Finally being able to get my hands on a 64DD title after all these years of waiting was really exhilarating. The first game I made my way to was the one that a group of people seemed to be having a blast with, Talent Studio. On TV screens spread across the wall were faces of people being manipulated and twisted into goofy forms. So I hopped in line to check it out.

As Nintendo has touted over the past few years, the 64DD you can capture screens using the Game Boy camera and then manipulate them. So the first thing I did was capture my face. From there (under the guidance of one of the Nintendo crew), I went to an image editor area of the game, where I cleaned up the snapshot. Basically, what you have to do in this area is apply make-up to your image to make your features transparent. You must also assign where on your face screen capture are your nose, eyes, and mouth. Pointing that out to the computer will allow it to move your face realistically - for example, your eyes will blink every so often.

After the image editing, I saw my face mapped on a polygonal character on the screen. And this is where the fun began. The game offers multitudes of different clothes to dress the characters in, different hair styles to sport, and even different body builds. You could spend hours just playing around with all the different options. And that's basically where the game's attraction is - it's so simple, yet it's loads of fun because no game has ever come out like this (at least not in such an easy-to-use presentation).

Once I was assigned clothes and hair, it was time to select some sort of an activity for my character. The Nintendo crew member thought it would be humorous to have me disco dance. He was right. There I was, up on the screen, dancing my ass off. It's a shame the 64DD isn't coming to the US, as Talent Studio could be quite the killer of time.
