First PS4 screenshots for Project Cars, what devs say is the "most authentic" racing game ever

Check out some new images of the PlayStation 4 version of Slightly Mad's upcoming racing game.

by

Developer Slightly Mad Studios (Need for Speed Shift, World of Speed) today released the first images of the PlayStation 4 version of its upcoming race game, Project Cars. They look beautiful, but that's not much of a surprise, considering some of the gorgeous footage of the game we've seen in the past. You can see more images on the PlayStation Blog.

The core driving experience for Project Cars, Slight Mad says, will be the "most authentic on the planet." To that end, the game includes a time of day and weather system, as well as various online and community features like time trials and competitive multiplayer. To bolster the authenticity of the racing experience, Slightly Mad took thousands of reference photos of real-world tracks, recorded height information, and performed "laser scans." In addition, real drivers like Ben Collins and Nicolas Hamilton played early versions of Project Cars and provided feedback, Slightly Mad says.

Project Cars launches this November for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Wii U. Slightly Mad has previously described the game as the "most technically advanced racing game on the planet." More details about the game's cars and tracks, as well as career and online modes, will be shared in the future.

The game also is one of the first PS4 games to use Sony's virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus. "Finally, you're going to really feel what it's like sitting in the driving seat of a high performance machine as you look around the cockpit, glance left and right as you overtake an opponent, and get an exhilarating sense of speed as you scream down the finishing straight," the studio said. More information about Project Morpheus support for Project Cars will be announced later.

PC Gamer= Give me graphics, thats all i want, need to put this million dollar GPU to some use.

Console Gamer= Give me games for a machine designed for that, if it looks better then PS2/PS3 im happy. Give me good games dammit.

What is the car roster? Are the tracks licensed? Can we tune the cars? Can we upgrade them like GT/Forza? I've got questions, and no I don't like buying a game with cars that's a sim and you can't tune, tweak and upgrade to make it how you want it. This launches in Nov, a whole year later than it was supposed to come. They need to start talking about what the game is about, please don't just be series of races in locked cars(cannot upgrade or tune) and only time you have a real race is driving a purpose built race machine...that's boring. There's something fun in buying an E46 M3 then losing some weight, adding fat rubber to the rear, toss in a stiff road race suspension and hitting the track.

I'm a bit confused.  Isn't Sony's VR stuff still a long ways away?

That grass looks real. I am almost frightened by it.

Screenshot looks good, will get it for both my pc and ps4.  However, I'm almost sure the ps4 version will have aliasing issues (4x txaa for pc, it looks yummy), textures won't be as crisp, and the ambient occlusion will be missing.

Apparently the developer hasn't tried i Racing.  He would lower his voice a notch.

so this is a PS4 screen shot ? very good!!!!!!!!!!!! all those idiots saying PS4/XBOX ONE are barely above PS3/360 in performance i will like to see who last gen console will output such graphics

Looks cool, but the over the top self-congratulations are kind of a turnoff.

Are these guys owned by EA? If so no sale, looks promising though

They should work more on creating a fun game that looks this good ( or as good as they say it will be).  I loved the destruction derby games !

Awaiting the article created by Makuch with the headline being "PROJECT CARS 1080P/30 FPS for PS4 game Project Cars is " the best we could do on the hardware."

With the comments being in a huge uproar.

@WolfgarTheQuiet  Comment total fail because Project CARS started on the PC, designed/worked on by PC gamers and had NOTHING to do with consoles in the first place. It was started by people who were passionate about racing games and didn't want crippled PS3/360 console hardware to hold themselves from realizing their dream.

The fact that it later got  picked up and is now coming to consoles would not even have been possible without PC gamers promoting this game for the last 2 years.

@SavageEvil  Its a simulation game thats what kind of customization comes with it, its not not need for speed underground haha

@SavageEvil The tracks are all intended to be licensed, agreements are currently being finalised for some.

As for tuning, there are no upgrades but there's a full setup screen where you can tune everything from tyre pressures to intake restrictor sizes. It even supports asymmetric setups for ovals and the like. Tyre compounds can of course be changed too, softer tyres will give more grip at the expense of wear and ease of overheating.

