Final Fantasy XIII-2 arriving 2011 in Japan

Direct sequel to 2010's FFXIII being simultaneously developed for 360 and PS3; Motomu Toriyama to direct.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will arrive on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this year in Japan, Square Enix announced at its production department event today. According to a translation of the event by the blog Andria Sang, the game will be a direct sequel to FFXIII and will be directed by series veteran Motomu Toriyama.

"I told you not to put bird seed on my sword!"

FFXIII-2 will once again star Lightning, the lead protagonist from XIII. A short trailer was shown at the event, which showed her dueling with a mysterious purple-haired man. No other details were revealed, though Toriyama mentioned that the game would take on board fan feedback from the previous installment.

Rumours around the announcement of FFXIII-2 appeared last week, when Internet sleuth Superannuation discovered that the FinalFantasy13-2Game.com domain was quietly registered on January 10. A sequel to XIII was widely expected, given its critical and financial success. Square Enix's latest financials showed it had sold more than 5.5 million units worldwide.

FF changed when it went over to the x box. its more like kingdom hearts now..

it would be interesting if they tried to make an RPG game that was co-op like you'd level up different weapons to your partner you'd probably specialize in different things i think it'd be pretty cool if you could play a co-op RPG, i guess the mechanics would be difficult to manufacture but if they did get down to getting it done i think it would be quite interesting

imo.. ff13 was better than ff X, and why does everyone keep saying character development is linear?? at least it's not mass effect. If everyone would wait till the game gets going it gets much more complex but i don't think anyone is giving it a chance (and i love Lightning way more than the cry baby Tidus)

I'm sorry but ff13 was just garbage... I would rather have them pour their resources into finishing verses since that was made by the kingdom hearts team. Hopefully that will be decent

Final Fantasy 13 was good, but not as good as 8 or 10. Why the hell did they make the character development so linear? FF10's sphere grid was awesome! It gave you enough room to decide for yourself what skills you want a certain character to learn next. I really hope they fix that in FF13-2.

I just hope all the unanswered questions are payed attention to in the making of the sequel... 13 was awesome and I loved it entirely. can't wait for the next one! (^_^)

I say if you don't want the game then don't get it. Me personally I loved the game, whether it was the best or not. It was challenging, plus I like the story and the characters that added to it, normally I wouldn't use all the characters in a Final Fantasy game. In this one I did, even though they kind of force you to, but I didn't have a problem playing with everyone. Seriously though, I can't wait for the second one, I'm going to get it and play it and beat it. For those who didn't like the first one, why bother to comment its pointless when half of you are going to get the game anyway...smh....Oh I can't wait for this to come out.

I hope this one has sidequests, but I doubt it since there's a 360 version.

FFXIII, IMO the story line is too linear, the gameplay is somewhat boring (all i have to do is running around and beat some monsters). once you're in the world map (yea i know, just consider it as a world map) everything is just boring, there is no place to break off the stress, it seems that all the world is the battlefield, or the battlefield is all the world. they replace the beautiful of city civilization scenery with save crystals but the new battle system is awesome, i like the way we have to set on the paradigm combinations, paradigm shifts, the character development system everything is awesome, although it took a while until all the systems available. There is no secret sidequest and all the sidequest (cieth stone) can be done after beating the final boss... whats the point then? to me all there is to be enjoyed is the nice graphics and battle system which could be boring after a playing quite a while.

Waste of time.... Yes FF13 tried something new but they took out the core of the game. As everyone else like to say " I mean" seriously though. There is a good story I'll give you that "I mean" now what happened to the core dynamics of the games? "I mean" for F*&^ sakes I want to explore! Walk in towns I visited before for secrets maybe a half monster emo dude laying in a coffin under a mansion, take peoples items and money out of their chests. SIDE QUESTS, EXPLORATION, AIRSHIPS, GOLDEN SAUCER, etc. Catch my drift?

theshonen8899 "MADE THE CONTENT WILL FULL INTENTION OF RELEASING A SEQUEL ONLY ONE YEAR LATER. BOTH OF THESE OPTIONS ARE HORRIFYING" That's got to be one of the dumbest comments I've read here. How is making or using extra content for a sequel a bad thing?

