Free Red Dead Redemption DLC dated, detailed

Myths and Mavericks Bonus Pack arriving this September with new multiplayer characters and environments.

Rockstar Games' open-world Western Red Dead Redemption was released in May 2010 to rapt reviews. The game has since welcomed a string of add-ons, including major downloadable content like the Undead Nightmare and Outlaws to the End packs. Now, Rockstar is thanking fans for their patronage by saddling up new "appreciation" content, due out this September.
Red Dead Redemption's open world continues to grow in September.

Rockstar today announced the Myths and Mavericks Bonus Pack for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Red Dead Redemption. The free add-on brings new, "fan-favorite" characters and environments to the game's multiplayer component.

Rockstar did not specify which characters would arrive in the content, but it did say a certain "grizzled ol' gunslinger" would be included. The accompanying picture confirms that this character is protagonist John Marston's mentor Landon Ricketts.

For more on the open-world Western, check out GameSpot's review of Red Dead Redemption.

Is this similar to GTA? Yes, it is made by the same company, and is a similar style game. I will probably finish this and never finish a GTA game because the theme is new. GTA's have been clones of themselves since GTA 3. Since then 4 almost identical games have came out to good reviews. RDR theme makes it different then GTA. The multiplayer isn't amazing and some of the spawn points are bad, but overall this is a great game. I can't wait until they do a RDR 2.

@Phaselinear I saw that you gave RDR a 7.5, and a 7.5 isn't a negative score, so I'm not sure what you or your haters are talking about!

I've been getting bad press (LMAO) for writing a negative review about RDR (booorish game, and ESSENTIALLY a clone job of GTA series) by saying it was GTA on horseback. SERIOUSLY, some of you must know that outside of your living domain there is blue sky, and a shiny thing called the sun. Get a grip people. And one other thing.....YES, I OWNED THE GAME, but was bored, and did a flip at the nearest GS for something else. LOL

I wish there was a personal upgrade so I could get a machine gun and drill holes in all the punks who play this game ! and I do mean punks ! I quit for awhile and and went back and I swear the punk clicks are still there ! But , as for the game , it's Great and highly addictive , it's amazing the DEA has not banned it ? those dumb bastards just might ! RDR is Great !

@vallan2 Well said, I was thinking the same thing. When I saw this post, I thought for sure it was old talking about Outlaws to the End. I was blown away that it was totally new content, free, for a game made back in 2010 which many people still enjoy today. I can't say I've always been a fan of Rockstar, RDR was my first by them, but I can say that I'm now a big fan of what they do. Undead Nightmare showed how DLC should be done, and the fact that they are still supporting RDR shows they don't make games strictly to print money, they love them as much as we do.

(sorry for the double post,) @Phasellinear it says in your only blog that you always trust reviews. So why didn't you Tustin the millions of gamers that liked this game even more than gta for it's touching story, vibrant game world and fun gameplay that actually added alot to gta's gameplay, which has always been about killing innocent civilians. You do know you barely steal any horses in red dead? How bout review? Did you trust the 9.5 average on meteoritic, which makes this one of the highest rated games, ever? Or did you trust the dozens of GOTY awards red dead redemption has won? No, you havent trusted any of this because clearly if you had, you'd know this masterpiece is much more than a gta clone.

@Phaselinear, you've never actually played the game, have you?

@TheoAlmighty @serialknight007 many people have. Rockstar have released a statement there will be no undead free roam. It's disappointing, and I'm bot sure why, but it's not happening.

Finally, a company shows that it actually cares about its fans by giving away free stuff that obviously was deliberately taken out of a game to make money. Red Dead Redemption is the best game i have on my 360 and this is only making it better

Best videogame news I've heard all day. With everyone else charging more and more, it's good to see some companies can still give awesome stuff away for free.

This game is epic, and I'm glad Rockstar is still with the game. And I can't wait to play as Ricketts, he was awesome.

