Free Play Friday: Awesometacular Beta Code Giveaway Edition!

Justin Calvert recommends five different betas that you can play for free, and offers up over 45,000 codes to get you into them.

One of the great things about beta tests is that they're free, which makes them eligible for this weekly round-up of free stuff even if the finished games are going to be full price. One of the less great things about beta tests is that they can be difficult to get into if you're not willing to preorder games beforehand, enter strange online contests, or risk carpal tunnel trying to be the fastest Twitter user to cut-and-paste codes distributed by folks (myself included) using them as a relatively easy way to gain a few new followers.

When I decided to write a Free Play Friday about beta tests this week, I also decided that I couldn't do that unless I had some codes to get you into those beta tests alongside me. Fortunately, the game companies involved both agreed and obliged. Apologies in advance if the code wells for any of the below games have run dry by the time you read this. Come to think of it, why are you reading this at all? Shouldn't you be busy claiming codes already?

LittleBigPlanet Karting (PS3) Beta

Invites for the LittleBigPlanet Karting beta were sent out recently and, presumably because I'm a PlayStation Plus member, I was fortunate enough to receive one. For as long as I can remember I've been a fan of games that incorporate level editors and such; I spent more hours than I care to disclose working on my Lunar Explorer level in LittleBigPlanet 2, and I really wanted to like ModNation Racers when it was released a couple of years back. That game didn't grab me at all, though, so I've been eager to see what developer United Front Games does differently now that they're working alongside Media Molecule on LBP Karting.

I downloaded the LBP Karting beta a couple of days ago and, after quickly checking out a couple of the included Story mode races, I dived right into the community area. Even with the limited creation tools that are available in the beta, folks have already created some great tracks. Predictably, I've now made it my mission to do the same.

The creation tools work in much the same way as those in previous LittleBigPlanet games, so it didn't take long for me to create a track that's at least somewhat reminiscent of the Yoshi Falls circuit from the superb Mario Kart DS. I haven't published it yet, but do keep an eye out for it if you decide to claim one of the 10,000 beta codes that we're giving away right now. Oh, did I forget to mention that?

If you're not already in the LittleBigPlanet Karting beta, you're in North America, and assuming we still have some left, you can grab yourself a code using the following link:

The Lord of the Rings Online: Riders of Rohan (PC) Beta

The last time I played The Lord of the Rings Online (originally released back in 2007) I had to pay a subscription fee for the privilege. Turbine's Tolkien-inspired MMO has been free-to-play for a couple of years at this point, though, and has already benefitted from the release of a third expansion pack titled Rise of Isengard since making that jump. The game's fourth expansion pack, Riders of Rohan, is currently scheduled for release in September, and will be open to beta testers this weekend and at various times through the end of August.

Are you in the mood for mounted combat this weekend? Grab yourself a beta code and get instructions on how to redeem it via the following link:

Giveaway: Riders of Rohan Beta Codes

Offensive Combat (Browser) Beta

I first saw the multiplayer first-person shooter Offensive Combat at a press event last month, and was subsequently invited to the closed beta. As I mentioned in the preview that I wrote after the event, Offensive Combat evokes memories of TimeSplitters for me, particularly with its aesthetic, which pits robots against yetis against anthropomorphic lizards in locales that are every bit as varied as the combatants. Depending on the map and mode that you play, the game can be reminiscent of classic Quake in one match and a modern military shooter in the next. I've played a handful of matches since getting into the beta and, other than being unable to shake the feeling that shotguns are overpowered (I definitely recommend including one in your loadout), I'm having a lot of fun with it.

At the time of writing, the Offensive Combat beta boasts four gameplay modes (Free For All, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Capture Point), playable on five very different maps. The beta is scheduled to run through the end of July and, because the game plays in your browser, there's only a small Unity download to deal with before you can start playing.