Pickleking23
Pickleking23

FFXIII tried something new which I give a lot of credit towards, games are losing originality nowadays and when someone tries something new, everyone pisses and moans. With that being said I agree FFXIII was not the best FF by any means but it was a good game, the story telling, the characters, new combat system and the outstanding soundtrack were all a plus in my books, I thought they did a great job and can't wait for the 2nd.

Ikouze

I honestly don't see how people say XIII sucks, when it really doesn't. I mean, Square tried something new for a change not involving turn based action. I mean, how could people like turn-based? It's the same boring formula that RPG's have been using for the past 15 years. Something new won't hurt. And personally, I think the paradigm system adds challenge to the game, forcing you to change up your strategy so that you can win the fight. Face it, turn based is old and games like Mass Effect and XIII are changing the turn based RPG business. Fanboys can't accept change.

You know, I could care less about FFXIII. I mean did everyone like it the plot and characters so much to warrant a sequel? On the plus side, having played FFXIII, I won't be lured in by the Final Fantasy name.

@Kou-Nurasaka FFX was Linier in a way, but in some aspects it wasnt. With 3 optional summons, the ultimate weapons (which definantly were NOT easy to get), Blitzball, all those things were fun, they werent a grind or some boring side game, I liked doing all of that. And there was added stuff like at one part if you talk to Wakka you get an optional cut scene that explains more about his brother, or you could collect all Jecht Spheres, FFXIII just didnt have that. And more than that, with X I lost sleep to play and with XIII I went to sleep. I get what you are saying, but there was alot more to do than in XIII.

I really did like FFXIII. And for that matter, I really like most FF games. However, I've got a bad feeling it's probably gonna be like FFX again. FFX was great, FFX-2 was horrible. Nonetheless, I want to give this game a chance. If it ever releases outside of Japan, that is.

It still seems like a LOT of people dont know yet, but this game pretty much takes place in a new "strange" world. Lightning heads out in search of a way to 2 of her friends (wont spoil) and she ends up in a strange place. If anyone is wondering about it, you should really go read the short novel that takes place after the end of 13. FF13 Episode i. It already has a fan translation.

@shadowysea07 As I said before, there are two possibilities. They are either using the old content that was cut out from Xbox, or they MADE THE CONTENT WILL FULL INTENTION OF RELEASING A SEQUEL ONLY ONE YEAR LATER. BOTH OF THESE OPTIONS ARE HORRIFYING. We already know they cut out content. We already know it was "a whole game's worth". If content goes missing then a game appears out of nowhere, what is the proper course of logic? And again, yes it's a sequel, but it doesn't take much to define that right? Take a shoddy plot line you pulled out of your ass. Interweave a bunch of flashbacks (you know, the same way they did with FFXIII). Wahla, a new "sequel". You can even change the time, but still use the environment. Take Lightining's transversable house for instance. Can't you go back there in deleted content, yet still have a storyline for a sequel? You bet your ass you can. Funny how that works isn't it? You can keep arguing with me to say that I'm completely illogical to think that the deleted content has nothing to do with XIII-2, but I know a "whole game's worth of content" doesn't just vanish into thin air and all of a sudden a brand new "sequel" gets announced in a few years. It doesn't take a five year old to know something real fishy is going on here.

@dipsetboy17 money's money. Look at Valkyria Chronicles Amazing game, didn't sell well. After it got some run way they ported it to psp cause it's cheaper to make =*****(. Stupid Sega.... Advertise your games when your going to get something amazing and keep it on with the original console!!!! Good advertising sells games .........

why though? ff13 was terrible in everything except graphics.