The only bug bear i have about free roam is idiots who are grouped in posse vote to kick solo free roamers from the game. Something needs to be done about that. Otherwise this game is still one of my top three games that stay on my hard drive. Rock on Rockstar.

redness19 i played RDR recently and found there was loads of people playing. I think this is because it's such a unique game that you just cant compare it to other games like Mw2, black ops and battlefield

robbyspry there might not be another game. if you have played RDR the whole way through then it kind of makes you feel the story has ended. But la.noire might have a second game.

Who honestly cares about more characters when you already have like 50 to choose from in the original game alone? They should stop wasting time on this game and work on the next.

I am not surprised this was free, I am surprised they even bother. The RDR multiplayer community must be tiny as hell with actual multiplayer games out there. I am dissapointed with the lack of single player RDR DLC. The zombie DLC was great but it didn't add anything to the RDR story.

New SP DLC like GTA's is what we need. I can believe they haven't seen how much money they could make by letting you play John's early years? Or Landon Ricketts life!

Evil_Sidekick

Free crap is crap, and MP is double crap In SP, Landon Ricketts is a character; in MP he is no more than a skin, so....who the f**k cares if he is on the DLC?

@Phaselinear Its really not a clone. You'd be surprised how much programming went into this game. Not only the enviroments, lighting, human and animal AI, voice acting, Character movements. These are pretty much all different.

@phaselinear You can have your opinion but, imo, RDR is Rockstars greatest creation. The campaign is actually really fun and the story is great and I actually keep playing the missions because they're hella fun, unlike in GTA where I'd do like one or two missions, then get bored, jack a car and go run some people over. Your argument that they used no imagination creating the game is ridiculous. Because as previously stated, R* crafted a brilliant story and characters for this game. And how does GTA take any imagination? You drive cars around, and kill anyone you want and blow stuff up, i could think of that in my sleep. Honestly the base idea of any game doesn't necessarily require a ton of creativity and imagination. CoD, Battlefield: You shoot people with guns in first person. If you don't like the game that's fine, but if you're going to post a rude message insulting a game, try to actually have some semblance of an argument behind your points. Even if everything you said is true, that they were just trying to ride the success of GTA, how is the public being ripped off in any way? Its an extremely fun game with a great story and characters, that has very similar gameplay to GTA, in a completely different setting than GTA. Thats like saying that R* was ripping off the public by creating GTA4.

Nice to see that at least one developer follows the good steps of Valve by keeping a game alive for more than a year.

Yes, RDR was pretty much a GTA clone, but it was a really really good GTA clone. Personally, I thought a lot of the conventions in GTA worked a lot better in Red Dead anyway, such as being able to escape the law if you could get enough distance, things like that. Add to that the story was engrossing and the voice acting was some of the best I've ever heard, I'd say it was Rockstar's best game ever.

Phaselinear
Phaselinear

Just MY opinion (so don't go into puberty when I say this), but RDR is REALLY a stupid and boring game. The only thing these idiots did was produce a game rip off of GTA, and instead of driving cars around town...YOU RIDE A HORSE. WTH kind of imagination did that take? Absolutely nothing! I bet they just sat around a conference room table, and thought of ways to rip off the public by riding (lol) the success wave of GTA. "Hey guys...how about we just create a GTA...but this time...we just change it front the city to the wild west. LOL...LOL...yeh...and we can use horses instead of cars man...he he he...lol....yeh....coooool!" Lame.

Rockstar actually make proper DLC like the GTA IV BOGT and TLAD. Each one could've been a full game!

This is one of the reasons I love a Rockstar thier DLCs are huge and it genuinely feels like DLC. Whereas most developers/publsihers leave out content off thier games to sell as DLC later. Rockstar creates the DLC after the game is completed.

R* is one the few Game Develpers that actually appreciate their customers and fans and don't try and take advantage of them like a few certain other companies (you all know who I'm talking about)
