Free multiplayer DLC coming to Arma 3

Arma 3 Zeus places players in the role of a Game Master who can influence mission content.

Bohemia Interactive has announced the first DLC pack for military shooter Arma 3. Named Arma 3 Zeus, the free DLC will feature a new form of multiplayer that allows players to step into the shoes of a Game Master dubbed as Zeus, and influence the online battles of other players.

According to the announcement, the mode takes inspiration from tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons. Players can access play Arma 3 Zeus in specific Game Master scenarios or in the coop, team death match, and sector control modes. The player who assumes the role as the Zeus of the game will be able to watch the battlefield from a bird's-eye view and use a real-time editor, allowing them to change or expand mission content.

The Arma 3 Zeus update will be launched this spring. For more on Arma 3, check out GameSpot's review.

This is going to be pretty awesome. I'm pumped that they also said that you will be able to mod the Zeus it self, so you will get some crazy awesome zeus mods to make this tool even better. Thx to the awesome arma 3 community.

Activision take note, that's how you treat customers, FREE DLC not DLC x4 at double the price the actual games worth, no removing a few maps and holding onto them for a while till you think we should pay more to get the rest of the content already made for the game, this arma makes me happy, let's hope others follow suit, unlikely.

This DLC is gonna be freaking awesome! As long as:

1.Mods and Admins in servers dont just take control and refuse to let a player do it.

2.Trolls don't get to abuse it.

But the possibilities for even something like this are huge. I play Domination MP mode and the ability to make every objective unique, to present challenges in weather and so forth will make MP even more endless fun.

They are doing it wrong. Everyone knows they are supposed to dig up some Arma 1 and 2 multiplayer maps and charge $20 to play them in Arma 3. Amateurs.

They reaping the benefits of DayZ success to issue free DLC in arma 3? I bet they are lol.

Why don't you make a real PvP game mode similar to Planetside 2 that can actually simulate a war, which this game is supposed to do. The only servers i see are weird non-milsim crap like Wasteland and Altis Life, and now this.

They are painfully blind to the potential their own game has. A giant war simulator game mode, similar to Planetside 2 but more realistic, would be the shooter game that I've always wanted. It would be the only shooter I'd need, ever. But who am I kidding, the performance of this game is terrible :(

Oh yes. A player gets to troll the others. XD

Here's hoping the GM gets an option to turns players into seagulls. :P

@Revival125  Yeah the possibilities are endless. You can just host a quick mission with a friend and create anything you want on the go. No need to "hey wait a minute i forgot to add this to the mission". Can't wait.

@hammoud  Wasn't there a lot of milsim type large scale matches in ArmA2?  Did stuff like Wasteland and Altis Life really take over the majority of online play?

I don't know if they are blind though.  It might just be a case of popularity pushing the game away from what the older fans liked, but as a result of the community not the devs.  Large scale realistic simulations of battles does sound very cool to many, but the other stuff certainly appeals to a larger audience.  ArmA was always niche to begin with, maybe it's just now the community has grown and they are playing the game the way they prefer, by no fault of the developers.

I replied first then read other people's replies :).  Looks like many already said the same basic thing :).

@hammoud  I dunno about ArmA3 but in ArmA2 there are servers with a mission mod called Warfare CTI or something. Objective is to capture the island or destroy enemy base. 2 teams, I play on 48 player server on A2, so 24 vs 24, but everyone can have AI teammates that u can control.(usually 12 AI per player) Players choose their commander who can build bases, so at first u have very little but as u capture more towns, commander will upgrade stuff and u can buy tanks, choppers, planes.

It's pretty awesome, probably best you can get to war simulation and what ArmA really has to offer in public servers!

@hammoud  There are some pvp modes out there but if you want real milsim you need to join a milsin clan. Arma 3 alone is not the best game but if you join a unit you will get the bang for your buck. Here is one to check out 25thid.us . We do PvP against other clans as well. Also if you join the right AW invade and annex servers you will find some milsim. Milsim in PVP is hard without a organized grp of ppl.

@hammoud  What about that Crytek game that just came out? Called something like Warzone or Warface. Sounds pretty close to what you described.

@hammoudActually you can already do that with a bit of effort.

Set up sectors, areas and corresponding script / scoring logic, respawn points, timers, etc. in the editor, host your creation as a multiplayer server - done, full scale war on Altis.

Now you "simply" need to find a few (about 60 to 80 I'd say) people to play this with.

Good luck, soldier.

Don't want to do all that by yourself, well, try signing up for a position on ShackTac, MEURealismUnit or another "real warfare simulation" dedicated team and after absolving training you're good to go to participate in meaningful, interactive missions / scenarios.

I'm not part of any of these groups though, but we occasionally use the Mission Control Center (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=19580) and other useful addons to create interactive missions / scenarios, but this new official "DungeonMaster" tool will surely come in handy I assume.

I wouldn't say Bohemia Interactive is "blind" or aren't using their simulation to its full extent because they already do offer all the tools and modding capabilities for the community to create additional content / gameplay mechanics / tools / you name it, by themself.

If you want to play Planetside 2 however, well, just play Planetside 2 then, it's free and there's no real "need" to clone it within Arma 3.

As for performance, if you run it on old hardware it won't magically run good and look pretty at the same time, otherwise check out the countless performance optimization threads on the Steam or BIStudio forums, there might be something in there to help you out.

@hammoud  With the scale and detail ArmA 3 has, it would be impossible to make it run like PS2 the hardware is just not there right now.

hammoud

@holtrocks @hammoud  I don't think it's impossible. Hardware is getting pretty freaking good but their engine is just bad. It simply doesn't utilize current hardware to their fullest.
