Final Fantasy XIII sells 1 million in North America

Square Enix's acclaimed JRPG goes platinum in US and Canada within five days of PS3, Xbox 360 release, becoming fastest-selling installment in franchise history.

by

A day after Final Fantasy XIII's March 9 release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America and Europe, Square Enix was trumpeting the game's Western sales potential. According to the publisher, the highly anticipated role-playing game had shipped 5 million units worldwide. That figure, of course, includes the more than 1 million units in day-one sales the game enjoyed in Japan, where it is a PS3-exclusive.

FFXIII is selling like Lightning.

Today, Square Enix touted more strong sales figures for FFXIII, saying the game has sold through more than 1 million units in North America during its first five days on the market. Though initially announced as exclusive to the PS3, Square Enix said as part of Microsoft's 2008 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference that the game would also arrive for the Xbox 360 in the West. The publisher did not break down how many units the game sold on either platform.

According to the publisher, FFXIII's opening-week performance has secured it the claim of "largest first-week sales in franchise history." To date, the Final Fantasy franchise has combined to sell more than 96 million units worldwide in its more than 20-year history, the publisher said. In December, Square Enix said that it expects FFXIII to add some 6 million units to that cumulative tally.

Square Enix did not provide word on the game's European opening-week performance and had not responded to requests for additional information as of press time. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I enjoyed the simplified to control and leveling scheme. I could do without the game being completely linear. But it does keep the game focused on an amazing Japanese emotional style story. Bottom line is that it is a solid addition to the Final Fantasy series, I think making two versions limited the developers. I think it will be an exellent jumping of point to make a good MMO FF 24 anyone?

a bit corny and linear, but a good game. 8/10

Although there's lots of changes in game-play but it's still very gud.In my opinion it is better comparing to ME2 or the other new RPG.Plus, the graphic is so gud,so there's no complaint about this

@renofury Comparing Mass Effect and Final Fantasy is like comparing Halo with God of War. They are totally different kinds of RPG's, just like Halo and God of War are different "action-games". -.-'

@ TrueIori yes ME2 is better then ff13 its totally on another class but I am playing FF13 at the moment and got to say that the story is excellent so far at chapter 8.

@ orestes1981 LoL i know you not calling me an ME fanboy , if u care to read my thoughts on part 2 i am far from an ME fanboy but IMO it is still better than FF13.

@TrueIori That is the funny thing about opinions, everyone has them. If I like one game more than another, a ME-fanboy cannot sway my judgement.

@ papavicio Did u forget to check the PC version of Mass Effect? Any way just because it sold more , that does not make it the better game -_-.

papavicio
papavicio

confirmed FFXIII sold more than mass effect 2 , 2.93 million FFXIII only on PS3 + 0.56 million 360 vs 1.56 million ME2

IF final fantasy xiii had xii's battling system then i would be much happier. or if it was like Xs battling system that would be better...the combo system is not to my taste especially because you can't switch your party members!...maybe that is why i don't like it.

@yixingtpot Eventually every console (as dvds and laptos) will have bluray... i think I rather wait and buy the next xbox generation than spending my dollars on a console that still cant win against the xbox ,except of course on having "1 blueray cd" for a really big game. Im enjoying my FF just fine in xbox and I hope you enjoy yours. (most of people that have PS3 and XBOX rather to play on xbox all the time, it has better internet gaming promotion and variety, better desing of menus and more options in them, so most gamers only use the ps3 to ps3 games, which may look and be great, but is not enough when compare). I did not want to critic the PS3 but you just had to me the usual arrogant PS3 owner

@Truelori Likewise, I did not mean to offend you if I did. And I completely agree, Final Fantasy doesn't mean half as much to me as it did long ago... But alas, everything is a victim of change... And my favorite Final Fantasy happens to be my favorite video game of all time: Final Fantasy VII.

Great game!!!!!! dont get why it got less than 12 in reviews, now that was a sub-par FF game

@Digital_DJ_00 Sorry i did not mean to come across as an a$$, it just sad to see a great series like Final Fantasy reduce to what it is today , A shell of it former self :(. If 6 your second Favorite what your First ? Is it 4 ? lol

@wolvklaw Rest easy knowing that plenty of well made FF game come out for the Wii like all the Crystal Chronicles that don't get seen on the other consoles. Jealousy is felt around the board I promise.