There's no E46 M3 and no upgrades, but there's the E92 M3 GT4, which already has less weight, fat rubber and stiff suspension. The car selection is focused around track-ready cars and racecars, so the 'standard' upgrades you'd fit in other games are stock. No buying of cars either, the career is about earning drives with race teams, while mutiplayer and free race already have everything unlocked from the start.

@nomadsalt  Any wheel in the last 5 years will work and every wheel supported by PS4 if thats what you are getting it on.

@hystavito They're building in support, so that when the hardware is ready and released, it'll work with the game. Until then, the same VR support allows PC players to use Oculus Rift or even simple headtracking solutions like TrackIR.

@UnstoppableKARL  Who cares about graphics, it looks better then shift 2, thats good enough.. Got a PC to run it but will get in on PS4

@madracing Several of the SMS staff are iRacing subscribers - they are all sim fans after all - and they still stick by their word.

Outside of the physics and audio (the latter of which is by the same guy doing Project CARS' sounds), iRacing does lack in some areas of authenticity too. Endurance races are an issue due to the lack of driver swaps, there's not even an attempt at emulating a driver's career, and even little touches from Project CARS like helmet cam and the simulation of how wearing a helmet muffles sounds are not present in iRacing.

@daviz88  k....the xbox one is still barely above 360.... it has been a known FACT that the PS4 can produce 1080p standard and yes will look similar to pc games. no im not a sony fanboy i love my xbox 360 but microsoft fucked up their hardware so hard. just tired of people sticking up for the xbox one when its shit.

Mmm. All this picture demonstrates that it at least can go 1 FPS. Nex-gen powa.

@beuneus12 No, they were contracted to make the NFS Shift series but decided to crowd-fund this game instead of making another NFS - no interference from EA at all this way.

@bldgirsh I wouldn't bet on it - 60fps is looking very much feasible.

@pez2k_

I have an iRacing account, and it lacks in a lot more than just that. As a diehard fan of David Kaemmer simulations since I first played the original NASCAR Racing back in 1995, it's been disappointing to see how little progress iRacing has made with regards to truly realistic physics since those earlier efforts. I actually prefer some of them to iRacing.

For a professional-level racing simulation that is priced as such, the lack of so many details a real bummer. There are other simulations that don't cost nearly as much that hit on things that iRacing lacks.

@thorshammer9944  all of the new systems can theoretically produce 1080p games, it's whether or not they can also cram in all those graphical details and apply some sort of anti aliasing at the same time. I agree XBone sucks, hopefully in 10 years when internet speeds increase the cloud will kick in and save it.... LOL

tframp420

@thorshammer9944  I guess you missed when one of the greatest programming minds in games history (John Carmack) said how eerily close in specs the PS4 and Xbox One are...
I guess you know better though.
Once MS gets their dev tools fixed/devs learn to use them, in combination with DirectX12, they will be even more close than they are now if not even better.
Besides, what does PS4 have? Faster RAM? A GPU that is one step higher?
Saying the "One is barely above 360" just proves how much you don't know what you're talking about.
Carry on children.

@thorshammer9944  "and yes will look similar to pc games."

Please enlighten me more about this inability to go above 1080p and 60 FPS. That was a very uneducated statement if I've ever seen one.

@justerthought
You pretty much wasted all your time typing all that. I know the difference between software and hardware.
The most amusing part of the OP was his claims that the One is barely above the 360.
There is a reason the Xbox isn't going to use Mantle even though it's AMD based. Because Microsoft had DirectX12 planned all along which I believe will help more than people give it credit.
By the way, as far as I'm concerned it's PC, Microsoft, Nintendo, then Sony...
I like all types of games on all platforms so fanboyism here.
Do I prefer ones over others?
Yes.
I already have my own custom built PC that destroys all 3 (WiiU included) even though I desperately need a GPU upgrade.
So why do I care if Sony has a bit more powerful of a machine when I'd rather play Forza and Halo over GT and what? Killzone?
Controller (opinion) and Network is better as well.
I believe the One is the better out of the box all around experience, GUI included.
Bury my head in the sand?
lol
Never.