You can claim an Offensive Combat beta code using the following link:

Giveaway: Offensive Combat Beta Codes

Awesomenauts (PC) Beta

Awesomenauts is one of those XBLA/PSN games that I keep going back to anytime I want to play something competitive without the extraordinary hassle of getting up off the couch to swap out game discs. It's a MOBA through and through, but unlike most games in the genre (League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of Newerth), Awesomenauts more closely resembles a 2D action-platformer than an action RPG. It's an interesting and accessible take on the genre, and one that doesn't charge for additional characters and such--at least not yet. Awesomenauts launched on consoles with six playable heroes, and earlier this month developer Ronimo Games confirmed that the first two additional characters will soon be available free of charge.

No release date for the Steam version of Awesomenauts has been announced yet, but we're told that it should be arriving sometime in the next three to four weeks. You don't want to wait that long to check the game out though, do you?

Didn't think so. Grab yourself a beta code and you could be playing the game today! I need you to promise that you won't be one of those guys who calls everyone else a noob on launch day because you were in the beta though. Deal?

Claim a beta code for Awesomenauts using the following link:

Giveaway: Awesomenauts Beta Codes

If the codes are already gone, or you're in need of some new music, might I also recommend you download the Awesomenauts extended theme song, here:

Music for your ears: Awesomenauts Theme

RaiderZ (PC) Beta

I normally only include games in Free Play Friday that I can recommend you play this weekend, but I can't do that for RaiderZ. Not only have I never played it personally, but the closed beta doesn't start til early next month. I've already redeemed a code myself and, come August 8, I'm going to need some folks to play with. That's where you come in!

We're giving away no fewer than 15,000 codes for the RaiderZ closed beta right now, and in addition to beta access, they're good for a number of in-game items that are exclusive to GameSpot users. How much would you be willing pay for the featherwood guitar pictured below, for example? $10? $250? What if I told you that it's not only a musical instrument for entertaining fellow hunters but also a weapon that you can hit giant monsters with? I know, you'd be willing to pay whatever it cost. Right? No need. It's free!

Claim your featherwood guitar (plus access to the upcoming RaiderZ beta) using the following link:

hehehehehehe this is awesome literature:

Total_mischief SAYS:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm gonna try to explain this clearly so you can understand and keep up with the conversation: suplax dislikes what was shown in the article, says he's eager to play Guild Wars 2, but that he might try out RaiderZ because it looks interesting.

Kr3isen responds by calling him a Guild Wars 2 fanboy.

I respond to Kr3isen by telling him his wanton fanboy-calling is silly.

Then you join in and claim I'm the fanboy, clearly having lost track of the conversation after the first reply.

Now we're here, throwing insults back in forth like a duo of monkeys throwing crap at eachother! Hopefully now you understand the topic and we can both move on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Darnasian SAYS:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now let me show you my point of view:

suplax likes the GW2 and want to give RaiderZ a shot

the other guy says RaiderZ is better( i don't think so) and tells him that ALL the GW2 fanboys are bad ("I swear you GW2 fanboys are the worst") [see there? there is one s after the word fanboy]

This means he may like GW2 but likes RaiderZ more but he kinda dislikes the GW2 fanboys (a matter of opinion-he may had bad experiences with this kind of players) yes he kinda calls suplax a fanboy but from suplax's comment I can't really identify any fanboism towards GW2

Now here's the thing...you replied to him calling him bad because he can't get over the GW2 players ("No. Fanboys like you are the worst. You can't handle people liking Guild Wars and you have to bitch about it because you're stuck with paying MMOs")

Here's the interesting thing...you do not posses any knowledge about his personal experience with this kind of gamers so his statement might be justified

Also he made a bad remark towards the players not GW2...he merely did a comparison between RaiderZ and GW2...given that he is a common human and likes RaiderZ more it's obvious he supports the game he likes

I called you a fanboy because you attacked him without justification

In the end all falls on the personal experience you have with the product

Sorry if there are any mistakes in this comment but I really don't want to check it since is too big

I played LBP Karting (thanks to Gamespot's beta give-away). My conculsion after playing the game for about 20-30mins. Is that it's an identical copy of Mod Nation Racers, with just a hardcore Little Big Planet graphic over hall. Even though it's the same designers, it doesn't sound like they have changed the game in a good way. Mod Nation Racers, had one of the best character and kart creations for a kart racing game. I was impressed with this feature in MNR. You were able to add so many minor details to make your kart your own, and same with your toon. Come to LBP Karting, they went to copy the LBP sackboy selection pages as close to the LBP games. This was a step down from the technical create system we had in the previous game. So most karts and sackboys and girls will look pretty identical after a while. I do not think I will get this title, just because the actual fun parts are dumbed down, which has ruined the experience of me. I have not tried the create-a-level , didn't really care for it in MNR, so didn't care to give it ago in the beta. Hopefully this game will be a decent pick up for many, but for me. I'm deciding on skipping it.

