Former PlayStation Boss Jack Tretton to Cover E3 for Spike TV

Jack Tretton to provide commentary and analysis for E3 2014.

by

Former Sony Computer Entertainment of America President and CEO Jack Tretton will return to E3 this year, but he won’t be speaking for Sony. Instead, Tretton will join Spike TV’s All Access coverage as a special correspondent.

Tretton, who has hosted Sony’s E3 press conference a number of times including last year, will provide commentary and analysis for the big E3 press conferences this year along with Spike TV’s All Access host Geoff Keighley, who first revealed Tretton’s involvement via Twitter.

"Since I dropped the mic last year on Spike I thought it was only appropriate to pick it back up for E3 this year!” Tretton told Kotaku in a statement. “I've been to every E3 but this year I'm excited to see the show through a different lens with the team at Spike. I'll be watching the news and announcements unfold alongside the fans and the rest of the industry, and I can't wait to see the new games that everyone is bringing to the table."

Tretton, who worked at Activision before coming to Sony, left SCEA at the end of March in what was described as a "mutual agreement" between the two parties. He had been at SCEA since 1995, working on the North American launch of every PlayStation platform since the original. Earlier this week we reported that he joined the advisory board of Genotaur, an artificial intelligence development company.

The E3 2014 show floor opens its doors on the morning of June 10, but Microsoft, Sony, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft will hold their press conferences the day prior. GameSpot has compiled a roundup of dates and times for the main press conferences and other events happening during this year's show.

Did they really pick this boring guy to host?

Is Gamespot going to be doing a live stream this year? If so, I hope there aren't anymore of those god damn Samsung commercials

This is the 'top feature story' yet besides my comments, previous one's go back two days?

Gee, I wonder why...

Note to self, skip the Spike TV coverage. It'll be an overly biased mess. His severance contract most likely has a clause that he can't say anything negative about Sony to the media.

I thought Phil did fine. It's a shame he didn't stick around longer though.

This guy should make a return surprise to E3 for a brief two minute announcement. Price drop to $350/ £300 or something cool.

He's a legend as far as E3 goes now & I bet the crowd would just go bananas for whatever he says now.

Infact someone should make a petition just for this.

Does Spike TV even have that good of coverage? I've seen bits of their coverage lasts year but it didn't strike me as impressive........maybe it was just those bits that I came across.....

Aside from that, good for him; still be involved but in a different way; sometimes its a great thing to experience when working in that environment from only one side for so long.

To bad Jact Tretton will never work for M$ and that's a fact. Who would want to work with M$ anyway?

Despite what anyone may feel about Sony: if you hate them, a fanboy, or neutral, Jack always presents himself as a down to earth professional.  It will be interesting to see his commentary during the event.  Spike did a good job nabbing him for this.  A lot of people will want to see what he has to say about the show after his somewhat "mysterious" departure from Sony.

The guy that was kicked to the curb by Sony for reasons no one knows.  I wonder if hes bitter.

I'd like to see him on a panel with Michael Pachter this E3, giving a real business perspective.

The hero of E3 '14 on Spike! Yay! It's gotta be better than what happened last year.

And now he's helping to create SkyNet. Oh dear.

Nice. He seems somewhat down-to-earth... compared to his peers at least. Can't decide how big of a compliment that is, really.

is that the guy that completely destroyed Microsoft and wiped them off the face of the planet last year?

@KingJames1089 Well, working for Sony in that position for so long should really provide him with some actual insight into the business.

@vpacalypse I assume you're referring to a PS4 price cut.

So the guy who was fired by Sony (contract not renewed, if you want to get technical) should do them some sort of favor?  Not sure I see the logic there.  And I doubt Sony wants the face of their E3 presentation to be a guy who doesn't work for them anymore.  They are the ones who kicked him to the curb.

Did you catch any of the infomercials, err, launch coverage of the PS4 or Xbox One? They were painful to sit through on Spike.

@EasyComeEasyGo LOL maybe he wont but I tell you what... If you think MS couldnt fill his pockets you are one blind idiot..... By contractual law Jack Tretton cannot work for a Sony competitor for at least 2 yrs but if MS wanted to scoop him up after that believe me they would and could.

@mos2000 I have no problem with him or Sony. I think he always did well in the Sony press conferences. I do think he will be too biased to serve in this function though. I probably can't speak negatively of Sony without some consequences. We'll see I guess.

@GrayF0X786 you mean the guy that lied and buried the pay for online while no one was paying attention.  Ya, that was him.

But, with his departure contract, severance if you will, will most likely state he can't say anything negative to the media about his former employer. This is standard practice for CEOs or department heads in any industry. Sony must've breathed a sigh of relief when he got the gig. Hell, he may even be on their payroll for this.

@tjkraz @vpacalypse
yes, a ps4 price cut.

He was fired?
I thought he wanted to leave the industry on a high note (which I respect him for).
Why would they fire him, he did such a good job.

he's an asset with his own appeal & influence to playstation than anything else.

He's the ideal man to drop announcements.

I don't see the logic in getting rid of him.

@KiraDEATHNOTE I wonder why??  Maybe it was money issues.  Maybe Sony would have had to cut his salary.......  Its amazing how "dedicated" he was to Sony when they had money but was quick to skip the bill when they probably had salary cuts. That just goes to show you that none of these companies nor executives give a sh1t about any of us.  Its all money my friend........  I'm and Sony and MS gamer and all but Sony fans need recognize that....

bob15x
bob15x

@KiraDEATHNOTE lol no he didn't.  The news article said it was mutual.  At that level, mutual means sony did not want to renew his contract.  He was fired.  They just never say fired when you are that high up.

mos2000
mos2000

@KiraDEATHNOTE You say that based off of what??? No conclusive proof has been published to tell what happened 100%  However the writing is on the wall:

Feb NPD and worldwide stats were released showing that the xb1, at the time had more software attached to each console sold.  That means bigger profit - even though Sony had close to double the consoles sold.  Sony looked at all the low cost/free initiatives they were giving away (which Tretton pioneered) along with the overall bottom line for the company and made some tough decisions immediately thereafter:

- Santa Monica studios along with other Sony devs had massive lay-offs

- Unprecedented price hike in Canada only 3 months after launch

and in the midst of this

- Jack Tretton suddenly leaves with very little info following

Why would he leave so suddenly amidst all the positive press the PS4 was getting unless there's a passive-aggressive "push" for you to exit.  It wasn't to take a break, because 3 months later, you surface somewhere else.... on their "advisory board".

Sorry - in the world of business with publicly traded companies, when a company says XOX is leaving under what they say is a mutual agreement, that's code for; we want you to go, to keep your mouth shut you're getting a nice package...

Again - though we're not privy to all the discussions held behind the scenes, there's enough detail to premise the above. When you think too much out the box and don't reach financial expectations based off those decisions, regardless how close you come - you're the odd man out.  This is even for the good guys like Jack.

Sony overall is doing sh-- on the market.  When they saw that despite the good press, the profits were not as good as the XB1 - they panicked. Trust me - if Jack wasn't asked to go, he would have stayed.

mos2000
mos2000

@bob15x @KiraDEATHNOTE Exactly - he appearantly is a good guy, who's latest initiative to put the players first, made him a fan favorite - but Sony felt it wasn't good for their bottom line.  Everyone needs to remember that this is the MO for all publicly traded companies. Good intentions have to be matched by financial expectations.

Despite the number of consoles they sold and the good press - the board members did not feel this was being met.  Sony was in panic mode around this time, unfortunately Jack was a victim of it.
