Former Battlefield producer would like to see DICE return to future setting

Gordon Van Dyke says a Battlefield 2142 successor "would be amazing," but questions if DICE has "the balls" to leave the modern setting.

by

Former Battlefield producer Gordon Van Dyke would like to see developer DICE leave the "safe haven" of the modern setting and make a new future-set Battlefield game. However, he questioned if the Swedish develop has the courage to do so.

"Battlefield 2142 successor on Frostbite Engine would be amazing," Van Dyke wrote on Twitter (via Pixel Enemy). "But does DICE got the balls to leave the safe haven of a modern war setting? Hope so."

This fall's Battlefield 4 takes place in a modern setting.

Van Dyke worked on Battlefield 2142 and acknowledged that the game came up short with what was possible. Leveraging the power of the Frostbite Engine and effective leadership could make a 2142 successor shine, he argued.

"When I worked on Battlefield 2142, we definitely didn't hit the games [sic] full potential, and I think under the right leadership they could now," he added.

Van Dyke left DICE in 2011 after six years with the company, beginning as a quality assurance tester and later serving as producer on big-budget games like Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Battlefield: Bad Company. He also contributed to an unannounced new franchise at Visceral Games.

He now is an executive producer at Paradox Interactive, where he oversees the War of the Roses brand.

I absolutely LOVED Battlefield 2142!  I loved BF2, but it had balancing issues.  The game was never fixed and by that, they didn't fix stuff like those mortar strikes or air strikes.....can't remember which, that someone could call every minute.  That ruined the game for me.  Seriously, if they had fixed that one thing, it would have fixed the game for me.

BF2143 didn't have those issues, and it was fair and very fun.  It's too bad that it never got as popular as BF2, because it really was a much better game.  A lot of people said 2142 was just a mod, and even if you agree it was, I think it was better than the original.  I am guilty of being a Sci-Fi fanboy, boy really, what else can they do.  Already done the past and the future and modern era, but I sci-fi is on the rise right now.  There are some sci-fi shows coming out.  You've got Star Wars coming out again.  I know they have Battlefront 3, and I'll be on that for sure, but they need to bring the future back.  That is unless Battlefront 3 is basically BF 2143.  Because if Battlefront 3 is just Battlefield with a Star Wars skin, then I'm perfectly happy, but if not, please bring Battlefield back to the future, EA and Dice.  Oh and we do want Dice working on this....not have some other studio do it.

Oh come on- 2142 was a poor man's UT2004, which did everything you could want in a futuristic multiplayer game (UT2004, that is).

Give us a proper sequel to bf1942 already. THAT is the era best suited to Battlefield.

Would prefer a sequel to Battlefield 2142 then Battlefield 4.

Dice easily has the bawls to do it, and they are planning to do it judging by all the easter eggs. It's Ea if anyone doenst have the bawls.

Why not make a Battlefield: WW1 while you are at it?

I definitely want DICE to make BF2143, but I've also been dying for them to do Star Wars: Battlefront. Now with LucasArts gone (DAMN YOU DISNEY!), I don't know how it would happen. :/

I gotta say, I wouldn't mind a proper remake/sequel to BF1942, Vietnam, and one set in the Korean conflict using Frostbite3, though. \m/

Error. Battlefield Bad Company and Battlefield Bad Company 2.

A BF2142 sequel might make me consider breaking my EA boycott...

i think it'd be awesome. they'd be free of the constraints of contemporary technology. don't get me wrong, i loved battlefield bad company 2 (i liked battlefield 3 less, but it was still good), but more imaginative settings and gamemodes (titan mode was awesome!) would be great.

more creativity is never a bad thing. i'd also find it more appealing to look at than just another modern shooter, where the colour palette is pretty set.

making this game wouldn't have to mean battlefield got less realistic. there's fantasy and then there's realistic possibility. as long as it's not just magic staves and laser cannons without any explanation where they came from, i think it could be really interesting.

I still use my BF 2142 Fragmat to this very day.

I actually really liked 2142, especially assaulting the Titan Airships. Moving them was a lag fest but I do remember once having the two of them lined up decently close to each other, trading broadsides. It was epic, especially because it made us feel like pirates when our dropships dropped us on the enemy decks.

judging by the comments...looks like a future setting would be welcome. Not for me tho. I just cant seem to relate to futuristic games. Haven't played BF2143 tbh but I just never bothered. Looks like I'm one of a few hyped for BF4 tho.

I keep thinking to myself - as I play the game - how perfect an old-timey version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" would be for this.

Battlefield 2143.  Bad Company 3.  Hell, another WW2 game.  Any of those still sound far more exciting to me than BF4, which for me is simply another modern shooter to ignore.

go back to the past... Never liked futuristic settings and the modern setting is so played out.  I can never get sick of WW2 and Vietnam era games though.

A followup to 2142 would be nice.  I really did like it's visual design.

DICE has no balls. They had them, once. But they were stolen by EA, with their wierd ball fetish...

Still, a future setting instead of a modern one would be great. I get enough "Modern" in my life, as I live in the modern-day.

DarkZxion

I think they do have the balls. It's just EA has a firm grasp around them and is not afraid to squeeze and pull to make them do what they want.

BF2142 was the last Battlefield game I played. I loved it. I agree [one vote for pie], Black Hawk Down is overdone; I would enjoy more curiosity in atmosphere and aesthetics of a new war set in distant future.

BF2142 was an amazing game I loved it even more then BF2  Dice really needs to remake the game just like they did with 1942

I can't claim to have played BF2142.

One potential issue that arises with futuristic settings is lack of variety in weapons, vehicles, outfits. Currently there are a huge variety of guns and accessories in BF and COD with slight differences between them. Same with vehicles for BF.

If you do a futuristic setting, you need to come up with a realistic variety of weaponry. Not just the light/medium/heavy tank, or light/medium/heavy machine gun.

@rangeraa WWII and Vietnam are so overdone, plus theres nothing creative you can do with history.  In the future you can imagine almost anything!

its EA who doesnt have the balls.

mrklorox

@bkohary While it's good to offer lots of variety, it's important not to make your dozens of guns feel mostly the same. BF2142 did go the light/medium/heavy route with weapons, but each gun felt very different. I would still like to see more gradations and customizations between those light/medium/heavy archetypes if a future-setting BF gets another chance.

I'd have to disagree.. There hasn't been a good Vietnam game since the first Vietcong.  Also shooting Nazis in the face never gets old for me although I understand that not everyone feels the same way.
