Firefall goes open beta this July

Closed beta updates planned for May and July to wrap up game's major milestones.

by

In a few months, the currently-in-closed-beta sci-fi shooter Firefall will finally be playable for the public.

Now the public can go jetpack-floating in a future Copacabana this July.

Red 5 Studios announced via a press release that the open beta for the game will start on July 9 this year. Furthermore, the studio is planning on launching two more updates to the closed beta on May and July that focuses on wrapping up the game's major milestones.

The updates include city power levels where players receive rewards by increasing a city's power level through missions, melding exploration where increasing city power levels let players explore new areas previously covered by melding energy storms, Chosen instances, and updated crafting and battleframe progression.

Players who want to access the closed beta immediately can still do so via the game's Founders Pack program. More information can be found here.

The game currently is awful trust me ~ it needs major major reworking done in every area possible.  The weapons are weak and uninspired, chasing down PvE objectives is tiresome and boring, even frustrating when you arrive just as the event wraps up.

Many of the missions are poorly constructed, you honestly don't know if you can finish the mission because there is very little to distinguish between a group mission and a solo mission, I've seen and participated in many supposedly solo missions which really needed a group.  Just now, the daily I was 'trying' to do required a group has the area was swarming with chosen, at least 20+

Basically, Red5 needs to beef up the weapons considerably, lower the damage of the chosen.  Increase the run speed/jumpjets so the player can move around the environment faster.  Increase the amount of events tenfold, so the player isn't left running from one event to another through vast empty, confusing environments.  The missions themselves need reworking, with far better scaling on the missions because nothing more frustrating then spending 10 minutes running to an event, and then dying because the area is covered with chosen and nobody else is around.  The SiN network needs an overhaul, as right now its incredibly buggy, many errors and connection problems, right now ~ its plainly obviously this is a PvP shooter, with PvE elements tacked on.

I went into the game with an open mind. I left unimpressed.

I've been playing the beta off and on. personally for me I liked it. I haven't played it recently so I don't know what new changes they have made since they added the Founders thing. (Which I didn't care for) But I'm looking forward to the full release.

Is this going to be the sort of open beta where there won't be any more character wipes?

It's F2P, and it has a lot of potential.  The PvP is fun and the world is large and detailed, but it just needs more content.  Anyone that has played Unreal Tournament will feel right at home with the competitive "esports" focused side of the game.

It's getting harder and harder to be excited about MMOs these days. Firefall looks ok but is it really good enough to pay full price PLUS subscription fees? I'll bet it will have micro-transactions too just so they can complete the trinity of bad business decisions.

that trailer is honestly the cheesiest most cliche garbage this world has to offer...... but overall the game looks pretty cool.

It sounds too much like Firefly. Please someone make a game based on it.

This will be the final nail in Defiance's coffin...

@redness19 gj posting a comment without actually knowing anything about this game

@redness19 I agree, and while I think this looks cool, I've got a standing order to wait at least 3-4 weeks on any MMO launch for researching it.  It's not worth having your meaningless Founder sticker when you've lost $60 for what later becomes an industry joke.

Sadly wont happen fox owns the name firefly which is why the movie was called serenity and for some odd reason fox is happy holding onto the franchise and letting it rot...

@ESB I'm seeing the most mediocre reviews for Defiance which sucks because the first episode was pretty good!

@ESB No, if there's enough people like me we'll keep playing, so far i know squat about Firefall, I keep seeing these news bits and I know nothing of what the game is so they have some serious show and tell to do.....just saying.

further if it's a subscription based MMO it's going to be dead in the water, subscriptions are outdated and it's one factor that got me to try Defiance.

@SirNormanislost Better than that, literally the ONLY thing they have done with licence in years is release a hat like Jane wears from his mum, and then they went after people who had patterns to MAKE that hat with cease & desists.

@MJ12-Conspiracy @ESB if theres one thing i do recommend, its looking into the game. I play defiance as well, and enjoy both... but even in firefalls beta state... its further along than Defiance is... and they're gonna have a run for their money when it goes open beta this summer ;)

@MJ12-Conspiracy @ESB its f2p, and its similar gameplay to defiance, but has way more feeling to it. rather than finding weapons, you thump or, GoW horde mode'esque, a mining machine that drills resources out the ground, you use these different quality resources to hone/craft your weapons.
