Berlin-based Silver Style Entertainment has recently released the first information on The Fall: Last Days of Gaia, a postapocalyptic role-playing game for the PC. The game is set in the year 2083, some 20 years after NASA announced its plans to colonize Mars after rapidly pumping CO2 into the atmosphere to make the planet inhabitable. Unfortunately, NASA's terraforming equipment was stolen by members of an extremist cult, who then, perhaps unwittingly, activated them on Earth.

So much CO2 has penetrated Earth's atmosphere by 2083 that the global temperature has risen more than 10 degrees centigrade, and the planet is expected to take centuries to recover. Hurricanes have swept away the cities, melting icecaps have flooded entire continents, and new strains of disease have killed much of the population. What survivors there are have come together to form gangs, and they spend much of their time battling with each other for control of the few remaining sources of clean drinking water.

Players will assume the role of a young man who, as a child during the catastrophe of 2062, witnessed the deaths of his mother and sister. Ever since that day his thoughts have been of nothing but revenge against the gang that attacked his village, and so when he hears that a newly formed government is looking to establish an army of mercenaries to restore order to the world, he signs up.

Assuming control of a party of up to six mercenaries, players will explore the land, hunting down gangs and interacting with numerous non-player characters that each have their own daily routines. Players will gain access to more than 300 different weapons as they progress through the game, and both real-time and turn-based combat options are available. Vehicles such as pickup trucks and buggies will also become available to players at certain points. Interaction with the environment will be crucial to players' success in The Fall, and as the realistic day-and-night cycle marks the passage of time, players will be required to dig for water and hunt and gut animals for food.

In the absence of a publisher, The Fall: Last Days of Gaia is currently scheduled for release sometime later this year. The game is very much still in development, and Silver Style recently appointed former Black Isle game designer Damien Foletto, whose previous credits include Baldur's Gate II and Fallout 3, to its team. We'll bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.