@rickjamesia We ran out of codes pretty quickly for Awesomenauts. I've requested more, but none have been forthcoming.

Kr3isen
Kr3isen

@suplax Actually, not only is Raiderz a better looking game then GW2 its a bigger one as well. I swear you GW2 fanboys are the worst, its like every single 12y old that cant afford a sub has flocked to that overhyped hybrid.

mr-gadgets

@Kr3isen The 12y olds are smart enough to know you should only have to buy a game once to play it.

@Kr3isen No. Fanboys like you are the worst. You can't handle people liking Guild Wars and you have to bitch about it because you're stuck with paying MMOs. And he just said he'd give a try to RaiderZ, still you hate on him ? You have issues man.

I also hate to be the one to break it to you, but the shaders and post process effects in Guild Wars 2 are way superior to RaiderZ. Your first arguement is invalid.

Darnasian

@everyday182 The STFU is more of a bad thing I got used to from MOBA games...

The fastest way to get rid of some troll or annoying kid is just to say STFU and ignore him

I know it's not OK but I really got used to it by using it so many times due to the large casual audience the MOBA games have received lately

everyday182
everyday182

@Darnasian Wow. I have no idea why I read all of that. There are two rules on the internet. One if you like a game your a fan boy. The meaning of the phrase means nothing any more, because if you show the slightest favour to a game your a fan boy. Therefore getting offended at being called one is pointless ( also it is two words and needs a space between them ).  and two anyone using initialisms such as STFU will not be taken seriously by anyone. This is not aimed at you Darnasian, it just so happens your the last one to comment.

@Darnasian Fair enough, I understand your point

Btw my nick is irrelevant, old one, while I was a lot younger, while American Pie (movie) was popular :)

Darnasian
Darnasian

@Sky_Stifler It's a gaming web site...that's all you need to know

I use a lot more variables when it comes to a conversation than most oh the humans generally speaking so I gave them my idea/opinion on the matter

I backed my arguments

They replied to me...some in childish manner so I had to respond in a more intelligent manner than them

In the end I explained why I was of a different opinion

See here's the funny thing:

You said "If I was on your place I would stop with the arguing after the 2nd comment coz arguing about something so irrelevant is not worth my time" but by the likes you gave you clearly used your time to read this kind of conversation although in your opinion it's not worth your time

Just saying

And also...Stifler?...I see what you did there

Sky_Stifler
Sky_Stifler

 @Darnasian I am curious :)

If I was on your place I would stop with the arguing after the 2nd comment coz arguing about something so irrelevant is not worth my time, example above, about fanboys and stuff, and now about who is kid and who is not^^

mr-gadgets
mr-gadgets

@Dareitus Subscriptions were "NEEDED" years and years ago. Nowadays maintaining servers and all that good stuff does not cost enough to justify $15 subs. These company's probably avg $25,000,000 a month and for what expansions and server maintenance? They got you.

But nice try

Dareitus
Dareitus

@mr-gadgets Or the 12year olds aren't smart enough to know that a game with weekly updates, giant servers to maintain, and free expansions requires funding. They don't charge monthly because they can (although they do enjoy it) its because they have to. And before you scream but GW2 DOESNT! Thats because GW2 uses smaller "shard" instances with less players in an area at any given time, and charges for content expansions. "Buy a game once to play it....." until an expansion comes out.Nice try though.

