Free BioShock Infinite and DmC in January for PS3 PlayStation Plus subscribers

Sony's subscription service continues to offer a great value for PlayStation owners.

Following up on December's offer of a free copy Borderlands 2 for PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony is upping the ante for January. Starting January 2014, PS+ members on PlayStation 3 can download a free copy of BioShock Infinite, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

PlayStation 4 owners will be able to download the indie hit Don't Starve. And Vita owners will be able to download Worms: Battle Island and Smart As...

PS+ is Sony's subscription service that provides several member benefits including access to a rotating "instant game collection." The game's are only available to active PS+ members, and they are generally only available to download for free for a limited time (though once you've added them to your account, you can redownload the game again at any time).

PS+ is mandatory for online play in PlayStation 4 games. The service typically sells for $18 for three months or $50 for one year.

The new DMC looks wack but I'll give it a shot. Who knows? I may even enjoy it.

I am definitely looking forward to this, I had three months PlayStation Plus subscription on my PS3, and now a full year that I put on my PS4. I am really looking forward to this, I completed Bioshock: Infinite on the Xbox 360, and I haven't played Brothers: AToTS and DmC, so it's worth it to still be a member.

Just wondering fellas and gals, if I have the PS+ subscription for a year and have used the code on my PS4, but on the same profile as the one on my PS3, does that mean I have a year subscription on both consoles, to get these games on both consoles? Any help is appreciated.

God damnit, in Europe we get Borderlands 2 (which I already own) instead of Bioshock Infinite (which I don't own)....bad luck.

For all of those wondering about DMC...

Don't listen to the haters.  They make this game sound terrible...  but it's actually a lot of fun.  DMC is well worth a playthrough.

Having played almost all of the DEVIL MAY CRY games (and enjoyed them), DMC is by far my favorite.  Why?  The story.  This is the first DMC game where I actually cared what happened in the end -- where, like a good movie, I got goosebumps during the final battle.  That final battle was classic storytelling at its best.  Yes, combat is somewhat simplified for the series, but it's still a lot of fun -- and clearly meant to be played multiple times while re-playing levels for "hidden" loot.  And while Dante isn't as consistently ridiculously irreverent as previous titles, he's very relateable and still has got and edge; the "swearing war" between Dante and a particular demon was priceless.

The vocal minority that blasted this game on release (and even pre-release) really did DMC a disservice.  DMC is a worthy addition to the DEVIL MAY CRY series if for no other reason than the story is so well done.  Perfect?  No...  but if we want to quibble, none of the DMC titles have even been perfect.

Wow. Cant wait to play DmC....loved the little i played.  I heard Brothers was great and Dont Starve looks like a treat.  So glad i scored the Gamestop $30 year of PS+. If you keep your eyes pealed you can get an amazing deal and pay even less for a Playstation Plus membership.  I got 15 months for 49.99 last summer and another year for $30 a couple weeks ago. Thats less than 3 bucks a month. Im glad i went with Sony for next gen.

So, this is when all the DMC haters who made the net a horrible place to be for months and who claimed they would never buy or play the game quietly realise they quite like it but can never tell anyone...

Huzzah for Infinite, but DMC is m'eh. It's still good to be free, maybe someone else will be able to enjoy it.

Don't know if there's some kind of mix-up or if this post is just talking about the NA PS+ deals, but DmC is available right now - at least in Europe.

Microsoft could really learn from Sony right now! We'll probably get angry birds and Ghost Recon or something

@Jock9 It's good on all of them. Claim all the Vita games just in case you ever get one. I had about 40 games waiting for me when I finally bought one.

CWhidmore

@Jock9 As long as you are using the same PSN account, one PS+ membership will work for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita simultaneously. And you will get free games and discounts on all three consoles.

HipHopBeats

@Jock9PS Plus subscriptions are good for any console, PS3, PS4, Vita as long as it's the same account.

Nope, I don't think they announced the specific date.

My best guess is that it'll be in the next PS Store update, which should be on Tuesday, January 7th.

@moesuir In the end, who really cares? It's still the same game with the same ending. Not even mods can change that.

Darkefka

@moesuir yes i'll have fun playing the inferior version of these game FOR ABSOLUTLY FREE while you get to pay 60$ to play them with slightly better graphics, but yes PSN sucks...

Well we got Borderlands 2 a month before you guys.

So hopefully you'll be getting it in February.

@battlefront1943

I did like DMC for story, and the fact that the cut scenes were so well done, sometimes I almost believed they were real people.

Still, DmC3 still wins for fun and outrageous cutscenes.  And I still prefer DmC3's gameplay, especially since the bosses don't suck.

Oh, and it didn't help anything that in the new game, Vergil's story has no bosses, and he can't do Bloody Palace.  What the hell?  I'd actually rather they had done the lazy thing DmC3 did and just let you play as Vergil through Dante's story.  At least then you'd have something to do as Vergil, rather than just those disappoint DLC levels.

