Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn beta scheduled for late February

First phase to be limited to areas around in-game nation Gridania, as well as feature level 30 instanced dungeon with a boss battle.

Square Enix has announced that the beta for the PC version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will start on February 25.

Players can head into FF XIV's revised world this February, as long as they're invited.

The beta, dubbed as phase one, will feature a Full Active Time Events system. These quick events will take place in non-instanced areas and can happen to random to players as long as they are within proximity. Players aren’t required to party up to experience these encounters.

The phase one beta will be limited to areas around the Gridania nation. Players can also expect to check out an instanced dungeon, complete with a boss battle, that only allow players who are at level 30.

For more updates and information, check out the forum thread featuring the producer’s notes here. Players who wish to sign up as beta testers can do so on the game's official page.

I would play this game if they used a Buy to Play model like Guild Wars 2... was really disappointed to hear they are still planning to go subscription based.  I think they are going to ruin themselves with that plan.  Have they not seen the success of GW2, or other mmos that went free after failing with subscription?  There is never going to be another WoW, the days of those style of games are over.   I would like to play this, but honestly I am a medical student and its not even worth my money or effort to sub to a game I cant get my money's worth.

That video though :D So let me get this straight.. Bahamut, once sealed.. breaks loose! Destroys EVERYTHING.. then immediately gets sealed up again by a wizard that reminds me of the actor that did Imhotep in The Mummy: Arnold Vosloo. I'd say mission failed, you guys.

Final Fantasy is proof that Graphics play a very small part of what makes a good game. You can try to dazzle with perdy graphix but at the end of the day you must entertain us.

I've been with FFXIV since 1.0's alpha/beta stages til its release til its to ultimate destruction for rebirth. With the change of the development team under new leadership, the game was getting good that the public eye didn't see after its horrific launch. The game continuously was getting better every patch it came out with the announcement of FFXIV: ARR, I knew the Director/Producer Yoshi-P can pull this game off under many MMO influences for references but turn it with their FF feel to it. I've played FFXIV: ARR alpha and I'm liking how its turning it out and phase 1 beta is just around the corner for Legacy member as myself to see how much change has turned up since then. I see this game with much success. Props to Yoshi-P for turning this game around the way it should be.

I applied for the beta, and hopefully it's WAY better than the original FF14. I played the original FF14 beta and it was atrocious. Hope it's way better, and even if it is, I probably still won't get it because of the monthly subscription (if there still is one).

Been waiting a while to hop back on this. Doubt players will get to use their old characters for the beta, but I'm all for seeing what things SE has changed since the alpha.

I played FFXI for almost 7 years, and it's the greatest game I've ever played. FFXIV was of course hugely disappointing... but I'm glad they stuck with it, and I'm excited to give it another try. Unfortunately, I can't afford time now like I could in my XI days, but I'll give it what I've got.

Well I was in alpha and I can say, XIV and XIV:ARR are absolutely nothing alike. There's not even a shred left of XIV except the City names and a few other small tid bits. I will also say for those hoping for this to go F2P keep dreaming it's not going to happen. Especially with how busy XIV was and it couldn't even be considered a game until maybe the last couple of months. However those who liked FF 11 you should get excited, the game play I experienced in alpha was excellent!

Although I think the gameplay will bore me slightly, I'd definately like to see what theyve done to the world... Random quests popping up sounds good too.

So this is an HD 2d sequel to final fantasy 3 then or at least that is what it should be?

This should really be called FFXIV gamma or something, because this game has already gone through the longest beta ever...it was just referred to as the "release".

These companies don't seem to understand that the MMO market isn't fun and easy. Its hard work making a game, now you are expecting people to continuously play that game month after month and PAY for it!? Well, your game better be GOOD!

A second stint using the FFXIV name isn't going to give them any more clout than it did the first time. I think a lot of SE fans WILL give them a second chance, but those are only the devoted. The non-FF fans who just wanted a new MMO would probably swear off from the game unless a miracle occurs.

This game already has a heavy strike against them. Its basically an uphill battle to get people reinvested in a FAILED game. But if SE can pull this trick off, even ex-SE fans would have to smile.

I am very excited to play a Realm Reborn. It seems like around phase 3 all of us that had accounts of version 1.0 gets to play with their characters and gets to keep them for the final version of the game when it is released. The alpha testing of the game was very solid. I can't wait to see people playing the level 30 dungeon. P.S. The Fate system looks awesome!!!!

I was excited for 14 the first time, then it came out. Luckaly I didn't buy it. I'll be waiting for reviews of the reborn now too... Time will tell if they learned anything or if we can say goodbye to this developer for good.

well... I hope they just re-made the entire game, because the first attempt at an MMO completely stunk.

I think it proves that only providing good graphics is not enough. It does not prove that graphics only play a small part :D in fact, graphics can be considered quite important, depending on the genre. For this genre, I'd say they are very important. Nothing is more important than solid gameplay though, this I can agree with.

