to be reset at launch and I've had a hard time pulling myself away from it and losing a ton of progress.

Looks like it is worth trying for the price.

As for the irrelevant arguments below, an Xbox without XBL is like a car with only two gears.  This generation is almost over.  How have you not figured that out yet?  A PS4 without PS+ will be the same, even if they let you do a few more things for free to score marketing points over MS.

I looked in the comments section thinking i would find comments about the game but instead i just found people whining about f2p. -_-

Yes, because it's so easy to just "stop working minimum wage jobs."
If someone is just out of high school, is disabled, was laid off, lives in an area with few jobs, or has been unemployed for more than a year, it's not like they can just magically decide to be making $20 an hour.

Your attitude shows that you are either 1) incredibly naive about the current US economy & how employment works, or 2) one of those oblivious, self-entitled sorts who think that bad jobs & poverty are solely a result of laziness.

@Apelgrandure These same people complaining about the price of live are about 14 years old and theyre bitter that their parents dont give them enough allowance for it, you have to keep in mind that many of the people on here are under 18.

2nd, most people who can't afford xbox live gold AREN'T paying $2 for a cup of coffee

@rasterror Some people have other priorities other than gaming.  For those that still complain they are just drama queens.  Leave it be.

@Wrathesoul Your loss. Most f2p games aren't even close to what you're describing.
The good F2P developers have figured out that they can put out a full game & just sell (completely optional) vanity items, character slots, and other things that give no advantage & still make plenty of cash.

@Wrathesoul Well they say this is free to play and its a full games no one ever gets to pay for anything ever so your loss

@Simulator_Shock  You can pay for the system, the games, and a TV to play them on but you draw the line at $5 a month..

@FULGOREY2K If u can't afford £5 a month for the best online service on consoles then u shouldn't be a gamer.

@MAXAM999 Yeah right? A company that wants to make profit? How crazy is that?

I can't wait have my own company and start giving stuff for free!

Apelgrandure
Apelgrandure

@MaskofMany @Apelgrandure Firstly : Most of the time, it is because of laziness. Secondly : If you cant afford a fucking service then DON'T BITCH ABOUT THE FACT THAT IT COSTS MONEY TO HAVE THAT SERVICE. I cant afford a 95 inch 8K resolution TV, OH MY DEAR GOD WHY IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY CANT I GET ONE FOR FREE? Its like listening to a bunch of idiots asking to have stuff for free because they cant afford it and dear god if you cant afford 5 dollars a month you should NEVER be thinking of gaming as a hobby. Where do these people get their games might I add? 60 bucks for a game is a lot, even by my standard, yet these tits cant afford 5 dollars a month? Don't come with your "I'm holier than thou" attitude and call me ignorant or self-entitled. NEWS FLASH : not everything is free, MORE NEWS : not everything is sugar coated and sometimes people need to hear the goddamn truth and toughen up. Stop blaming everyone else for everything that happens.

@CaveManCobb find out more about Sony service before u troll because u don't of to be a ps+ user to play free to play games LMAO!!! ur comment fail in so many ways

MajahretDiviera
MajahretDiviera

@CaveManCobb what are you trying to refer to, The free games you get with PS+ or actual Free to Play (model wise) games? Yes Free to play Games dont require a subscription to PS+, you can access them with the free version, this will be true for both the PS3 and PS4. PS+ free games are free while your subscription for the service is active, which makes sense. Yes you could in theory say you are renting them, but even so, they are free and make the $50 price tag more than worth the while.

@jayjay444 @FULGOREY2K Just because someone doesn't buy something, it doesn't mean they can't afford it.

I don't use Gold because I don't play Xbox online.  I mostly use my PS3 for everything, and I have PS+

MaskofMany

@Apelgrandure

Where did I whine about free things? Where did I "bitch about" XBL? Oh, right, I didn't. You're just pretending I did so that you can vent your adolescent rage in my direction.

What I commented on was your (demonstrably false) comment about people being poor/lazy. Of course, then you come back with, "
Most of the time, it is because of laziness."
Which is funny because it's an outright lie.

I guess the large number of people who were laid off due to factories & companies closing were just "lazy." I guess people on disability for health problems that make it impossible to work are "lazy." Single parents, the elderly, people with extensive health issues, anyone working their butts off at a job that pays crap because it's all that's available, military vets injured in combat, and anyone who makes under 20k a year for any reason is just "lazy." They should all be spoiled teens spending their parents' money & throwing tantrums on the internet, right?

I honestly hope you're too young to have been in the workforce. I've been in it for 13 years, right out of high school. I know firsthand that the economy, local job availability, experience, education, health, age, and sometimes plain luck all factor in to one's ability to earn income. If you think that being poor is "mostly due to laziness," then you've never been poor, and have never known anyone who was poor. You need to grow up & get in touch with the real world, kid.

And for the record, I actually agree that people shouldn't complain about free stuff, and that XBL isn't a major investment if someone has disposable income. I also agree that new gaming shouldn't be a priority if one is poor. (It's odd how you forgot that used & borrowed games exist, and that not everyone - especially people under 18 - has a credit card.)
I was just pointing out that you were being ignorant & unnecessarily juvenile about something you obviously know nothing about.
But hey, it's your right to make yourself look uneducated if you want. I was just trying to correct a factual error.

Sony already confirmed that F2P games on PS4 don't need PS+ to play them any other mp they need it but not on F2P.

MaskofMany

You have to pay for internet for XBL & PS+, also. That's pretty much a standard utility in most homes these days. You might as well say "you have to pay for electricity."

And only some MMOs are subscription-based; most have gone F2P or B2P (my preferred model). The subscription-only model is dying out. Plus, the multiplayer, demos, & videos are all free on PC.

That being said, consoles have some good exclusives, and some games are just better on console. I like all of the gaming platforms - but then, I'm not a fanboy. Just an all-around gamer.

@FULGOREY2K @jayjay444 I love RTS games on PC but 3rd person and FPS shooters are better on consoles and there's alot more of them with the exception of Battlefield the rest this gen on PC have been crap, I wan't games like Half-life again. :(

FULGOREY2K

@jayjay444 nah, i don't do WoW or those Crappy MMO, i enjoy good FPS, 3rd Person, RTS, and Fighters there.

not to mention those great indie games.

jayjay444
jayjay444

@FULGOREY2K @jayjay444 Only it's not free on PC because u have to pay for a internet connection also MMOS are usually £9 a month for just 1 game, XBL is £5 a month for all games and free demos and videos.
