Forget microtransactions: Dungeon Keeper free on GOG.com

GOG offers up a bunch of classic games for Valentine's Day.

It's not this one.

Online retailer GOG.com is giving away the original Dungeon Keeper for free this weekend.

The version available on GOG is specifically the Gold Edition of the 1997 classic, which comes with the Deeper Dungeons expansion included as part of the package. The game's arguably inferior (but prettier) sequel Dungeon Keeper 2 is also available with a 75 percent discount for $1.49 (approximately 90p).

Still: Both Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 have had a better reception than the microtransaction-fueled Dungeon Keeper reboot for mobile, which has been frustrating longtime fans of the series since its release, including original series creator Peter Molyneux.

The giveaway is part of GOG.com's Valentine's Day sale, which is offering some decent discounts on some classic titles: System Shock 2, Alpha Centauri, and Syndicate Wars are available for $1.49, for example.

Have to f---ing repost because even though I was editing my post, they told me I couldn't do it.  Assholes.  Anyway, did a retake on the GOG site and sure enough, they don't even carry the bloody game.  Yea, way to go GOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Asswipes...............

What the f--- are you talking about?   It's not even on GOG.  They only carry DK2.  Don't believe me, go to GOG and do a search.  It's nowhere to be found.  So no, I won't be singing the praises of GOG any day soon.

A fantastic way to give EA and their rip-off version of DK the middle finger!

This is a very wonderful and inspiring way to tell EA to fuck off.

GOG.  What gaming should be.

So now both Dungeon Keeper games are "free to play"

However, this one has no microtransactions.  I love it.  A middle finger right to the face of EA.

Hey hey hey! Don't forget the huge bunch of Dungeons & Dragons games for 80% discount on GOG! Those games altogether must offer something around 1200+ hours of content and while they're old, they're still hugely entertaining! My favorites of the bunch are the Neverwinter - games and I just keep on wishing and wishing that someone would make more such games.

This is a big FU to EA from CD Projekt Red.

It's starting to actually get cliche to say this given how consistently awesome they are but...I love CD Projekt Red.

I could never finish that game back in the day. Last level always destroyed me. Then my friends 8 year old brother who was half age was able to beat it. I was demoralised to say the least.

You can't deny that CD Projekt are talented opportunists.

@Thanatos2k  EA made this promo possible. GOG couldn't do this without EA's approval.

@_Judas_ we shall see - my copy of DK2 from them works on one of my Win7 PCs flawlessly and the other it crashes frequently. I'm sure it is a hardware driver incompatibility with the setup - but while GoG do their best I wouldn't say it's 100% guaranteed on every PC

@TashunkoSapa  If they were opportunists, they would've charged for the 10gb patch for The Witcher 2 back in 2012.

@TashunkoSapa  And what do they have to do with this?  Just curious.  They didn't make the game and they aren't giving it away.

They run GOG.com like how valve runs steam .... Idk if it makes them opportunist but they are the ones giving it away. ... A dig at EA for trying to monetize everything though? ... Definitely.

@aermeus @dragonkantus4@Riddick123@TashunkoSapawhether it be part of marketing strategy or not, This isn't the first time nor second but multiple times they have gave away free games to all users and to my knowledge if I'm not mistaken, GOG still has to pay some kind of transaction fee even for giving away free games and I read this from somewhere on GOG during 1 of the previous giveaway.

@dragonkantus4 @Riddick123 @TashunkoSapa  He is eluding to the fact that gog.com is owned by CDprojeckt...personally, I think its awesome...CDProjeckt have been outspoken over the years about some of the trash going on in the gaming industry...here was an opportunity for them to say FU to EA and there predatory microtransaction models in an app that shouldn't even qualify as a "game."  I agree they are smart tho...there is a little of both of good will and savvy marketing going on here.  The Witcher 3 will be competing against Dragon Age Inquisition most likely later this year and anything that wins more customers their way is a good move...although, personally, considering the recent track record, I doubt it will be much of a choice...ill buy witcher 3 early on to support the company but will wait to buy inquisition when it is bargain bin in a couple of years (frankly because of my mistake spending $70 on DA2).
