First original Xbox shows launching in 2014, Microsoft hires AMC exec

Xbox Entertainment Studios president says company is hoping to "put something up" early next year; company reportedly hires Breaking Bad network development director.

The first original Xbox entertainment video programs are expected to launch in early 2014, Xbox Entertainment Studios president Nancy Tellem said recently during a Variety media event.

"We're hoping we will be able to put something up in the first quarter, at minimum second quarter," Tellem said. She did not specify which programs will launch during that window.

These programs will launch on Xbox consoles including the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. This is no small market, as Microsoft has sold more than 80 million Xbox 360s and 2 million Xbox One consoles so far.

Tellem, a former CBS TV executive, joined Microsoft in 2012 to head up Xbox Entertainment Studios.

The only Xbox One TV programming announced thus far is the Halo show produced by Saving Private Ryan director Steven Spielberg and the upcoming Quantum Break show that will tie in to the game. Microsoft is also reportedly working on a World Cup-themed show called Every Street United.

"I'm incredibly ambitious and impatient,” Tellem added, explaining that development on original programming has been "slower" than what she had hoped for. Despite that, “reflecting on what we've done and what lies ahead, it’s been pretty good,” she said.

Tellem also said that it has been a challenge to get Hollywood executives on board for new projects because it's not immediately clear where Xbox fits in the constantly evolving digital delivery video marketplace.

“We aren't Netflix, we aren't Amazon, we’re a different animal,” Tellem said. “We’re neither or we’re a little like them. It all depends. The lack of black and white and this is the template and this is what we’re following is very difficult. As we continue to do deals everyone’s going to get more comfortable.”

Separately, Variety also reports that Microsoft has hired Ari Mark, director of development for original unscripted programming at Breaking Bad network AMC. Mark will reportedly help Xbox Entertainment Studios develop new and original programming, though his move to Microsoft has yet to be officially confirmed.

I'll admit how wrong I am if they manage to make anything worth watching, but I'm thinking Microsoft getting involved in TV shows is a bad idea.

To much console hate these days, I am a Steam guy but, I know you only buy Xbox if you like the multimedia thing.

You buy PlayStation if you like a streamlined simple game machine with lots of Japanese games.

You buy or make a Steam Machine if you like 1080p at 60fps for under $500, and lots of Indie games

It's your choice, we as gamers have more choices then ever.

It sounds as if Microsoft are just as confused as to what the xbox one is supposed to be, as everybody else is. they're loosing the home PC market to tablets, they've lost the tablet market to the iPad and Android so they've decided they want to lead the living room market, unfortunately they haven't got a clue what that is exactly and they're just trying to double dip on everybody else's hard work by stuffing everything under xbox live gold and then chucking in a few semi interactive programs and another Siri on top of it all to try and justify it.

The first series is going to be about a serial rapist. It showcases Xbox One developers sodomizing their customers. Just like in real life.

Lol hate from fanboys? You idiot, Sony are the ones with the most pull in the tv and film department, they own Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures... you really think they can't make a show? Like the comment above said, they worked with AMC to make Breaking Bad

This isn't going to make me feel better about getting a X1. How about working on the gaming platform for the people who shelled out 500+ on that abomination of a console. I see no incentives to own the Xbox One over my PS4. Until I see a direction that is better than Ps+ my 360 will stay silver. I feel sorry for people defending Microsoft. Your getting raped in value, but haters gonna hate. #teamplaystation

Wonder when Gamespot is going to rename to XBOXspot?  Tell us, Tellem.  Seeing how CBS owns Gamespot and you used to be the president of CBS.  (For those who didn't read the article, Nancy Tellem works for Microsoft.)

I tried the Xbox one over the weekend, the voice commands don't respond all the time, the interface can be slow. I am not impressed with this console so far at all.

sony have been making movies and tv programs for decades. breaking bad, Seinfeld, and spider man are examples of these.

Funny they mention the 360 considering Msoft has all but abandoned that console as they did with the Original Xbox when the 360 came out. If you want a gaming console, get a PS4.

Interesting, I don't own the Xbox and I was hoping to get an Xbox.

I am a bit annoyed that the Xbox series has to deal with their CD-Rom drives and there's little or no backwards complicaity and he's right, they are a different animal, even I can't think of ways to tame that beast!

... and I really hope they make reprints of games like New Legends and American Army. New Legends uses the Unreal Engine 1 in it's extremely late stages, there's not even a wiki article on it and American Army title is a spin off from the MMO and is the first single player experience only to be found on the Xbox and was canceled for the PS2 at time and I strongly recommend this game for anyone. I see games as an art, which is why I say it.

This is why I like the idea of the Xbox being bought back. Why can't they? Mega Drive did it with their flashback console and people in the darkest corners in the UK still make Atari and C64 games.

I also forgot, I'm a major Thief 3 fan and I've had extremely problems running it on PC, because it crashes from time to time even on modern PCs and Windows software, so I'm looking forward to get that again... reprinted too for everyone considering that the Thief reboot is in the making.

Original Xbox programming is possibly the best idea Microsoft has had since the Zune.

@SurlyPotato why so we can have another origin story? i would rather have spidey as the main character rather then him playing second fiddle to tony stark.
