Numerical Design Limited (NDL) has announced that Firaxis Games, the game developer led by Sid Meier, has licensed the NetImmerse 3D game engine and toolkit for use in upcoming games, according to a report on game news site HomeLan Fed. Firaxis is best known for creating Civilization III, SimGolf, Sid Meier's Gettysburg!, and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Firaxis selected NetImmerse after researching a number of other options.

"NetImmerse has been tested in multiple released products, has excellent documentation and support, has a simple interface and gentle learning curve, is portable to multiple platforms, and is written in elegant code that's easy to customize," said Mike Gibson, director of development for Firaxis. "NetImmerse provides a strong foundation that allows us to write targeted code for some incredible games we have in the works."

No information was revealed regarding the upcoming games that will use the new engine. NDL's NetImmerse engine has been used in a number of recent games including Freedom Force, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Star Trek Bridge Commander, and Dark Age of Camelot.
