First Heavenly Sword movie trailer

CG-animated direct-to-video movie starring Anna Torv, Alfred Molina, and Thomas Jane gets first trailer.

by

[UPDATE] Producer Brad Foxhoven said on the PlayStation Blog that the Heavenly Sword movie will be released in spring 2014. The movie will be available then digitally worldwide, and also at theaters in "select global markets."

The original story is below.

The upcoming CG-animated Heavenly Sword movie has received its first trailer. Spotted by Eurogamer, the brief trailer sets up the narrative for the movie, which will skip a theatrical release in favor of going direct to video.

The Heavenly Sword movie is based on Ninja Theory's 2007 PlayStation 3 game and is in production at Blockade Entertainment in association with PlayStation Worldwide Studios and Ratchet & Clank movie studio Rainmaker Entertainment.

The film features the voice work of Anna Torv, who voiced main character Nariko in the original game and would appear later on Fringe. The Heavenly Sword movie also stars Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2, The Man Who Knew Too Little) as King Bohan and Thomas Jane (The Punisher, The Mist) as Loki.

In the 2007 PS3 game, Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis played King Bohan. For more on Heavenly Sword, check out GameSpot's review.

Hehe, looks worse than the game but I didn't expect anything else.

Meanwhile, Ryo Hazuki is still stuck in a cave somewhere in China, waiting for a CGI movie.

I wonder if this means that we will be seeing a sequel soon. I just can't see the reasoning behind a CG movie after all these years if that isn't the case.

If IP owners insist on adapting games into movies animated is the only way to go, every live action video game movie I can remember was horrendous.

Maybe in the future live action movies will be able to effectively do justice to their video game inspirations, but that is a HUGE maybe and I don't see it anywhere in the near future.

@0:47  Is that King Bohan? He looks different.

King Bohan is one of my most favourite villain ever. Alfred Molina is a great actor, but I think Andy Serkis would be perfect.

Judging from his looks, I assume their going to change King Bohan personality. Then I have no interest.

Are you sure that's just a trailer?  I mean, Heavenly Sword was a pretty short game...

I was hoping for a Folklore Movie or at least an Anime series, but oh well

The graphics are really bad for a CGI movie. I hope it improves.

Direct-to-video is a better move than theater release. Game-to-movie adaptations are rarely Heavenly and they often get cut down (with a Sword) by critics and audiences alike. People who are interested in the game might seek it out and it'll get its fair share of purchases that way.

But its the same story, i prefer to replay the game.

I really liked the game and would love a sequel.

Not all that fond of videogames turned into movies on the other hand.

If they're trying to build up hype for a sequel then a movie is probably not the best way.

hehe, looks like a in-game footage. which is not a bad thing at all, heavenly sword was a very good looking game back in the day. looking forward to this!

I glad that sony acknowledges that the game still exists but why can't they just make a 2nd one? Maybe they're testing the waters with the movie to see if people are still interested in the series and then maybe they'll make a sequel. Also really? They couldn't get Andy Serkis back as King Bohan? Thats dumb.

Heavenly Sword was, at it's best, an interesting game, beyond that I don't know. I finished playing it only because the pickings were pretty slim back then. But, I'll probably pick this up. Just because I do stupid stuff like that.

I think this is just to test the waters for the R&C movie.

Who would ever watch this. Ever. Terrible looking movie for a generic game.

Looks dated for a CG movie. It looks like in game renders using 8 year old technology.

Scorpion1813
Scorpion1813

Looks like they are just using the character models from the game, which are a little out-dated as far as games are concerned, and definitely not on par with movie quality.

they make a movie, out of a not so popular franchise?! well good luck there, you are gonna need it and lots of it :/

If you're going to make a movie about a game, this is how you do it: make it CG and ahve the original voice cast (or a close enough equivalent).

What about Kai? She was the star of the game in my opinion. Must get her original voice actor for this! And must have a prominant role in the film.

Heavenly Sword was great, glad to see the franchise hasn't been forgotten.

A movie?  Great!  Something that's longer than the game itself!  :V

HA, pass. If that was a trailer for a sequel game then cool. A movie? No.

I wish Sony would just give us Heavenly Sword 2. I think the original (while not perfect) was a  fairly underrated game.

I counted 11 cliches from the narrator alone in that trailer.  It looks like it is skipping theaters for a good reason: it isn't a good film.  It looks to me like someone wanted to animate a bunch of chicks in sport bras or less fighting with big swords.

Heavenly sword movie !?!? how about a Heavenly sword 2 first ! this time make it free roaming add some zelda style items and puzzles and a bit of tomb raider style platforming and I'll be a happy chappy

Goddamit Sony, first Nariko turns up in Playstation All-stars, now an animated film, just give us HS2 already!!!

@Scorpion1813 I think the ingame models looked better actually, even if the number of polygons is significantly lower compared to the models showcased in that trailer.

Hurvl

@Scorpion1813 And don't have any grand dreams of box office success, because that might cost you more than you make back.

@amdreallyfast Almost naked girls fighting with big weapons? Well, he's hardly the first person to think of that and that implies that there is a demand for such things. This movie probably won't be any enjoyable unless you can put aside some things, like the amount of cliches, and/or is a fan of the game.

i hear that but too bad they cancelled production heavenly sword two

@komuchen I agree about the graphics. I think I picked up Heavenly Sword about a year or two ago and the facial animations still blew me away. Top notch productions values in every department. As far as length is concerned, yeah it is a short game, but I enjoyed it regardless. As cheap as I am, as long as a game is fun to play, I can live with a short length and not feel like I was ripped off or anything.

amdreallyfast

@komuchen @amdreallyfast Hardly.  The argument, based on my personal experience, was "if good film, it will be in theaters".  Therefore the inverse is, "if not in theaters, then it must not be a good film".  Beware the converse :)

Hurvl
Hurvl

@amdreallyfast @Hurvl Many have made that claim and been proven wrong (unfortunately), but either way I don't think they would have gained anything by taking it to cinemas. That would probably have them cost more than they would get in return.
