In a surprise move, Square Enix today released Final Fantasy IX for iOS and Android devices. We knew the 2000 RPG was coming to smartphones, but until today, we didn't know when it would be released or if it was coming to North America at all. You can download it today from iTunes and Google Play for $17.

That's a 20 percent markdown from its normal price. The promotion ends February 21.

In the game's description, Square Enix warns that the file size is "very large" and the download will take quite a while (depending on your connection). It weighs in at around 4 GB, but Square Enix says it requires more than 8 GB to download.

For the iOS version, you need iOS 7.0 or newer, and the game is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. For the Android release, you need Android 4.1 and a compatible smartphone or tablet.

Final Fantasy IX debuted in 2000 for the original PlayStation. The game was re-released for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PSP through the PlayStation Network in 2010.

It's also coming to PC, but a release date more specific than the "early 2016" window displayed on its Steam page has not been announced.
