Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD dated for Vita, no physical release for X-2

Both games to be sold for $39.99.

The Vita versions of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD will be released alongside the PlayStation 3 version on March 18, 2014, Square Enix has announced.

The two games will be sold together for $39.99, with Square Enix confirming that it would not be selling the Vita versions of the game individually as previously stated.

Both Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD will be available for download on the PlayStation Network, and a physical release for Final Fantasy X HD will also be made available, which will come with a download code for X-2. The PlayStation 3 version of the game will feature both games on one Blu-Ray disc.

The two games feature cross-save support between the PS3 and Vita versions, but aren't part of Sony's cross-buy initiative.

Great news. Am getting this for the Vita, FFX on the go!! woohoo!!!

At least the 2 games are somewhat together on the PSvita. It is impossible to have both games on 1 PSvita game card. Which is 8GB max so A DL code will have to do for the second game.

Disappointed these aren't crossbuy.

Will the Vita version be getting the limited edition too?

I'm tempted to say they've been adding turbomesh to all the characters in both games without double checking how much it's morphed parts of them... Some of the faces appear very different in FFX though the models in X-2 were higher poly to begin with and seem to be coping with it much better, it does seem a little off.

And on another note those guns look horribly plastic, they could have fixed that in under a minute.

I moved into a new house last weekend and while unpacking I somehow found myself hooking up my PS2 and inserting FFX.

Maybe I'll wait until march for another playthrough

I really feel like Square Enix didn't do much to note last gen, at least in America. Last game I got that felt new was DQ 9, wasn't a fan of FF13, so it didn't help that they kept releasing it. Even on their home site for the US the games on the game page don't feel llike Square Enix at all. It'd be nice if they got back to their roots a bit more, been waitin for a new FF since 12, and a new original KH for I don't know how long. I guess this remake is cool but I feel like so many companies want me to r-buy so many games I already have its getting ridiculous. Fuck these nostalgic cash grabs. Off topic but I bought MGS3 when it came out, again when the ps2 trilogy came out, again for 3DS, and just to have SOMETHING to play on Vita, again there. Its looking like to really enjoy my old friends at Square I need to hit Rosetta Stone and learn Japanese lol...

They should make steam versions of FF games. 1-13. Well except for 11. Release the whole collection for 50$.

Actually their entire library should be accessible. Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, etc. Then they could do deals like Sega does with their games.

Unless they redid the textures, i dont see the point I have both and play them threw pcxs2  emulation ( oh no i said the E word, Nothing wrong  with that if you own the ps2 and the game) and they look great 4x its native res which is better there then 1080p

This will be the reason I buy a Vita!  I just hope that with FFX you can skip the cutscenes since you couldn't in the original version.  That was my only complaint with FFX.  Now in FFX-2 you skip them no problem.  I've played and beaten FFX at least 15 or more times.  I recall many nights I was up until 4:30 am leveling up my characters because on my first playthrough I was very underprepared.  For example when I fought Seymour the first time I just barely beat him.  Second playthrough Yuna knew Holy and I mopped the floor with him.

No matter what people say, I actually liked FFX-2. The story is not that good but the combat mechanics are really solid and the dressspheres are quite fun too use.

Pretty sweet deal. But I like FFX a lot more than FFX-2.

I'm cool with digital distribution. Being a PC gamer these days (with handhelds having my attention), I prefer a format that can be backward compatible. Digital distribution eliminates all the excuses for not featuring bc.

PC gamers have been reaping the benefits of digital distribution for about a decade now. Console and handheld gamers should have the same options. With digital, console makers can't cop-out about discs or cards 'not being physically readable' nor 'unable to be physically inserted'. The excuses for a lot of bullshit end with digital.

Why can't X-2 be on a Vita card? I'd rather buy them both separately and own them in an actual tangible form. But I guess I'm just more picky than most when comes to that stuff.

Another reason to own a Vita, Sony is finally grabbing the bull by the horns and stepping up their game this is going to be Fkin amazing on the vita

And where is ffvii? That's what gamers want. I'd buy a vita for it

Buying a PS3 or Vita in March. No, FFX-2 was not the best game, or even idea ever, but I loved what they tried to do.

BTW, have the stated what version of FFX we're getting? If it's the International, I'll get the PS3.

@anonymousickoThey are releasing a limited edition vita bundle but i dont think they will for the game alone.

@tsunami2311I've done the same thing as well. However, I realize I am spending less time at home so I want to play these on the go.