Still, overall I agree.  The new game is good.  Not without problems, but well worth playing, especially if you can download it for free.

@Gomtor You gotta remember that PS4 is not backwards compatible because the entire architecture of the system is different and the PS3 games are not written to function on a PS4. I have a feeling that for the next few months we will only be seeing indie games for free on the PS4, but you can't beat the free games PS3 is getting.

HowlPendragon
HowlPendragon

Because it only has like 30 games out right now.

If they gave it the PS3 treatment we would get every single game for free in less than a year.

@Darkefka @moesuir  psshhhhh...just to let you know, we usually don't pay $60 bucks on PC like console players do on the inferior versions of games and it's more than just "slightly better graphics". Anyway! Those games being no matter what platform is a win in my book. Also never had a problem with PSN so why the beef with it?

PumpkinBoogie

@Conscrumptured@CarpetfluffSimply put and well said. If that makes me a hater so be it (so sue me if I like old, eh?). So it can stay where it's at. And while Bioshock Infinite seems cool, I ain't big on FPS shooter games either....so Brothers for me it is I guess.

@Hellcanwait @isshiah Also, the new PS4 controller is a HUGE step up from the PS3, personally i think it feels better than an Xbox controller now

@isshiah @Hellcanwait What is there to like about the XBox menu? You pay for the console, you pay for the game, you pay monthly just to use the majority of the features of the console and you are STILL bombarded with advertisements every time you turn it on.

keep laughing your ass off.

gddr5 is superior to ddr3 when it comes to handling the data stream for Graphics.

dividebyzero on the techspot site does the explanation way better than I ever could :

It goes back to the nature of graphics rendering and how the polygons are drawn. Sorry if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, but it might be a little easier if I outline the graphics pipeline. I'll use a red coloured font to show the video memory transactions and green for system RAM (probably be better as a flow chart but nvm)
On the software side you have your game (or app) API (DirectX/OpenGL) User Mode Driver / ICD Kernel Mode Driver (KMD) + CPU command buffer loading textures to vRAM GPU Front End (Input assembler) .
Up until this point you're basically dealing with CPU and RAM- executing and monitoring game code, creating resources, shader compile, draw calls and allocating access to the graphics (since you likely have more than just the game needing resources). From here, the workload becomes hugely more parallel and moves to the graphics card. The video memory now holds the textures and the shader compilations that the game+API+drivers have loaded, These are added to the first few stages of the pipeline as and where needed to each the following shaders as the code is transformed from points (co-ordinates) and lines into polygons and their lighting:

Input Assembler (vRAM input) Vertex Shader (vRAM input) Hull Shader (vRAM input) Tessellation Control Shader (vRAM input) (if Tessellation is used) Domain Shader (vRAM input) Geometry Shader (vRAM input)

At this point, the stream output can move all or part of the render back into the memory to be re-worked. Depending on what is called for, the output can be called to any part of the previous shader pipeline (basically a loop) or held in memory buffers. Once the computations are completed they then move to Rasterization (turning the 3D image into pixels):
Rasterizer Pixel Shader* (vRAM input and output) Output Manager (tasked with producing the final screen image, and requires vRAM input and output)

* The Compute Shaders (if they exist on the card) are tasked with post processing (ambient occlusion, film grain, global illumination, motion blur, depth of field etc), A.I. routines, physics, and a lot of custom algorithms depending on the app., also run via the pixel shader, and can use that shaders access to vRAM input and output.

So basically, the parallel nature of graphics calls for input and output from vRAM at many points covering many concurrent streams of data. Some of that vRAM is also subdivided into memory buffers and caches to save data that would otherwise have to re-compiled for following frames. All this swapping out of data calls for high bandwidth, but latency can be lax (saving power demand) as any stall in one thread is generally lost in the sheer number of threads queued at any given time.
As I noted previously, GDDR5 allows a write and read to/from memory every clock cycle, whereas DDR3 is limited to a read or a write, which reduces bandwidth. Graphics DDR also allows for multiple memory controllers to cope with the I/O functions

@Hellcanwait @isshiah 95,590 for me. I'm not so fussed about the tech specs, mainly just the multimedia focus and half baked kinect.

sammoth

@Hellcanwait@isshiah LMAO DDR3 is used in most PC gamming rigs today. GDDR5 is not really a big deal. It helps with higher bandwidths clusters but, is a lot slower.

Hellcanwait

@isshiah@Hellcanwait

same here, i'm leaving 71.458 ach. points behind and i do prefer the Xbox controller.

I just can´t get over the fact that everything is behind a paywall, even netflix and the ancient ddr3 RAM has no place in a next gen console, no Wonder its only doing 720p.
