First Final Fantasy XIII-2 DLC dated, detailed

Coliseum battle Lightning and Master Sergeant Amodar available on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on February 7 for $3; future DLC will be "episodes" based on main characters.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 only just hit store shelves today, but Square Enix is already planning the game's first downloadable content, due out next week.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 isn't taking long to grow.

On February 7, gamers can download the coliseum battle Lightning and Master Sergeant Amodar on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network for 240 MS points, or $3.

In the content, players will fight against foes from previous Final Fantasy games. Additionally, when these adversaries fall, players can recruit them to their party.

Looking ahead, Square Enix said that "extensive" DLC is planned for Final Fantasy XIII-2. This will take the form of "episodes," which Square Enix said will complement the narrative of the game by providing "storyline branches" for main characters from the title.

@Lhomity Very good points! PC games are notorious for EXPANSIONS and thats what DLC is essentially about. Instead of paying for a full price expansion, these DLC's allow you to pick and chose what you want; new weeapon, new costumes, an extra-hard dungeon, etc. I think this is the wave of the future. Disgruntled gamers call it nickel and diming our pockets, but this has been around YEARS before there was the term "DLC". However what I want point out is releasing content after the release of the game. Is it just me, but I raised an eyebrow when this was announced. I would understand if they released DLC's like a month or two after the game, but releasing it so soon makes me wonder why not just package it along with the game in the first place. I buy expansions for my PC games and I would be peeved if I bought Diablo III and a week later the first expansion came out. This is probably why there are a lot of complaints regarding SE's decision. Lastly, this does not detract to how FANTASTIC this game is. If your on the fence because FFXIII left a bad taste in your mouth, TAKE A GAMBLE! I honestly believe that RPG enthusiasts will like this game. It still has it quirks, but its a SOLID RPG with plenty of things to do during the main story and after the completion!

@Falcon084 Wireless routers are very cheap nowadays, and many today are modem/router hybrids, and IPv6 ready. All your consoles, computers, phones and other devices will benefit from it. Well worth saving up for. @willkirkland 25+ hours for the main story, a plethora of side-quests and alternate endings isn't a long game worth $60? If they didn't have DLC (which btw is entirely optional) and the game was , no one would complain. But SE are like "" and people start whining. If you bought Final Fantasy XIII-2, you got a very long, high-quality game for $60 that was well worth the price. Be grateful. But hey, if you want more content to go with it, Square-Enix are offering. Nice, aren't they? PC games have had expansions and map packs and all sorts of stuff like this for decades. Now consoles have it too. Get used to it.

@smoothyplum26 The difference between evil and good is perception. Don't make quote that Star Wars line. *trying very hard to avoid spoilers* Sure, what Caius plans/does is evil in the eyes of those who trying to stop him, but his cause is righteous, or at least he believes it is. He believes what he's doing is the right thing to do. He's not a typical villian, and his motives are not purely "evil" if you understand why he's doing it. Whether you sympathize with him or not is up to you.

smoothyplum26
smoothyplum26

Oh wait, I saw that Kevin did the review. That explains a lot. God could create the perfect game and Kevin would talk 90% negative and 10% OK/Good.

smoothyplum26
smoothyplum26

How can you say Caius is not evil? That killed the review for me. He's as evil as any villain since he would kill all of man kind to save one person. Has me question whether the reviewer played the game or payed much attention.

for $60 i'd expect to have a good long game content but instead they charged $60 for 8GB worth of story and are milking us for the rest of the content via these "episodes" as DLC. Straight BS!

My copy arrives today, but all this talk about "character episode" DLC story packs is now making me question why FF13-2 is half as long as FF13.

I happen to be enjoying FF XIII-2 so far. Much better than XIII's snoozefest. I'm also looking forward to the DLC. Should keep the game interesting for a while. Some of the comments here are btw. Not trolling. Just speaking the truth. Its really, really funny because you just don't get it.

So I'm only like 8 hours into XIII-2 but I gather that the main plot is to find Lightning. How exactly are they going to make her a party member if the whole goal of the game is to find her?

SE, you are having all this money problems for biting microsoft's poison apple. if you think you can get out of this rut by skrewing the remaining fans who have stuck with you, you are seriously mistaken.

As a guy who has played every Final Fantasy games save a few, I want to say to Square Enix, go f*** yourselves. Put Versus on the market, and not a Final Fantasy's take on a Pokemon game. Monsters on team? Raising them? Cloud...if you are here...come save us from this bulls***... -____-* FF13 was a good game, loved it. 13-2 new monster addition system ruined the battle system, which I thought was really good in the original. All of the above is my opinion.

I WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT SUPPORT ANYTHING FF 13... I still feel like a sucker for buying FF13... and even more of sucker that I FORCED MYSELF to finish the game. IT IS CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT!