@tframp420 @thorshammer9944

That's a lame crutch your relying on there to bury your head in the sand. John Carmack is clearly biased. He is too close to MS due to him focussing mainly on PC games. The guy deserves credit for past innovation but his recent views are overrated. His comments about the PS4 and XB1 being close is simply referring to the fundamental similarity which even surprised me. The 8GB RAM, same optical drive, same hard drive size, same USB 3, similar CPU and GPU. It was as if MS and Sony had colluded to avoid an expensive arms races. That collusion was actually the result of them both using AMD. Information was bound to be leak back and forth via the AMD engineers who worked closely with both parties.

But the reality of the situation is very different due to how the spec is implemented and what components are used, making the machines very different in graphics performance. An F1 race car has four wheels just like a street car but you would not claim they a equal. For John Carmack to ignore that fact is either sinister bias or complete ignorance of the hardware and its tech. We know he is not stupid so it's sinister bias to play down any difference to help MS. If you cannot see that then you are the one who is going to suffer. Reciting it as a crutch to justify the lame XB1 is just desperate and proves that you're the ignorant one, gullible enough to swallow it without question.

Dev tools, drivers and DirectX12 are all software. All they can do is optimise the usage of the actual hardware in the box, but the hardware is cast in stone and has a physical limit that cannot be surpassed. Yes the XB1 will improve slightly and in 3 years time may even match PS4 performance at launch, but by then devs will be fully utilising all the superior hardware in the PS4 allowing it to do stuff way beyond the XB1.

The sooner you xbox fanboys realise that the xbox brand has been hijack, the sooner you'll realise the truth. The XB1 hardware and its architecture is designed to support a kinect controlled multimedia TV box that also plays games, in order to try and capture the TV market in the living room. Gaming performance has suffered as a result. The XB1 is more like a multimedia PC than a games machine. It has the same heavy OS running DDR3 RAM. In order to make a multimedia PC play next gen games, you need to instal a powerful GPU and lots of GDDR5 RAM, but that costs money. The XB1 has to keep the price down to console levels, so does not have the powerful GPU and lots of GDDR5 RAM. Gaming requires the GPU to have access to fast RAM, so in order to compensate, an ESRAM cache was devised to improve memory usage, but it can never match proper GDDR5 RAM and the XB1 GPU had to be trimmed in size in order to fit the ESRAM and its move engine chips onto the APU with the CPU and GPU. As a games machine it's a really poor hardware design.

This results in the PS4 being vastly superior for games due to Sony tailoring its hardware design specifically towards the optimisation of gaming. This leaves the XB1 looking very lame and poorly designed as a games machine when compared to the PS4. There is no escaping that fact by burying your head in the sand with quotes from John Carmack.

@tframp420

One guy's statement about the power difference between the X1 and PS4 vs the dozens of articles and tests and evidence that suggests otherwise? LOL carry on child.

mrsec84
mrsec84

@tframp420 Carmack said they were close, not eerily so.

It's all relative, if you compare 360, PS3, Wii U, Xbox One & PS4 to each other then Xbox One is closest to PS4, but it still has a GPU with half the Fill Rate, 50% less Stream Processors & Texture Mapping Units & RAM that's half the speed of PS4.

Hell Kojima originally said PS4 & Xbox One's specs were very close, yet Ground Zeroes still runs at 2.25X a higher resolution, with more effects on PS4.

The only multiplat games that run to parity on PS4 & Xbox One are ones that have been gimped on PS4.

DX12 isn't going to close a physical hardware performance gap, people like you love to ignore the fact that both consoles are still early in the development when it comes to their APIs, PS4 will get just as much optimization as Xbox One, the fact PS4 actually has a more efficient memory set-up actually means there's probably even more scope in that area compared to Xbox One.

@bldgirsh @thorshammer9944  Fuck graphics, thats not what games are really about. I can go buy 1000 dollar gpu right now, but why, so fuck graphics. Instead i got PS4 to go with my Mid range PC and the other half of cash was spent on good times in town. LOL 1000 gpu, yous fellas must live with moms and dads.

You should care about punctuation and grammar because you need to make it easy for us to read. If it's too hard to read, we don't read it and you have just wasted your time writing comments. By the way, everything you said was true but you're just giving ammo to the  xbox loyalists who bury their head in the sand about the lame XB1.
