For Little Big Planet 3, Sony's Getting Development Help From the Community

Sony is co-developing the Sackboy platformer with the help of members of the franchise's active level-making community.

Earlier this year, Sony announced the return of LittleBigPlanet, the quirky platformer that champions user-generated content. The new game, LittleBigPlanet 3, will be co-developed by Sony XDev with the help of around 20 members of the game's large and active community.

Speaking at a recent Sony event in New York, Tom O'Connor, senior producer at Sony XDev, said the studio was so impressed with some of the LittleBigPlanet 2 community creations that they contacted some of the players responsible with job offers. "One of our favorites was the guy who made a first-person shooter in LBP 2," O'Connor said. "We reached out to him and a few others via the PSN and asked them to come to Sheffield in the UK and help us make LBP 3."

Within days of the E3 announcement, Twitter lit up with the hashtag #lbp3wishes as the LBP community began discussing what new features they'd like to see implemented in the new game. O'Connor says many of the suggestions are already in the works, like an in-game power-up creator. The game's hero, Sackboy, has had a range of different power-ups in previous games, but now players will finally be able to design their own. Sackboy will be able to carry these around with him in his "sack pocket."

LBP 3 will also feature over 60 new content creation tools, as well as three new characters: Swoop, Toggle, and Oddsock. Toggle can move between being big and small; he can push heavy blocks and obstacles, but also fit through small gaps and catapult through the air. Swoop can fly, making it easy to access hard-to-reach places, and he can also pick up objects and characters (with the exception of Toggle). Oddsock, a four-legged character, is proficient at wall jumps and slides.

The goal, as with other games in the series, is to inspire the LBP community to keep creating new content. "Whenever we try out new features, it's always with the community in mind," O'Connor said. "They get access to exactly the same tools that we use to make the game."

According to O'Connor, LBP 3 will be the easiest game in the series for players to get into, even if they've never played an LBP game before. The new characters will allow for local and online multiplayer, and there'll be interactive tutorials--voiced by Stephen Fry--to guide players through the content creation tools. In addition, all 8.5 million levels created by the community from LBP 1 and LBP 2 will be available, retouched, and upgraded for the PS4.

"LBP is very physical," O'Connor says. "People usually need very little explanation when they start playing. They just get it."

LittleBigPlanet 3 is out on PlayStation 4 this November.

Its funny because I remember in one of the news stories posted a day or two back, someone actually jokingly commented that Game Devs will next start using the community's help to develop games. And out comez this story !!!

That sounds like a good idea, I should do that as well. Oh wait, my previous games suck I don't have community support. :(

They did this with Little Big Planet 2 as well, they hired the best creators in the game to make good levels for the story mode and DLC packs :P

What I wonder is, how much more are we allowed to put into levels? I hope like 4X more things in 1 level.

I'm still not excited for this game. LBP has always intrigued me, but it's never really hooked me. I'm sure I'll give LBP3 a go anyhow.

P.S. Laura Parker back at GS or just freelance? Betting on the latter. Or that's an error.

Sony: we are out of ideas let's grab ideas from gamers then sell it for 70$!!!!

Something occurred to me: presumably LPB3 will require a PS Plus subscription to play it on-line, since that's a thing with the PS4 now.

Sony's new strategy is to get the community to buiild their games for them. Just look at Landmark. Community labour.

I loved Little Big Planet but the problem with them is that it took so long to load levels that it made me very hesitant to try levels with how long I had to wait just to play it.

The one thing that will get me to buy Little Big Planet 3 is if I can load and play levels quickly including the old levels.

This might be the game to make me get a PS4. I love LBP but playing with Project Spark the team needs to really step their game up. Project Spark does lack LBP's charm so hopefully they keep that going.

Yo GS, you should fix the info box thing, it's lying. This game is coming to PS3 too and it's not made by Media Molecule, it's made by Sumo Digital (which probably explains why they need help making the game).

Is there any of the more secret news about the LittleBigPlanet Hub yet?

Yup I remember that. Great way to get the community involved and take their gaming experience to another level.

@Mr_AJ On PS4 yes, but on PS3? I don't think so. It would be a slap in the face for LBP1 and LBP2 fans if we can't play this one online.

I wonder if PS Plus will be required to play Destiny online on PS3. If it isn't, I think it will be the same thing here.

@xboxdynasty8 You're just annoyed because Microsoft would rather tell you what and how you want to play instead of actually asking you.

@Tiwill44 didn't know that info, but what are Media Molecule working on?

@Tiwill44 I haven't really looked into LBP3 since what they showed at E3 didn't really impress me much (the only thing that did was the improved depth compared to 1 and 2), so I didn't even realize it was being made by Sumo Digital instead of Media Molecule. I think my interest has fallen just that little bit further now.

@Tiwill44 @Mr_AJ  Right, I should've specified the PS4 version will require a PS Plus subscription, I didn't think the PS3 version would.

I guess I'll need to subscribe to PS Plus once I get a PS4.

@Halloll @Tiwill44 they are working on an unannounced PS4 game. They posted a teaser the other day but it was just some glitch from the game with techno music on top.