It's SE's game, so they can pretty much do whatever they want with it. People in support of the DLC are right, it is the way of the... now, actually. People who accept or even like DLC will buy them, and if there is money to be made, it will be done. I am impressed that FF held off this long. I am an old timer who remembers when game release dates actually meant something, a time before EA and the Sims. (If you look at the pricing of the stuff packs for the Sims series, almost all other DLC look very reasonable.) I just hope SE will have the decency of collecting all its "extensive" DLC on disk later. My PS3 HD space is limited, and external storage isn't free. Most of all, I hope my old favorites, which are numerous, will all end soon to make way for new IP that I don't care about. The price isn't even the biggest issue for me; it's keeping track of all those DLC across a dozen series that release new games every couple of years. I want to get the full experience of games I buy but I can't keep tabs on them as though they are my one true love. Come to think of it, if every game that has DLC promise to release a compilation at the end, they do not bother me that much.

@dav2693 Evidently the next evolution is episodic DLC. Definitely a great time to be a gamer.... with lots of disposable income.... and little to no concept of monetary value...

People have to realize that gaming is becoming more digital, and that means dlc. It's just up to the company on whether it's set at a fair price, and $3 isn't terrible imo, compared to those $15 dlc out there...

Square, I know you're having money problems but this IS NOT the way to go about retaining your fans. I think I speak for FF fans everywhere when I say that quality > quantity. You are on the fast track to failure. Put resources into full games, then market them. That's what you've always done best.

that's just sad. guess people will just have to wait for the complete edition to come out. bright side even if it doesn't come to na it will still be easily playable and the asian version will have english subs or whatever of course.

@dark_rising76 That's definitely an upside of the PSN store, minimum £5 for your wallet and no stupid point system. Anyway, the game has been out in Japan since December 15 and development of DLC requires a fraction of the development time and assets. All in all, more game is better than no game.

TrueProphecy22
TrueProphecy22

Well, I'm waiting for XIII-2's price to drop before buying it. I would be so frustrated running into "To be continued," and then having all this DLC shoved down my throat after having paid full price for the game.

Just as I thought, recall Final Fantasy 4 the After Years? WiiWare game that had several episodes for it as DLC? That focused on specific characters? I speculated this was going to happen for FF13-2, I have the game myself BTW, and it looks like I was right on the money with my speculation. Let's see what happens,of course, since this is a console game, I don't expect it to follow FF4 and have the Complete Collection released on a handheld.

dark_rising76

A DLC a week after the game comes out??? I know it's only $3 but in reality it's at least $10 because that's the minimum that you have to purchase for MS points. This should have been in the game as a bonus and this is mostly the reason why I don't like DLCs .SE must figured that this will cover the cost of all the other crappy games they've come out with within the last two years. They really need to concenctrate on two things: Just Cause 3 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII, plain and simple.

Instead of milking money with DLCs SE would be better hiring more people and finally deliver FF vs XIII. What kind of big company isn't able to make a larger team keeping the quality of the products?

@ShadowOfKratos Of course developers/publishers are desperate for money, especially in a day and age where people should already understand how this gen works. How many times does it have to be said that the massive cost of development versus a 10 raise in video game pricing doesn't always equal out.....never mind in this case all the fair weather FF fans who are complaining that they aren't getting the game THEY expect when deep down they damn well know it doesn't work that way. We get it. We've been getting it for a long while now (it's all about you and not gaming), but here's the thing. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that. The sad part is we also know even those who never planned on buying it are still going to run their mouths.....because it's all about you.

I passed on getting XIII-2 today because I didn't care for XIII too much. I'll pick XIII-2 up on a later date but I don't like how SE is adding DLC to FF. Sad how FF has fallen since last gen.

@syngenesis I think you took my post out of context. I didn't compare them. They are very different from each other. But one thing that is similar is that they both seem like foreign objects as far as the main Final Fantasy series goes. When I played them, they just felt like they strayed too far away from what I liked about FF.

syngenesis
syngenesis

@cold existence: You can not honestly compare Xii to XIII, twelve literaly let you explore its EXTREMELY large world from the get go, you had towns and villages and could run from one end of the worl to another(if you where powefull enough),you could even get lost if you were just starting out,yes it lacked a compelling story but atleast its not the straight lineXIII was. as for XIII-2, what did you guys expect??? Type-0 is a far larger game than both XIII & XIII-2 combined, atleast they got that one right, am just waiting on versus, hopefully it will even be better than type-0

=[ looks like SE is going to go down the route of cut from the completed game and paste back in as DLC later. Very lame. DLC should be released at least a few months after release, that would make the game companies not rely on DLC income for the game and so strive to make a better game and sell more units.

williebazerka
williebazerka

@PDTECRJ- He's talking about how older FF games were essentially open world type games and now FF games are linear go from point A to point B (in a straight line) followed by a cutscene then from point A to point b ( again in a straight line) repeat.
