First Shadowrun Returns gameplay surfaces

New video shows almost 20 minutes of footage from upcoming turn-based RPG.

Harebrained Studios has debuted the first in-game footage for turn-based isometric role-playing game Shadowrun Returns.

Developer Harebrained Schemes has uploaded almost 20 minutes of footage from an alpha build of the game, showing studio co-founders Jordan Weisman and Mitch Gitelman creating a character and getting into fights.

The video also details the game's dialog system, cover mechanics, and both solo and party combat.

Shadowrun Returns is one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns, setting a target goal of $400,000 but raising over $1.89M in total. The game was originally due to be released in January but was delayed because of the studio's desire to implement a more ambitious set of features made possible thanks to the game's impressive budget.

The game is now due to be released this summer for the PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

I only just heard about this, and I'm already psyched.

I loved the SNES game, and didn't think they'd make another one after that appalling online shooterey thing.

Made my day, THANK YOU

GOG and Gamersgate (DRM-free) release, please.

Those that are saying they will need to port it to console to make a profit. The brilliant thing is with kickstarter they don't have to at worse they break even with this game and ensure that everyone at the office gets paid for their work thanks to the 2 million raise nearly.

That's assuming no one else buys this game and they just have to give the kickstarter people everything they promised.

hmmm, I'm a little underwhelmed by the art design, it looks very generic. although I wouldn't be surprised if if was intentional, to match the retro gameplay. either way, this looks reeeaally fun. definitely gonna keep my eyes out for this one.

Looks deliciously old school and Shadowruntastic! I have faith in this game beyond the shadow of a doubt.

Damn this really looks awesome! The graphics (i love that art style) , the sounds (reminds me of Fallout 2)  and the turn based combat are all a "must have" for me. Too bad i was slow-ass and didn't manage to pledge in time :(   But i really must have this game.

"Aztechnology."

I see what you did there.

Anyway, I am so excited for this. Shadowrun on 360 was such a poor and failtastic iteration of the series.

I wouldn't mind getting this game despite the fact it's cyberpunk. At least it's not Steampunk (hate steampunk)!

The gameplay looks really fun, especially with the fantasy things thrown in there.

Omg! This game... this AWESOME game!
I can't believe they finally decided to make a sequel after what? 20 some years?! Crazy stuff...

I hope the sequel is as crazy as the first game. That one was really unique far as gameplay went. The story was pretty trippy in its day too.

Nice. The gaming industry could really use more cyber punk. Both of the older games were pretty awesome.

Having played the pen and paper game back in the very early 90's, I never felt that any of the Shadowrun video games ever truly captured the experience quite right. It's lore is honestly damn near tailored for a video game adaptation, so it's mind blowing that nobody has gotten it right. People remember the SNES and Genesis versions fondly, but I just couldn't get into either of them, which could have benefited from Chrono Trigger or FFVI style gameplay mechanics. I probably wont ever have the opportunity to play Shadowrun Returns, but at the very least, I hope it's ambitious enough to spark more interest in the series. From both players and developers alike. FASA could license the IP out to a really great developer in the future and maybe we could finally get the massive, free roaming cyberpunk world that fans deserve.

All good, but particle effects (magic, bullets) look outright awful by today's standards. Maybe it's a trade off that had to be made to port it to Android/iOS. I so wish this was a PC exclusive...

Will it REALLY be released this summer?? Seems too soon. When did the development start?

Now this game will be the best thing I have seen in a while if they kept it anything like the SNES and genisis games which were both differant in many ways but the same universe and concepts.

As for adding in voice overs as some are ranting about.. No! just do not do this. Seriously use some imagination for a change and dont rely on voice overs to keep you immersed. I feel the problem with many of todays games is that alot of them have crappy voice acting and it ruins the experience more than it helps it. Or they have good voice acting but its the same voices you have heard hundreds of time and before you know it your imagining the character as Goku from DBZ or Spike from cowboy bebop.. No...Just No! I hope no voice overs come into play .

I have been waiting a long time for a true follow up to shadow run and hopefully this title hits the mark and doesnt change too much.. I use to play the original two titles alot and repeat plays were not a problem.. At least the diablo-esque top down view is still there so its looking good, Now if we can still hack into computers and enter underground brawling arenas we will be good to go.

Look at Star Citizen's base male character . You'll be able to customize your character from this default character (Rendered in CE 3) like Bioware's Shepard.

I was super excited until I noticed there's no voice acting. That just ruins like 75% of the immersion and storytelling capabilities for me. Come on guys, it's not that expensive to hire some voice talent to do like 1 month of acting.

