Free Portal 2 level editor arrives May 8

Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC hits PC and Mac machines in under two weeks; no word on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 releases.

Valve's highly regarded game Portal 2 will add a puzzle editor for the PC and Mac on May 8, the company announced today. The editor--announced last October--will arrive as part of the free Perpetual Testing Initiative downloadable content.

Gamers can begin building their own Portal 2 levels on May 8.

The puzzle editor will allow players to create, share, and download Portal 2 levels. Players can publish their creations to the Steam Workshop, where users can browse, vote on, and select other levels to try out.

No mention was made of the Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC coming to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, and as of press time, Valve had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

The PS3 version of Portal 2 supports Steam, but no Steam Workshop support on that platform has been announced. The Xbox 360 version of Portal 2 does not feature Steam integration of any kind.

The Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC is the second batch of postrelease add-on content for Portal 2. It follows 2011's free Peer Review content, which hit all platforms on October 4.

Personally I can't wait. I love creating mods and levels for games. Ya, there will be a bunch of dipsticks that make crazy levels, but boo hoo don't use them. I'm glad we all have a reason to play again. As for @grim0187 ... riiight. It's not like no one bought this. You can play cross platform, I'm sure that'll affect the custom maps. Not to mention the game sold 2m copies in just the US. And .7m of those were PC.

This is cool, I guess, for the 20 people who own this on PC....

@Dugular True. I was just ranting anyway ha ha. I also don't really see the benefit of Steam Workshop because the nexus sites have been around for the longest and awesome.

Wow, finally a reason to play this game again. Thank god, the gameplay is too good for just 10~ hours.

There's gonna be some idiot who makes an impossible level full of mirrors or endless hallways or something...this could be the most annoying editor ever released...

@wormkid_64 Valve is for sure earning a purchase from me. i had already borrowed and played the game while beating most everything on the playstation version. upon completion of my recent pc, i will be buying this game just to create puzzles and well earn all the steam achievements for the game again. Great job Newell and Valve Dev team. i will support those who support others.

Xbox can get it once they start sharing the Halo series with the PC gamers. ;) In all seriousness, this is great, and it's absolutely free! Can you imagine the image change Activision would have if they started being generous with the people who buy their game every year?

Oh BTW,thank you valve for proving that DLC doesn't have to be the spawn of the devil. As I said before,it may earn you a sale of a PC copy of the game.

I might buy a second copy of this game for my PC just so I can participate in that. I've wanted to be in GLaDOS's shoes from the beginning. Now,there is science to be done....

Maybe put that it's only for PC and Mac in the headline so people don't waste their time loading this because it's not on consoles...

If they can't make it happen on consoles, I won't hold it against 'em, because Valve has provided me with such a single player experience, as well as really fun co-op that I had a great time sharing with a friend. That said, if it can't be done on consoles, Valve... please, please, PLEASE put some more of your very own levels out for us to enjoy in more DLC packs! Even if it has very little in the way of continuing the story arc of Atlas and Peabody, its just a lot of fun to continue their adventures alongside a friend.

Yikes Valve. This is dedication to your fans. And it's FREE too. :) PS to the community: don't make solo maps.

@sknight175216 Hey, don't want to start a fight, because I understand your general frustrations, but just want to keep things in perspective :) Firstly, Portal 2 is brilliant, but it is also consolised. Note the lack of twitch-reaction puzzles that were dominant near the end of Portal 1 (Due to Portal 2 wanting to cater for gamepad users, which is fair enough). Secondly, while Skyrim is more console-ish than say, Morrowind, it is still currently the ONLY game that is taking advantage of the Steam Workshop. Therefore, you have criticised the ONLY other company who is making use of the very feature you're complimenting :D If you have Skyrim on PC, you are in the only group who can get the free high-res textures dlc. And TONS of free user-created modifications, plus the free editor (Which is what Portal 2 is only releasing in May). So yes, I understand that Elder Scrolls has got more console-ish, but a lot of franchises have done that, and Bethesda is one of the few cross-platform developers in recent times who has taken a step in the right direction for PC gamers by utilising the Steam Workshop :) (Not just that, but they effectively tested the hell out of the Workshop for Valve and it is most certainly Skyrim's success with it that has helped speed along Portal 2 taking advantage of it)

sknight175216
sknight175216

Finally some good news ha ha. Keep the love for PC gamers! No more consolization. Bethesda I'm talking to you. Exclusivity deals with Xbox first. Shame, shame. The Elder Scrolls was stepped into the gaming world as a computer RPG. Not a console one. Hopefully we can get some free *dlc* for Skyrim too ha ha. I'm so off topic right now...I'm stopping. :P

How can such good news bring forth so many stupid platform fanboys? I'll just celebrate this, a free dlc that allows unlimited user generated content, the antithesis of greed fueled, butchered dlc. Cheers Valve.

@ Blackace Your sheer ignorance is unbelievable. You obviously never knew that Unreal Tournament 3 on PC can have user created mods shared with the PS3 version. You just made an Xbox 360 fanboy fool out of yourself.

Dante200X
Dante200X

On PC we don't call this "DLC" because that usually implies it's not free (these days especially). We simply call this a patch...patches tend to be free updates. You know back before they even had such as thing as dlc. And of course, free content isn't anything new at all for Valve.

ElFlechero

@Blackace "This should be easy to do on the 360 at least. I can see them taking awhile to get it running on the PS3. The XBox 360 already has level building games like Trials Evolution and Forza 4." Are you joking? I guess you haven't heard of Little Big Planet or Modnation Racers? (and others) Apparently there are a couple, but the 360 is not the console known for level building games.

@blackace did you not even read the article? PS3 is steam compatible and 360 is not, and uploading and downloading the levels with the level creator will run off of steam. if this dlc were to make it to any console it would be the PS3

nomation29
nomation29

I love how people are whining about how unfair it is that this is exclusive to the PC, while Activision and Ea continue to make PC games horrible.

blackace

Hurry up and get this on the XBox 360 and PS3. This should be easy to do on the 360 at least. I can see them taking awhile to get it running on the PS3. The XBox 360 already has level building games like Trials Evolution and Forza 4. So make it so. ***************************************************************** FarmFreshDX Let's just face it: the restrictions that are on XBox and Playstation online features, particularly DLC, will prevent this from ever reaching consoles. Sad, but true. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- There's not many restrictions. Whatever they are Microsoft and Sony could easily bypass. There are level editors already in games for the PS3 and XBox 360. So this can definitely be done.