Are you still replying after you said you where done talking responding to me? Ironic don’t you think. I see you still don’t know how to punctuate or how to form a structured sentence. Crawl back in your parents basement and go back to playing WOW little boy. When your testicles drop come back and talk like and man. Right now you’re just a little arrogant kid who just plain doesn’t get it. Did I have to reply to you? You sure knew who I was talking to didn't you. So next time you go on a game website take heed to your own advice and "quit commenting". I am done with you.

I was "grammar police" on my last comment? Sorry dude but you were the one with the big mouth about grammar and it seems you actually know nothing about it...that's why I called you a moron and am still doing it

Go back to kinder garden and learn how to read...he posted a sarcastic comment towards me that was intended to be insulting and he did this with bad grammar...

Since he did that without even being in the conversation in the first place I defended myself telling him to Fk off since HIS SENTENCE WAS FKING CRAP

If you're retarded enough not to see through this and cannot get through your fan boy-ism or whatsoever then I suggest you quit commenting

mark1202
mark1202

The only point is the one at the top of your dunce cap.  You are trying to call him an idiot for misspelling a word that isn't misspelled.  Then you make a comment about him trying to correct someone's "english" but not the British or Australian spelling of an "english" word...thanks for the laugh...this is priceless, unlike your comment, which is worthless.

sammoth
sammoth

 @Darnasian

Ah here we go again with the insults. I am sure you struggled with coming up with that “moron” remark. Not like you have anything intelligent to say. Seeming you can’t even follow the whole comment. My point was you where being an ARSE and about other peoples English. You where being the English Language Police on your earlier comment, I just pointed out that you’re not perfect s. Yet you have the nerve to call me grammar police. I guess reading English wasn’t a strong point of yours in school either.

sammoth
sammoth

 @mark1202

Thats not the point point is he is talking about someone elses English  NOT British and Australian spelling of the word. Thanks for not following the whole conversation though.

Darnasian
Darnasian

 @sammoth WOW XD

Really? What are you? American?

Like mark1202 it's nothing wrong with what I said...I'm from Europe and here we learn British English...so sorry if my version of English doesn't suit you

But here's the thing moron:

I'm sure that when you'll be old enough the best job for you will be Internet American English Grammar Police

mark1202
mark1202

@sammoth Actually, both spellings are correct.  Apologize is the American and Canadian version.  Apologise is the British and Australian spelling of the word.

Maybe you should take your own advice:

"Next time you want people to think your stupid. Don't open your mouth and prove them right."

sammoth
sammoth

 @Darnasian

Quote "@mr-gadgets

I hope English is not your primary language because it sucks hard

Anyway what's your problem if I tell my opinion jackass?"

This is why I said something. If your going to insult someone’s English make sure yours is absolutely correct. You think because it's the internet that gives you an excuse? The internet had nothing to do with it. It was your attitude through this entire thread attacking people.

Yet I am the idiot.

Speaking of idiot it's “Apologized" Not "Apologised".

"Next time you want people to think your stupid. Don't open your mouth and prove them right."

Darnasian
Darnasian

@sammoth I apologised for any mistakes since it was 5 am when I wrote those comments but clearly another idiot had to come over and "talk" after I explained the situation...

My grammar is atrocious? Man you clearly don't use the internet too often...

I'm one of the good cases...

And what's the point of the comment smart ass?

sammoth
sammoth

 @Darnasian

I would not talk about other peoples English when your grammar here is atrocious. Before you pick on people about it learn to structure your sentences and not use words like "Kinda". Swearing to get your point across is immature with no intellectual though put behind the comment at hand. Of course you clearly missed the point of the comment to begin with.

Total_mischief
Total_mischief

@Darnasian Well fair point. However personally I'm impartial to both games as I generally dislike MMOs. The way suplax was called a fanboy made it look like Kr3isen was a fanboy himself, by personally attacking suplax for saying he likes GW2 and will try RaiderZ. It was a personal attack without any logic behind it.  Suplax gets literally insulted for saying he likes one game and will try another one. I just can't find the logic behind that and answered back to Kr3isen assuming he was an actual fanboy (of RaiderZ).

Oha nd btw that argument with " Fanboys like you are the worst. You can't handle people liking Guild Wars "

This kind of argument is so dated that self respecting gamers stopped using it as an excuse to attack other users