@nate1222 If you look at their kickstarter and probably their official website, they'll say it's DRM free.

@manio22 Head over to their website.  Pre-orders for the game are already up, and they have 3 versions to choose from.

@spoonybard-hahs Ha ha... no, not really.  It wasn't given a fair chance. The fact that it still has a diehard community speaks volumes.

@timdogg42069

Not to mention the interface is completely designed around mouse and keyboard. Obviously controller support could work given time but that is just another hurdle for the developer.

@timdogg42069

It actually is for the time being. The crowdfunding was to raise money to produce a PC/ Tablet game.

Maybe if the game sales are great, the devs would consider a PSN/XBL port post release, but so far it's PC/Tablet exclusive.

@Creature_69 If you want an open ree roaming game with the exact original character creation, then: shadowrun Online might be more your thing.

Liscening his game to a developer, won't happen, he already spend way to much time and money to get his own game back, he probably wont mess that up again, even more so after the 2007 dissaster

@MooncalfReviews That's actually where a considerable amount of the development costs go to. Voice acting is incredibly expensive--even more so if the company actually uses professionals.

@MooncalfReviews Olddschool games ddidn't have any voice acting and they were great games because of their mechanics. You sound like a noob.If you want voice acting go watch a movie

Kickable
Kickable

@MooncalfReviews it's a kickstarted game, there's probably tons of things they wanted to do but can't.  I don't mind it, voice overs would be low priority for me, especially when every other aspect of the game is far from cinematically immersive anyway.  i'd bet it's not a dealbreaker either to the other people who've been begging for a new Shadowrun game period

RogueShadow0618

@MooncalfReviews Did you miss the fact that it's an ALPHA build?  How many Alpha build games have you seen that had ALL the features the final build has?

Monopoman

@cfisher2833 @MooncalfReviews

Especially in an RPG with potentially a 100 hours of content. I mean voice acting for a few cut scenes and some random phrases in something like say God of War is far less intense then in your average RPG if you insist on voice acting a large majority of the dialog.

@Seifer24 Movies don't offer interactive narative, RPG builds or gameplay. If you like reading so much, go read a book?

And seriously, who uses the word "noob" anymore? What are you 14?

@Kickable Oh it's certainly not a deal-breaker for me; I just wish it wasn't a little bit JRPG in the conversation department.

@Cloud_imperium @The_Last_Paladi @daveydsurveys First off, Star Citizen got PLENTY of coverage on Gamespot when it was announced.  When the game actually get completed, I am sure it will get covered by Gamespot again.  Post your Star Citizen comments during that time and stop pimping out the game on this Shadowrun coverage.  Second, you don't realize that you make Star Citizen look insignificant when you post it on a topic that has NOTHING to do with it.  The only thing thing you accomplished on here was to make an argument about your defense in talking about the game rather than bringing attention upon the game itself.

Cloud_imperium

@The_Last_Paladi @Cloud_imperium @daveydsurveys You know what .? I myself is backer of Shadowrun Returns and check my comments I am very excited about it . I am also backer of Star Citizen and Torment . You may not be interested by people like MAD_AI are interested for news about Star Citizen and gamespot won't cover that so I am sharing that . This page is too long for you to post your comment any where and ignore what you don't want to see but puking around everywhere is not gonna help . See plenty of space for your comments right ,?

The_Last_Paladi

@Cloud_imperium @daveydsurveys I think you are the one who should be moving along.  Don't try t use Shadowrun to pimp out Star Citizen.  This isn't topic isn't focus on crowd funding, it is focus on the Shadowrun game.

Cloud_imperium

@LesserAngel @Cloud_imperium Yep lot of people said that . It's base character . Rest of the characters will be driven by this very model . And this is not artwork , this is Real model Rendered in CryEngine 3 and currently in Pre alpha stage . His eyes were little bigger so we pointed out it on Roberts Space Industries site and they fixed that in few hour :-)

@MooncalfReviews @Seifer24 Fine! Don't watch a movie. Play Dragon Age 2 or something. Reading isn't a sin, but most younger players treat it as such. And before you start thinking I'm in my fifties, no, I'm 28. :)

The reason why almost all new RPGs have lackluster writing and story are voice-overs. Simple need to voice every single line of text constraints developers in telling interesting and expansive stories. RPGs are played using imagination and they end up being much better games for it.

The_Last_Paladi
The_Last_Paladi

@MooncalfReviews @Seifer24 Your insult doesn't even make sense.  You suggest he is old by the use of the word noob, then you call him 14 years old...

Anyways, if you don't like reading that much, then RPG is probably not the choice of genre you should be playing...