Necrotron

@tsunami2311 I own the original version and have played it at 1080p on my PC with that.  It looks amazing.  They are redoing some textures, and are re-cutting several of the cutscenes to work with a 16:9 resolution, so the PS3 HD re-release will have some advantages over just emulating the old PS2 version on PC.  But still, it looks great in pcxs2, definitely.

@adunoakenshield I also thought it had good music.  FFX-2 would have worked better if it was an expansion instead of a game I think.

ExtremePhobia

@adunoakenshield Agreed. The story was kind of a wash but I still played through a few times just for the other aspects of the game.

@BradBurns I think despite how cool physical copies are we will eventually see the transition to all digital in the next 2-5 years. Physical copies are really a waste of resources.

nate1222
nate1222

@BradBurns Look at it this way: With digital distribution, they can't cop-out on bc when Sony's next handheld is released.

breathnac

@da_chub there will never be a remake of FF VII the graphics are way to dated to be given HD treatment and would therefore have to reconstruct the entire game and possibly upset a huge fan base that loved the original. Too risky.

@FallenOneX I 100%'ed X-2, through gritted teeth.  I did like the combat but the story....

The international version is that the one with Penance?  Because I am not going through that ordeal again.

@FallenOneXit has the international content you can google "FFX hd international" but here is a somewhat reliable link

@Necrotron Well, you can actually play the original PS2 in widescreen on PCSX2. You just need to enable a patch that forces the game engine to render in 16:9. I tried it with both FFX/FFX-2 and it works really well. I honestly don't see a reason to re-buy it on another console just for the sake of doing it when I can play it in HD/widescreen just fine on an emulator. Unless SE decides to port it to PC, I'm fine with my PS2 copies :)

Necrotron
Necrotron

@nate1222 @adunoakenshield And that music sometimes gets a little too j-pop, but still, it also has some amazing melodies too, such as that intro screen music, which I used to sometimes just leave running on my TV because I loved it so much.

BradBurns
BradBurns

@pyro1245 @BradBurns Kind of but not really. The benefits are obvious, you own the game and it can't be erased or made unavailable while digital has that immediacy to it.

If the PSP Go's failure and Xbox One policy reversal are anything to go by 2-5 years is definitely too soon.

I also don't think that the manufacture and distribution of physical game copies is as costly as these money-hungry publishers would have you believe.

auron11022
auron11022

@breathnac @da_chub

Not only that, but the humor and charm of the game would be lost with voice acting and uber-realistic graphics.

Plus the game systems are so dated that I don't even think it would be that fun of a game any more.

nate1222
nate1222

@larongemini@da_chub Agreed. Back when I had a PSP, the PSN version of FFVII got mad play time out of me. As did Street Fighter Alpha 2, Castlevania SotN, and Resident Evil 2.

Today? I'm a PC gamer...with FFVII on my Steam account and SFA2 on my GOG account (DRM-free)! Woohoo!

Necrotron
Necrotron

@DeadorRock @Necrotron For the most part, what this will do is make available to the general populous the ability to play this game in HD, since setting up a PS2 emulator is a bit of a task.

Shadow of the Colossus was another HD edition they brought to PS3 with enhanced lighting, shadows, and physics, and looked really good on a PS3.  Rumors are they are enhancing things similarly for Final Fantasy X HD.  Of course, the extra graphical fluff may be negligible, but if SotC is any indication, it can make the ease of use + minor additions a good argument for picking up the remake, certainly for the average Joe.  Additionally, there will be cross save for anyone who has a vita.

Your points are all sound, it might not be a great improvement over emulation, but it will make it readily available for a wide market.

JimmeyBurrows
JimmeyBurrows

@BradBurns Either way you don't own the game... Both come with a license but only digital copys currently have a way of being backed up, if you try to burn the iso to another disc your machine wont much like it.

Also while it's on your hdd it can't be erased by anyone but yourself.

JimmeyBurrows
JimmeyBurrows

@auron11022 Not to mention what they'd do to Cid, he got ruined in Dirge of Cerberus, can't exactly bleep him out or risk upsetting the censors.

It's a safe bet a remake would be worse than the original.

@nate1222

I am a recent PC convert.

Best decision I've made in a while.  Between my computer, PS2, Wii, PS3, DS Lite and PSP 1000 I have more available games than I will ever be able to actually play in the next 10 years.

I mean, the only D&D RPG I've played is Baldur's Gate 2!  There are enough of just those to keep me entertained for over a year.