@night-dreamers not sure about the whole cutting or not w/e. I think your last post about it not fitting onto 3 discs and square being money grabbing douches is more on it. If you ask me they didn't cut it simply wasn't designed for the 360 so they're release it as 2 games cause they can't sell it as a stack of like 6 discs like the kotaku's awesome huge stack of discs hahaha.

night-dreamers
night-dreamers

It's like saying every 3 dvds marks the end of the game if it doesn't fit into that we're lucky we'll make it a 2 games "game" and win 60 dollars times 5.5 millions multiplied by 2. And possibilities were never facts, but they could happen or coulda happened.

night-dreamers
night-dreamers

@shadowysea07 In other words, the part that was cut from the main game they continued upon to make a sequel, just to sell more "FFXIII". They can't just stop the project halfway of developing it.

night-dreamers
night-dreamers

@shadowysea07 Boy, listen he's not saying they just started working on it, nor I'm I just said I believe him because it was said before that a part of the game was cut enough to make a sequel, and they're coming up with this only backs up that rumer. theshonen8899 is only saying that this is possible, take it easy dude.

shadowysea07
shadowysea07

@night-dreamers @theshonen8899 still waiting on you to prove that they just started working on this game since you both say they've been working on it less than a year and started after ff13 was released. you keep on arguing that its impossible for teh sequel to be out so quickly and be a brand new game without deleted content from the original yet you can't back up any of your statements with facts. its a sequel which already proves that since its not a prequel there will be no content in the game that would take place before the start of the last game. not only would that make no sense but it would go against the definition sequel. as for when they started developing this game ff13 was obviously done before they shipped it out. anyone who knows anything about videogames at least knows this. since they were finished with the game before e3 that makes the game being about done at least q2 so that gives them the time frame of almost 2 years for them to have been working on the sequel. now why they would start working on a sequel before the game was out is questionable but since this is ff and they did the same with ffx and ffx-2 it makes sense from a business prespective.

@CloudStrife97 Lets not forget, that Final Fantasy X was very linear. Up until you received the airship at nearly %80 in the game, its pure linearity. And, several characters from X were considered to be annoying (Wakka for one). In the community, there are several Final Fantasies that are considered to be a bit lacking, often the fanbase cites FFV, FFVIII, FFIX, and FFXII. They all are good, but the main problem with XIII is that Square wanted to "sell" Final Fantasy. They were hoping people would fawn over the graphics and overlook the more obvious lack of conviction in the storyline and largely one sided protagonists and antagonists. Lightning, and Sazh are the only really interesting characters. They get all of the memorable scenes, and they can't carry the game on thier own. The narritive is disapointing, the exploration is boring, the majority of the cast is largely unappealing, it just wasn't a good game, and given it had the moniker of Final Fantasy, it was a horrible attempt at a game. I am a lifelong fan of Square and Final Fantasy, but I abbored all of the game save for Lighting and Sahz.

night-dreamers

@shadowysea07 FFX is the first FF to appear on the sixth generation right? it took 2 years right? FFX-2 took the same it took 2 years just like FFX, FFXIII is the first FF to appear on the seventh generation, and it took 5 years, using your "common sence" I'd say the developlment of FFXIII-2 took place 1 year after the development of FFXIII started, and it has the same team if I recall correctly. I'm not saying that I'm just collecting your shattered "common sence" around the place.

night-dreamers
night-dreamers

@shadowysea07 quoted from the above member; "as for this game being announced and released so quickly how do you know when they started developement for it? oh thats right you don't. considering they have been working on this game for at the least 2 years its not impossible. if the game is just as short as the original and since they already had the engines set in place i don't see why you think its soo impossible. it took 2 years to make ffx and 2 to make x-2"

night-dreamers

@shadowysea07 Oh boy you really are too slow, I won't use common sence on you but I'll use your sence, you said the game might be developed 2 years prior to the anouncment right? XIII wasn't released a year ago but less than that, meaning this game according to your flowed logic IS or was or may be a part of XIII. Is this how you talk in real life? if you're wrong you make yourself believe and argue and insult others and make em feel like crap to rule over the conversation? you've got no place in this forum go to whatever I'm-always-right forum you came from :?.