@wizo59mt I have to agree, I'm not anti-PC by any means, but if this goes well I might check out the console version. I have to limit my PC usage to school/work and light internet browsing or I won't get anything done (I've recently learned lol) and managing my time on a separate console is just easier for me at this point.

@LigerZero248 I'm looking forward to seeing the changes myself. I just hope there is more to do for max jobs. Time will tell. Nothing else for me to level, just the new jobs being added.

@Solid_Azeus

Yessir pretty bad, something a bit downbeat and orchestral or simple piano would've been better.  Neat trailer though, I like how close those little peons were to winning.  Shows them all praying and what not, then......no.

@LuckyNumberS Once its released give it a month or two if it takes a dump like the original did for it to go F2P

mercenary_cloud

@decoy1978 people are still gonna play it no matter what cause there are the true fans who will stick to the game no matter how bad the gameplay or the graphics are. im one of those people and you know for a fact that its not gonna go under just cause a few people didn't like the way it is.

SpikeSpeagal
SpikeSpeagal

@---Cipher--- Shame man you should have gotten it. I picked it up for 8 bucks brand new at a pawn shop and gameplay was free for a year I think. Then again I had that feeling that Square, even with their issues, wouldn't let one of their flagship names sink, somethings you just refuse to let be tarnished. Guess I was right on that one, now I'm starting ARR with all lvl 50 classes, legacy, and automatic entry into beta even though I was also in alpha. Can't wait to start some more awesome dungeons!

Sfr528
Sfr528

@---Cipher--- I honestly think when it comes to an MMO you really ought to get gameplay experience first.  I heard FFXIV will have an open world beta and everyone's curiosity about how it feels and plays should be satisfied.

Katra

@RAD_RADIO Their first attempt at an MMO was FFXI and that game is one of the few successful ongoing MMO's like WoW.  All Square had to do the first time around is make a similar game with updated graphics and less downtime.  Made it more modern that's all.

Sfr528
Sfr528

@RAD_RADIO The thing is this wasn't their first attempt at an MMO.  Its amazing that this game was released in such a state.  It's almost as if the development team were all brand new to creating games and had no experienced developers giving insight on what makes a game fun.

@NeverMore0 It's people like you who are ruining humanity, it's always about what you want isn't it loser? Here's an idea, get off the "I'm important" train and get back to reality, lot's of people loved FFXIV and plenty more will love ARR.

@Tripwolf @SpikeSpeagal Lol no joke, I played Xiv to shutdown and it only truly started showing as a game right at the end. Glad I did tho, a lot of gear from Xiv is now a non trade unique item. Stats are crappy compared to newer stuff but the looks are quite unique as accessory items. But yeah i can honestly say in alpha we were restricted to one city area but the whole game was there. It's honestly a brand new game. XIV was shit, wasn't a big fan of ff13 and ff13-2 is a bloody joke that I've never touched or will ever touch.

LigerZero248
LigerZero248

@decoy1978 @LuckyNumberS the game is most likely not to go free to play. If your expecting free to play model like SWTOR or Tera, its not gonna end up that way. Going Free to play means that game wasn't that successful to keep subscribers happy but we will see.

decoy1978
decoy1978

@mercenary_cloud @decoy1978 I use to be like that. In my youth I bought just about any Squaresoft product released in the US: I got FF Mystic Quest, Chocobo Racing, fuah I even got I think it was called Bushido Blade for PSX (Im still shaking my head on that one).

You can't spell the word fanatic without "fan". But lately I've been quite disappointed with Square Enix in general. The game direction to certain storied franchises is atrocious. Their overzealousness into the MMO market borders on OCD, and though the remakes of past successes into modern times were a silver lining, I just can't help feel that they are only doing remakes to supplement their income from losses of other games.

BTW it wasn't a "few" people... it was a general consensus by people playing the game AND top brass that the game was trash.

SirNormanislost
SirNormanislost

@mercenary_cloud @decoy1978

I think you underestimating how many people had problems with FF14 if it was actually a "few" they wouldn't have to have taken the game offline and rebuilt parts of the game

They've put the work in this time around so it won't go under but will it be good enough to avoid going F2P? Not many MMOs manage this but FF11 was very popular I'm sure they can work it out

SpikeSpeagal
SpikeSpeagal

@Sfr528 Nah wasn't the companies first, however the team that originally did XIV had never done an MMO before. Now they've pulled a large amount of the team from FF 11 to work on ARR. It's come together quite nicely.

slainta

@SpikeSpeagal @Tripwolf So, let me understand.. You didn't even touch FF XIII nor FF XIII-2 but still you define them a bloody joke? Im honestly a bit tired of this trend of thumbing down the latest FF games while the most played games of this generation are the stupid CoD.