@ yixingtpot I like PS3 as much as any other Sony fan, but to say that a game like GTA4 ripped off PS3 owners b/c it didn't fill up the disc is absurd! Just b/c a Blu-ray disc can hold a lot of memory doesn't mean that it HAS to or should. As a musician I wouldn't keep making more and more songs just b/c it didn't fill up an entire CD. The ps3 has plenty of other merits that the 360 can't hold a candle to so it doesn't need such a petty argument such as disc space.

@MrHanky35 Well I apologize. I'm just saying, if you think GoW2 looked better than Killzone2 than you are apart of a very silent minority.

@Truelori I feel MUCH at ease knowing you have a special favor for FFVI, as it is my 2nd favorite in the series. By stating that I had played many Final Fantasies, all I was trying to get across is that I have been playing Final Fantasy since I was 10 years old and that I have enough experience to make a pecemistic judgement on FFXIII. I just flat out do not like FFXIII's qualities.

Digital_DJ_00

@MrHanky35 You don't like Princess Bride? I was just trying to make a funny. No harm intended.

I'm leveling up for the final push to the end in Chapter 13. The game opens up and you can warp around and i finally figured out how to get a chocobo. A few simple side missions and you get the chocobos to ride around on which makes it feel like a good old FF game. 62 hours into it, and i'm getting used to the style. The story is the weakest link for me, but it's good game overall. Hopefully the FFXIII Versus will be better.

@Digital_DJ_00 I haven't played "All" FF games like you but i played enough to know the series nothing more than a Shell of it former self. Sad that Six beats almost any FF made to date and Square to hard headed to get the series out of it damn "High School Musical" setting. P.S The fact that you played "All" FF games means nothing to me :)

yixingtpot

@Mercadeo what a typical goof, you can't get it into your limited mind that Blu-ray gaming is simply beyond dvd gaming. Go try to fit a Blu-ray movie onto a dvd, won't work neither will gaming. We are not talking about quality, we are talking about the end product overall. If you design a Blu-ray game that takes up 50GB that's 2 discs, or a dual layer Blu-ray... and that CANNOT be done via dvd because nobody, developer, or gamer is going to buy a 6 dvd game even if the developers were stupid enough to package and budget such a failure of a project. While a 2 disc PS3 Blu-ray game is to be expected in the HD gaming era of PS3, such a concept is unimaginable for the XBROKE dvd player. END OF STORY. either grow a new brain or buy a PS3.

are we really gunna have to quote princess bride.... pretty much any battle system is better than the turn based systems of the old games. i played all the main FF (cept 13, havent gotten it yet) + about 12 of the offshoots and load of other square enix/soft games and several others. im sooooo done with turn based.

I totally baked that cookie with iocane powder, you should be blacking out riiiiiight...now! I don't what to think of the new battle system Square has developed with XII & XIII

@MrHanky35 Actually, to be absolutely honest I've played I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII,VIII,IX,X,XII,Crisis Core, Dissidia, X-2, and Tactics. I'm well aware there's more than 13 titles in the initial series. And there isn't 50 Final Fantasies........

MrHanky35

@Digital_DJ_00 really? you've played all 50 something? lol there is alot more than just 13 (tactics, x-2, choco stables, cell phone games, ect)

@Truelori I own it. Both the original and the expansion. My opinion has more weight than yours considering I've played ALL of the Final Fantasies as well.

Wow...now there are fanboys comments either about what console is it better on or is it a good game...can't we just get along and accept the fact that it was released and is available for both consoles??!!!:)

ps3 blueray affects only the resolution and cinema vids on FF. Dont give me the "oh please FF in the PS3 is so much better than in the xbox 360 where it looks like a super nintendo game¨. In a lot of games as "assasins creed one and two" the xbox 360 have better graphics (even gamespot say it on "xbox Vs PS3", not me) and the new amazing console PS3 full of the greatest of the greatest, still have a hard time competing with "good old" xbox graphics.... thats a fact. If you dont believe go to "xbox VS PS3" and see it by yourself. So stop being so arrogant and lest all enjoy the game in both consoles!!

I'm tempted to get this game but I haven't played a Final Fantasy since X. I'm afraid that the series may have changed too much for me to enjoy it. Is anyone having this issues or am I being worried for no reason?
